RUNNING HEAD: Coke Data Analysis

The Analysis of the Weight of Coke vs. Diet Coke Marissa McMahan Statistics 1510 Taft College

Coke Data Analysis Abstract Many people believe that Diet Coke is lighter than Coke based off the assumption that because it is diet it should definitely be lighter. Most people dont put anymore thought into it than that. In this paper you will read the process I went through in taking a simple random sample of Diet and Regular Coke in order to weigh them and find out which really is heavier. Introduction This paper is about the analysis of whether a 12 oz. can of Coke weighs more or less than a 12 oz. can of Diet Coke. Most people would assume that Diet Coke would weigh less than Coke because it is diet; this is an unfounded assumption though. In order for this assumption to have any credibility it needs to be proven. Methods In order to conduct this experiment I took a sample size of fifteen out of a twenty-four pack of Coke and repeated this procedure with the Diet Coke. After obtaining my sample of fifteen Cokes and fifteen Diet Cokes, each labeled with a unique number, I continued to weigh each can individually. After weighing each can I documented the weight with the designated can number. Following the weighing and documentation of each can with the subsequent can number I proceeded to construct a frequency distribution table and corresponding graph for both Coke and Diet Coke. Materials To conduct this experiment I needed a twenty-four pack of both Coke and Diet Coke, a digital scale in order to weigh each can, and my TI-84 to construct my graphs and frequency distribution tables. Results The results obtained from conducting this experiment proved that Diet Coke really is lighter in weight than Coke. The following graph is a bi-modal histogram depicting the Coke data. This graph corresponds with the frequency distribution table next to it for the Coke data.

The Five Number Summery for Coke is:

The following graph is a relatively mound shaped histogram that depicts the Diet Coke data. This graph is corresponding to the frequency distribution next to it for the Diet Coke data.

The Five Number Summary for Diet Coke is:

Conclusion In conclusion, through the process of taking a random sample of fifteen out of a population size of twenty-four for each type of soda I came to the conclusion that Diet Coke really is lighter than Coke. The reasoning behind Diet Coke being lighter than Coke is unknown to me, but now I know that it is through statistical analysis and not because of an assumption that diet should be lighter than regular coke.
