Congressman Steny Hoyer: Your hard work means that more people will have the chance to succeed.

Melwood was selected as the site for NISH to present its prestigious JWOD Champion award in October to the U.S. House Majority Leader, Congressman Steny Hoyer. Employees gathered to applaud Melwoods longtime friend in the lobby of the administration building. Congressman Hoyer was introduced to two Melwood-trained workers who have succeeded at their jobs secured by NISH. Raymond Reher has worked as a landscaper at a U.S. Treasury site in Prince George's County for 18 years. He gets up every day at 4 a.m. and takes two bus rides and two train rides to his job. Essie Jackson has been with Melwood eight years and does custodial work at the headquarters of Housing and Urban Development. With help from the HUD staff members she met on the job, she made her fondest dream come true in April by purchasing her own condominium.

Congressman Hoyer told them, Your hard work means that more people will have the chance to succeed on their jobs. The Javits Wagner O'Day (JWOD) Act is the landmark legislation that led to opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities to prove themselves in the federal workplaces. Almost all employers who hire workers with disabilities tell me that those workers are the most dedicated workers they have, and they usually turn out to be the best at their jobs, Mr. Hoyer said. Melwood Navy Yard Worker: Always Willing and Eager to Help

The following was submitted by Stacy Conlin, Director of EEO and Diversity for Naval Reactors at the Washington Navy Yard:

Nadine Murrell has been a member of Naval Reactors custodial team since 2002. In such a serious place, Nadines smile and positive attitude always lighten the air and impress those around her. One of Nadines primary responsibilities is the care of Admiral Kirkland H. Donalds office. The Admirals staff is especially appreciative of Nadines hard work and enthusiasm. She arrives before the staff and has the office ready for business every day. CWO3 Eugene Hutchinson also greatly appreciates Nadines help with facilities and ceremony preparation. Many times she has adjusted her schedule in order to ensure that specific rooms receive attention prior to ceremonies in order to present the organization in the best light. From the most senior members of the Naval Reactors Program to the most junior, Nadine treats all people with kindness and respect. Mr. Troy Mueller, Director of Nuclear Technology for the Program, commented on both Nadines work ethic and attitude. She always works hard, but smiles and keeps me lighthearted each time I see her. I think she has many talents that we have not even come close to tapping. Junior Officer, LTJG Jerome May agreed, stating, Nadine provides spirited and witty interaction that can bring a smile to any face. She is the type of person you always look forward to seeing. All who work with Nadine seem to agree that she is the total team player always willing and eager to help out whoever is in need, and a joy to be around.

Melwood s Nadine Murrell has earned the admiration of many in the nuclear engineering offices at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, DC, including (above) Stephen Trautman, Deputy Director for Naval Reactors. Melwoods Navy Yard custodial contract offers employment for 133 people.

Inaugural Melwood Prince Georges County Open: Unlike Any Other on the PGA Nationwide Tour
150 attended an exclusive sponsors event at Woodmore in November, and heard from County Executive Jack Johnson and Melwood Mom Betty Moore (left). Melwoods PGA Nationwide Tour golf tournament took giant strides by the New Year, with the announcement of an astounding Pro-Am pairings party. Six Flags America is showing superb support for this event as well as for their home county and for Melwood, by providing a private party for our Pro-Am participants on May 22, said Tournament Director Teo Sodeman. The park management will provide street entertainment, food, rides and music. This Pro-Am Pairings Party is sure to be an event unlike any other on the tour. The Open also announced that several additional experienced managers have joined its team of volunteers. Patricia Terrell has accepted the Volunteer Chair position. Patricia is the President/CEO of T&T Management, Inc., an event management company. Ted Wroth, Board Chair of the First Tee in Montgomery County, and recently involved with the Kemper/Booz Allen PGA TOUR event, will chair operations, with help from Corning Construction Owner Michael Menocal, who also worked with the Kemper. The Pro-Am Tournament chair is Sean Keehn of The Severn Group, who is also Golf Chair at The Country Club at Woodmore. The Junior Clinic co-chairs are Barbara Wesley, Senior Vice President of Operations with the YMCA of Greater Washington, and Rhonda Dallas, President of sports marketing firm LaDae, Inc. We are still looking for volunteers for some key positions, said Mr. Sodeman, but with the caliber of the people who are already on board, we are extremely excited about the event we will put on for the people of Prince Georges County, and about the benefits for the mission of Melwood.

Seven-Year Supportive Living Assistant Enjoys Working Second Job at Melwood Home
Melwood s Edith Joseph puts in 32 hours every weekend, and calls her work rewarding. She currently stays overnight at this apartment home of a person with developmental disabilities in Prince Georges County. In addition to her weekend work with Melwood, Ms. Joseph holds a full-time position working for the U.S. Government.

Edith Joseph has two jobs. Five days a week she works for the Federal Government. Every Friday afternoon for the past seven years, Edith has gone on to her second job at a Melwood home. I took this job for extra income, and started on every other weekend. Then, a staff member moved on. Edith, a mother of two, grandmother of five, started working every weekend with Melwood. She enjoys her two-job lifestyle. Melwood offers vacation, sick leave, and deferred income for retirement, she said. Also, my full-time job is a stressful job. Here, I have my duties, but there is the occasional opportunity to wind down. The hours: from Friday evening until Sunday evening, staying with the resident (or residents) the entire time, and counted as 32 hours of pay. However, Ms. Joseph says she and other Supportive Living Assistants enjoy their work for other reasons. We have so much fun and we are really rewarded. For most of her time at Melwood, she has supported an individual apartment resident, and has seen an

amazing transformation. People are shocked! she said. When I first arrived here he didnt like to do anything, because he felt people all looked at him. He stayed by himself and watched TV, 24-7. Edith says she and other assistants make sure their residents get to do things everyone else loves to do. It started with a birthday party. He had a good time. Now we go bicycling, shopping and fishing. He loves plants. If he had his way hed be in the Melwood greenhouses all of the time. My advice about this job is to give it a working chance, because it is rewarding.

Garden Center Sets Holiday Sales Records

December brought record revenues at the Melwood Garden Center, with plenty of customers for plants, holiday gift baskets and printing and assembly contracts. Plant sales at sites including Verizon Headquarters, the Carver Center and Prince Georges Board of Education brought a sellout of all Melwood plants. We were extremely gratified with the cooperation at these sites, and the interest in these fine products, said Garden Center Manager Maggie Wiles. The center also packed and shipped more than 800 orders for holiday baskets, as well as a whopping contract for 2000 fruit baskets for Whole Foods stores.

At Verizon Headquarters in December, Verizon Client Account Manager Frank McGuinness purchases Melwood poinsettias from (l to r) Melwoods Damien Price, Donna Kramer, Tracy Mullen and James Kerrigan.

Melwood Vehicle Donations Go Nationwide

Melwood received a really long-distance vehicle donation in December. We got our first phone call from California, said Vehicle Donations Director Ron Farrin. It used to be that Richmond, Virginia was the farthest we could take donations from, but thats not the case anymore. Melwood has been able to go nationwide because Ron has developed relationships with auction companies that provide towing and sales across the country. All proceeds go to Melwood. Donors nationwide see Melwoods phone number and web link whenever they enter search terms like vehicle donation. According to Ron, Recent stats show that between 50,000 and 100,000 people conduct a search on Yahoo to donate their vehicle every day. In its first two months, this national program has begun to tap into a vast potential market, resulting in 70 donations from 15 states in its first six weeks of operation. Ron also sent out approximately 15,000 referral forms to auto repair shops all over the U.S. in the heavy hitting areas. Mechanics are encouraged to direct potential donors to the website or donation line. Were hoping our supporters will put out the word that people can donate to Melwood across our entire nation, said Ron. If they have friends or relatives anywhere in the country with a car to donate, tell them to call Melwood at 1-877-MELWOOD or go online to www.melwood.org.

Mimi Colevas donated this 1986 Porsche 944 with only 83,000 miles in January. Mimi is the wife of Board Member Andy Colevas.

Melwood Enterprise Programs in New Division

Melwoods five enterprise businesses are now unified under one new division. In November, Kathy Sibert joined Melwood as the new Vice President of the Enterprise Services Division that consists of Vehicle Donations, Melwood Garden Center, Melwood Thrift Store, Melwood Retreat Center, and Melwood Landscape Design. Ms. Sibert comes to Melwood with 15 years of experience in marketing, business development, and management with IBM, University of Stanford, Bank of Guam, and TANDBERG. Her qualifications are especially suited to working at Melwood: an MBA in International Management and a Masters in Special Education. Kathys first professional field was teaching students with developmental disabilities. Its easy to see the energy she brings to her new position, and the enthusiasm she so readily displays in dedicating her efforts to support Melwoods mission. I am very excited about joining Melwood, Kathy says, I have been impressed by the dedication and commitment of the staff and Im extremely optimistic about the future for Melwoods Enterprise Division.

Donor Decides Never-Worn Mink Coat Would Look Better In Melwoods Fund
A donor who wishes only to be known as a supporter from Culpeper, Virginia had a problem: she bought a mink coat, and over a period of two years, decided it didnt quite match her tastes after all. She left it in storage at the store, never once wearing it. The coat appraised at $19,000 certainly could have been returned for a large sum. Instead, she donated it to Melwood. This is a very unusual and very welcome gift, said Melwood External Relations Vice President Don Pollock. More and more, we are seeing people remembering Melwood when they have any type of valuable property, whether its cars, jewelry, real estate, or a mink coat. These are often taxdeductible gifts, and we are extremely grateful for each one. Anyone who is interested in making a gift to Melwood can call Fund Development Manager Stephanie Gagne, or go to www. melwood.org.
