Appendix to the

Regulations for the D-INFK Master Programme in Computer Science

(2006)

approved by the Rector on 26 April 2006

___________________________________________________________________

1. University degrees or evidence of academic achievements from

universities, which allow admission to the Master programme in
Computer Science without having to fulfil any further study
requirements
(Ref: Art. 20, Section 1, Letter a and Art. 22 of the programme regulations)

1.1 Candidates, whose applications meet the following prerequisites, are allowed
admission to the Master programme in Computer Science without having to fulfil
any further study requirements:
a. Candidates who hold a Bachelor degree that corresponds to 180 credits
ECTS, or an equivalent university degree or evidence of academic
achievements in Computer Science, and
b. The degree in question, or evidence of academic achievements, has been
acquired at one of the following universities:
− ETH Zurich
− ETH Lausanne
− Imperial College London
− Delft Technical University
− RWTH Aachen University.
Recognition of other university degrees is being clarified.

1.2 Holders of university degrees, or evidence of academic achievements, not

listed under Item 1.1 must follow the “sur dossier” admission procedure in
accordance with Art. 21, Section 4 of the programme regulations.

2. Requirements for admission to the Master programme in Computer

Science (requisite profile)
(Ref: Art. 20, Section 1, Letter b of the programme regulations)

2.1 To gain admission to the Master programme in Computer Science, candidates

should provide evidence of their scientific knowledge and practical experience
in this field. This evidence constitutes a minimal requisite profile that must be
fulfilled to gain admission to the programme, and is a guideline for candidates
whose previous education does not correspond to Items 1.1 and 3 of this
appendix.
2.2 The requisite profile is based on the knowledge and practical experience
acquired during the ETH Bachelor programme in Computer Science. This
corresponds to a total of 114 credits which amounts to 63% of the study
requirements necessary to acquire the Bachelor degree. Furthermore, a
technical and scientific way of thinking is important. The requisite profile is
divided into the following three parts:

Part I corresponds to 74 credits and forms an essential basis for the Master
programme. The courses listed below are taken from the ETH Bachelor
programme in Computer Science. Information on the content of each course is
listed in the corresponding course catalogue. 1

The minimum number of credits required in Mathematics amounts to

29 credits:

- Analysis I and II
– Probability and Statistics
– Linear Algebra
– Discrete Mathematics

The minimum number of credits required in Computer Science and Electrical

Engineering amounts to 45 credits:

– Electronics
– Computer Architecture
– Network Systems
– Information Theory
– Theory of Computing
– Formal Methods and Functional Programming
– Software Engineering
– Symbolic and Numerical Calculation
– Computational Science

Part 2 corresponds to 20 credits and consists of courses relevant to Computer

Science. However, these courses only partially correspond to the course
content of the ETH Bachelor programme in Computer Science. Core subjects
and electives from the ETH Bachelor programme in Computer Science are
relevant.

Part 3 corresponds to 20 credits. The course content should primarily be

related to the foreseen major in the Master programme. This part of the requisite
profile is examined by the tutor in question in consultation with the Admissions
Committee.

3. Bachelor degrees or degrees in Computer Science taken at a Swiss
University of Applied Sciences generally allow admission to the
Master programme in Computer Science upon fulfilling additional
study requirements of a maximum of 60 credits ECTS.
(Ref: Art. 20, Section 1, Letter c of the programme regulations)

Holders of a Bachelor degree, or a degree from a Swiss University of Applied

Sciences, in Computer Science are generally admitted to the ETH Master
programme in Computer Science upon fulfilling additional study requirements of
a maximum of 60 credits. The additional study requirements are part of the
ETH Bachelor programme in Computer Science and are divided into the
following two parts:

Part 1 corresponds to 43 credits and must be acquired by all candidates. This

involves taking the courses listed below which are part of the ETH Bachelor
programme in Computer Science. Information on the content of each course is
listed in the corresponding course catalogue. 2

courses credits
– Analysis II 3
– Linear Algebra 7
– Logic 4
– Discrete Mathematics 7
– Probability and Statistics 5
– Symbolic and Numerical 4
Calculation
– Theory of Computing 7
– Formal Methods and Functional 6
Programming

Part 2 corresponds to 17 credits. These study requirements should be relevant

to the foreseen major and are determined by the tutor in question in consultation
with the Admissions Committee.

Partial waiver of additional requirements: In the case of applications from

outstanding candidates, the Admissions Committee can waive additional
requirements up to a maximum of 20 credits.

4. Permitted number of credits still to be obtained and their allocation

to the course categories of the Bachelor programmes in Computer
Science

2
(Ref: Art. 21, Section 2 of the programme regulations)

4.1 Students pursuing the ETH Bachelor programme in Computer Science can
register for the Master programme in Computer Science once they only have to
acquire a maximum of 40 credits for the Bachelor degree. It is indicated in the
table below in which course categories of the Bachelor programme 3 credits may
still be obtained and the maximum permitted number of credits still to be
obtained. The number of credits required for all other course categories of the
Bachelor programme in order to obtain the Bachelor degree must have been
acquired.

category credits
– Core subjects 12
– Major (courses) 20
– Major (self-study) 5
– Electives in Humanities, Social and 3
Political Science
