HP StorageWorks MSL4048/8096 Tape Libraries Rack rail replacement

WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment: Extend leveling jacks to the oor. Ensure that the full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks. In multiple-rack installations, secure the racks together. Extend only one rack component at a time. Racks may become unstable if more than one component is extended.

WARNING! The HP StorageWorks MSL4048 Tape Library weighs between 30.2 kg (66 lb) and 35.2 kg (lb) without media, and up to 46 kg (101.4 lb) with media (48 cartridges). The HP StorageWorks MSL8096 Tape Library weighs between 44.6 kg (98.3 lb) and 46.6 kg (102.7 lb) without media, and up to 68.8 kg (151.7 lb) with media (96 cartridges). When moving the Library, to reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the Library: Observe local health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual material handling. Remove all tapes to reduce the overall weight. Obtain adequate assistance to lift and stabilize the Library during installation or removal.

The rack kit is an optional customer self repair part. HP customer self repair (CSR) programs allow you to repair your StorageWorks product. Removing the magazines


Power down the Library and unplug the cables.

(1) Insert a small metal pin or straightened paper clip into a magazine release hole while (2) another person grasps the magazines from that side of the Library and pulls them straight out. Repeat to remove the magazines from the other side.

(1) With a #2 Phillips screwdriver, loosen the captive screws on the front bezel. The MSL4048 has two screws on each side; the MSL8096 has three screws on each side. (2) With assistance, slide the Library out of the rack.
CAUTION: When lifting the Library, hold it under its side edges. Lifting it in other locations can damage the chassis and cause Library errors.

On the front of the rack, install the clip nuts in the locations shown, if necessary.

Removing the old rails


With a #3 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws holding the rails to the rack.

Determining your rack type


The rack kit includes two bags of screws and clip nuts. The HP System/E rack has 7.1 mm round holes in the rack column. Choose the bag labeled HP Rack System/E. The HP 5000 and 10000 racks have 9.5 mm square holes in the rack column. Choose the bag labeled HP Rack 5000, 10000.

Slide the Library onto the rails. Secure the Library to the rack by tightening the captive screws in the bezel on each side of the Library. Slide the magazines into the Library. Re-attach the cables and power up the Library.

Using the screws for your rack type and a #3 Phillips screwdriver, secure one rail to each side of the rack. The front of each rail is straight and the back is angled as shown.
