Aims of the Mentoring Scheme Having a mentor at university can make a huge difference to the speed with which new students manage to settle into a new university life. Just knowing that somebody is there to listen and is genuinely interested in helping can make students feel supported. The Mentoring Scheme is open to all new starters Glasgow University from All faculties including the GIC. Benefits of the Mentoring Scheme The acquisition of new skills and increased knowledge that can be applied to your own life and in your personal experience. The opportunity to share your learning and experience with a new student. The development of new perspectives and ideas. How will I be paired up in a Mentoring relationship? GUMSA will administer the Mentoring Scheme and will: Select pairings. Review the buddying agreement at the start of the relationship. Provide support, when assistance is requested and where appropriate. Review the buddying evaluations at the end of the relationship. The Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinator (Omar for brothers and Aya for sisters) will try to find a suitable match for theindividuals based on the information provided on the initial application form, via GUMSA website. Although it cannot be guaranteed that all requirements will be matched entirely, a best fit approach will be taken wherever possible. In the unlikely event that you experience problems with the relationship that cannot be resolved between yourselves, please contact the Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinator. How will the Mentoring scheme work? Mentoring a fresher means you will: Help them with practical issues that they may be embarrassed to keep asking about relating to their faith or course. During the first week of joining show them the environment and facilities both inside and outside University i.e. local banks, sandwich shops, post office. Reassure them that they are not expected to know everything, that asking questions of others will be quite expected. Ideally a Mentor should be of a similar faculty and background and have the ability to be an informal friend. This is especially important for international students. The Mentor should make contact, by telephone or by meeting informally, soon after they have been emailed. The appointed Mentor and Mentee should

understand the importance of this role and that it will last the entire academic year at least. We hope you make friends though for life. How much time will I need to give? For the relationship to be a success both students need to demonstrate enthusiasm and a real commitment to benefit from the relationship. Time commitment may vary quite considerably between each individual pairing. Alternatively a new student may just need to call their mentor with a quick query to clarify an issue, which would clearly take less than an hour. These arrangements should be discussed and decided between yourselves. What support should I expect? The Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinators will be available to provide you with support at any stage of the buddying process, although it is important you contact the Co-ordinators directly, should you require any further assistance. You will be given the contact details of the Coordinators when you sign up to the Mentoring Scheme. You can also e-mail gumsa@hotmail.co.uk at any time. Mentoring Scheme Roles and Responsibilities The Mentee will: Identify the skills and areas that theyd like more information about. Expect to receive guidance and advice from their mentor but should not expect them to do all their coursework! Accept responsibility for their own decisions and actions. Acquire new skills and increased knowledge about various things. Maintain confidentiality. The Mentor will: Provide advice, information, guidance and constructive feedback, where appropriate. Act as the facilitator to develop the mentees understanding and awareness of Glasgow University Maintain confidentiality. Personal Attributes People in a successful mentoring relationship should display the following essential attributes: The ability to listen. Demonstrate openness and a commitment to the partnership. Good time management and self management skills. Assertiveness, realism and discretion. The capacity to accept alternative points of view and ideas
