Lab 10.3 and 10.4 1) List the 802.x standards for specifying wireless networks: 802.11a data at 54 Mbps operates at 5 GHz, 802.11b data at 11Mbps and operates at 2.4 GHz, 802.11g data at 54 Mbps and operates at 2.4 GHz, and the new 802.11n with data 600 Mbps with the use of 4 spatial streams (each spatial stream provides data rate up to 150 Mbps) at a channel width of 40 MHz. (Release October last year ) 2) What industry name is associated with 802.11g? AirPort Extreme from Apple 3) What is the simplest form of wireless network? What devices are needed to create this type of network, and what mode does this type of network use? PAN, cell phone, notebook, PDA with Bluetooth or infrared, Ad Hoc mode 4) What device connects wireless users to a wired network? Wireless access point (WAP) router 5) What standard speed are supported by 802.11x: (a, g) 54 Mbps, (b) 11 Mbps, 600 Mbps (book says 160 Mbps for n) 6) What kind of encryption is used with 802.11n? AES encryption 7) Give four examples of devices (besides PCs) that will probably eventually run on wireless LANs: two way radios, cellular phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants, GPS, cordless telephones 8) What does the acronym Wi-Fi stand for? Nothing, but for the sake of the grade Wireless Fidelity 9) What is the approximate maximum range for 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n technologies? 802.11b anf 802.11g frequency range 2.4 GHz, distance range 100 meters, 802.11n frequency range can perform as high as 70 Mbps at 300 feet 10) What inherent feature of 802.11b, seen as a major problem by business, might affect your decision to use Wi-fi at home? 802.11b devices suffer interference from other products

operating in the 2.4 GHz band. Devices operating in the 2.4 GHz range include: microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors and cordless telephones. 11) In the context of how they physically interface with a computer, what are the three basic types of wireless adapters? pci, usb, network card 12) What mode requires a wireless access point? Infrastructure mode requires an access point. Ad-hoc does not. 13) How many 802.11x devices can be used at one time with a single access point? Depends on the access point. Different routers manufacturers claim different numbers for maximum connections. 14) What radio band and speed does 802.11a use? 5 GHz, 54 Mbps 15) Which standard offers a faster transfer rate: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11n? n=600 Mbps, g and a = 54 Mbps, b = 11 Mbps 16) List the components required to connect four PCs in ad hoc mode and include their prices. List the device and extra expense needed to connect the same four PCs to a cable modem: wireless adapters configured for ad hoc mode, they must use the same SSID and the same channel number. To cable, cable mode ($ 70), router($40), more cables Ethernet Home LAN 1) What is the maximum cable length for a 100BaseT Ethernet LAN? 100 meters (328 feet) 2) Must you use a hub to connect three PCs? Two PCs? Explain. No, they are hardly used this days because they have been substituted by switches. You can only connect 2 computers together, using a crossover cable. If you want to connect more than 2 computers together, then you will need a wireless router, switch, or hub. 3) What type of cabling is typically used for 100BaseT? Twisted pair (UTP or STP) with RJ 45 connector 4) Are special tools required when working with cat 5e cabling to create patch or share a connection to the internet? Crimping tool and RJ-45 connectors, more than you will need in case you have to redo it, and the cable 5) What feature of Windows Vista or Windows XP allows more than one computer to share a connection to the internet? Network and Sharing Center, Sharing and Discovery 6) What type of cable connector is used for fast Ethernet? Twisted pair cabling (stp or utp) CAT5 or higher 7) What standard supports a speed of 100 Mbps using two sets of Cat 3 cable? 100 Base T2 uses two sets of CAT 3 to achieve speeds of 100Mbps 8) What is the name for a cable that connects a computer to a hub? Patch Cable 9) Suppose you have a LAN consisting of a 100BaseT hub, two computers with 10BaseT NICs, and a computer with a 10/100BaseT NIC. At what speed would this LAN operate? Why? It will operate on the speed corresponding to the slowest element in the network. 10 Base will operate at 10 base and the computer with 100 base will operate 100 base

10) Given a budget of $200 to connect five computers would you chose a wired system or wireless? Explain your choice: Wired because of security, but actually wireless would be cheaper 11) What is the name for a cable that connects a hub to a hub? Crossover cable 12) In theory, if a file transferred in 4.5 seconds on a fast Ethernet LAN, how long would the same file transfer take on a 10BaseT LAN? 45 seconds 13) Give three examples of ways to physically interface a NIC to a computer? USB, PCMCIA, PCI slot 14) What device can use to connect two or more PCs to a single cable modem? hub/switch, router, direct cable connection, crossover network cable, usb connection 15) List the components, including cables, required to connect four PCs. Include the price of each component. List the changes and additional devices required to connect all four PCs to a cable modem and provide a hardware firewall: 1 switch, or hub, or router, 4 PCs, 4 cables. To connect to a cable modem, connect the router, switch, hub to the cable mode, the cable modem to the hardware firewall, the PCs to the router.

Review Questions 1) Base on your research, does wireless or 100BaseT offer the best performance for the money? 100BaseT. Wireless G (the standard) runs at 54 mb/sec while 100BaseT is 100 mb/sec 2) Is wireless or 100BaseT easier to configure at home? Why? 100BT is easier. Install a NIC, plug it in, set an IP, and start working. With wireless, you need to be concerned about security (SSIDs, Encryption, etc.).

3) What factors dictate the transmission range of 802.11.x? Some factors that do dictate the transmission range are the placement of the wireless device giving a signal and also the distance of the wireless device to your device. 4) What determines the speed of a LAN that consists of both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps devices? If all devices are 10 and 100 Mbps than the LAN would work at 100 Mbps. But if a device is working only at 10 Mbps, then the LAN would work at the slowest speed of 10 Mbps for that certain device. 5) Could you combine a wireless and wired LAN in the same home? Why would you? Yes, so you can connect desktop and all the other devices, and walk around when in your laptop

Lab 10.4 1) What are the seven OSI layers: OSI Layer TCP/IP Protocol stack Layer 7 Application Application Layer (E-mail using SMTP and IMAP protocols 6 Presentation 5 Session 4 Transport Transport Layer (TCP protocol) 3 Network Internet Layer (IP protocol) Data Link Network Interface Layer (network card using Ethernet Protocol 1 Physical 2) E-mails is one example of TCP/IP application that works in the Application layer. What are two more examples of applications that work in this layer: FTP, HTTP, Telnet, 3) Function of TCP protocol: Control many different aspects of communication; ensure two devices use the same protocols so the communication makes sense. 4) What is the name of each address on the Internet that identifies a unique network and host? IP address 5) One more example than NIC: Bluetooth, Ethernet, POTS, USB 6) Other than IP, another example: IGMP, AppleTalk, IPX 7) TCP/IP MAC Level 1 Physical level 8) At what TCP/IP layer does the TLS protocol works? Presentation Layer 9) At what TCP/IP layer does the HTTPS protocol works? Application layer 10) Why do you think TCP/IP is often called a protocol stack rather than protocol suite? Because the suite is the definition of the protocols, and the stack is the software implementation of them. Review Questions 1) List the four layers of the protocol stack used when an e-mail client requests e-mail over the internet Link layer, internet, transport, application

2) What protocol does a Web Browser normally use? HTTP 3) At what TCP/IP layer does a web browser work? Application level 4) When more than one application is running on a server, how does IP know which service should be presented a data packet? They have different port for different protocols that will respond to the request. 5) When configuring a network connection to the internet, you might need to enter the IP address of the computer, the DNS server, the subnet mask, and the default gateway. Of these four items, which is used to determine whether a remote computer is on the same network or a remote network? Subnet mask 6) Of the four items in Question 5, which is used to relate a domain name to an IP address? DNS server
