Name of Lesson: The Role of Ribosomes in Protein Synthesis

Grade Level: 9th Grade Subject: Basic Biology (Cell Biology) Prepared by: Kerstin Alicki Overview and Purpose: This lesson provides an overview of the role ribosomes play inside a cell. Students will be introduced to the concepts of cell structure and organelles as well as protein synthesis. Educational Standards

PO 2. Compare the form and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their cellular components. Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned

recognize and locate a ribosome in an illustration of an animal cell recall the role and function of ribosomes in a cell discuss the role DNA plays in protein synthesis describe the importance of protein synthesis for the organism summarize why ingesting amino acids is important for any organism

Materials Needed: Laptop projector 1:1 Laptops Beef jerky

Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.)

Raven, P., Johnson, G., Losos, J. & Singer, S. (2010). Biology. New York: McGraw-Hill. Interactive Illustration of an Animal Cell Filament Games: Cell Command Animation: Protein Synthesis

Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

1. Teacher shows students interactive illustration of animal cell from cellsalive.com on projector.

2. Teacher has students open page in Biology to electron miscroscope photo of the rough endoplasmic reticulum that allows you to see ribosomes. 3. Teacher has students look at illustrated close-up of the rough endoplasmic reticulum that features ribosomes in blue. 4. Students play Cell Command Game. 5. Whole class watches Protein Synthesis animation.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. Class together reviews cell structure and function of various organelles from previous lesson. 2. Students work in groups of three to answer question catalogue. 3. Class discusses question catalogue.

Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

1. Reviewing material from previous session will better prepare students for being able to understand new information. 2. Having students answer questions through the different phases of the game will allow students to absorb and synthesize information. 3. Reviewing new information learned today in the form of the animation will allow reinforce lesson. 4. Eating a beef jerky at the end of class will reinforce the fact that organisms need to nourish themselves in order to be able to build all the proteins the organism needs to survive.

Notes In order for this lesson to work successfully, students need to already have been introduced to the four organic compounds (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids) as well as the structure of cells.
