(Continued from page 1) Johnson draws media attention because of his extremely liberal stance on social issues. He is the one of the only GOP candidates that advocates for the legalization of marijuana and is against the war on drugs. Johnson also voted against the war in Iraq and is prochoice. Like Huntsman however, Johnson is a fiscal conservative in regards to the economy. So he believes in deep spending cuts and no raises in taxes. Paul, The Libertarian: Ron Paul is perhaps the most controversial of the GOP candidates. He believes in ending all foreign aid to the Middle East and ending U.S involvement in their affairs. He takes a very anti world police stance on foreign affairs, and according to him, this in turn will funnel some money into the economy. In order to fix the economy, Paul has to idea to end the Federal Reserve, calling it dishonest, immoral, and unconstitutional. He is the only other candidate that is for the legalization of marijuana and in general, advocates for less government involvement in internal affairs. Rick Perry, The Newcomer: Perry is probably the most fiscally conservative candidate in the race and, like all of the other candidates, strongly refuses to even consider the possibility of raising taxes. Perry also has a strong stance on social security, calling it a Ponzi Scheme and was even very close to putting into question

the constitutionality of it. As governor of Texas, Perry is very closely related to the issue of immigration and plans to strengthen our borders as much as possible, using the federal government. However, as governor, Perry supported the DREAM act, which would have given money to children of illegal immigrants for college tuition. Mitt Romney, The Early Frontrunner: Romney was probably the most favored candidate early on, however between Perry and Romney, the race is really wide open as of now. Perhaps one of the most controversial points with Romney is the issue of healthcare. Before Obamacare was passed, Romney endorsed Romneycare, a system that is very similar to Obamacare, the socialist program that most conservatives want to repeal. Romney still defends Romneycare, but also criticizes Obamacare, agreeing with conservatives who say that Obamacare gives the federal government too much power. Romney also has a conservative stance on the economy and social issues. Rick Santorum, The Fighter: One of the reasons CNN dubbed Santorum as the fighter is because of his strong, conservative stance on foreign policy. Like his nickname suggests, Santorum firmly believes in the war oversees and calls it a war against radical Islam. Santorum also has publically announced at the Fox/Google Sept. 22 debate that as president he would reinstate the Dont Ask Dont Tell policy.

The United States Postal Service is dealing with a truck-load of problems. Money is down and union power is up. To fix funding, its being forced to brainstorm. Where does it go from here? Are mailboxes soon to be empty? Some buzzing proposals for solving the funding problems with the postal service include a temporary (albeit complete) shutdown, the end of mail delivery on Saturdays, and a reduction of the number of local branches. But who makes the decision? Congress is crucial to the procedures of this federally run service; theyve got the final say. Senior Maggie Dickinson believes that five days of mail a week sounds reasonable to fix the problems. Most companies that ship things only count business days as working days, so I think no-Saturday-deliveries wouldnt really affect the system negatively. I think its a good idea if its going to save the mail system, said Dickinson It seems the USPS hasnt had a ton of customers coming back for more as of late. According to Forbes.com, the USPS isnt as high-ranked, in terms of customer loyalty, as some other shipping and mailing methods, including the big brown UPS and the everpopular Fed-Ex. The USPS has been at the bottom of the list for as long as weve been conducting

said Forbes.com. Students, faculty members, and, essentially, anyone with a mailbox or post-office box, is going to be affected if changes are initiated. A lot of people rely on it, like elderly people for their medical bills. If they shut it down entirely, thats a fiasco, said secretary Maria Perry. Gayle Ostrom of the career center agrees. I dont think they should totally shut down the USPS. Its still very valuable, said Ostrom. Dickinson said that she doesnt use USPS all of the time, but that getting rid of its current services could potentially get in her way. I dont try to ship things very often, but it would be much harder when I did end up trying. Also, the post office is where most passport photos get taken, so if mine expires, Im not sure Ill have the time to go to a far away branch to get new pictures taken, said Dickinson. Others, however, feel that the times are moving on. What with e-mail, Facebook, and online banking, it seems that the need for snail-mail could be diminishing. There remains, though, a certain feeling that comes with receiving a mailbox delivery. For some, opening the black mailbox at the end of the driveway to find their name on an envelope still holds a feeling of warmth and makes them feel special. They know they were definitely thought about for

e-mail. I love to get a card or a thank-you note in the mail. Its more personal, said Ostrom. Even Ostrom, though, couldnt deny that the switch to computer inbox rather than driveway mailbox is certainly evident. Seven years ago, I got boxes and boxes of mail in the summers. Now, I hardly get any catalogues, said Ostrom. Creative writing and AP Literature teacher Troy Ketch believes everyone will be alright with shutting down a post office or two, as long as its not the office most convenient for their mail. Theyll say, yes, go shut some down. Just not my local one! said Ketch. Certain school projects, too, involve contacting individuals outside of the area and conducting interviews with them. All anatomy students are required to complete interviews with individuals in anatomical fields. A signature sheet is a part of the project, so students will have to mail the paper far off to get the John Hancock of the doctor, dentist, or trainer they contacted in, say, Oklahoma. In some instances, students can still utilize the USPS. It seems that the student body and faculty at SCSS are not ready to part with the postal service. While they agree that some changes might help everyone out, they still enjoy seeing the mailman pull up to drop a letter or two at the end of their driveway.
