Suffixes

Suffixes
Morphemes that are added to modify the function of that word. The
meaning of the word remains the same. For example, the word can be
functioning as a verb. After added a suffix, it can be a noun, an adjective,
or adverb.

Suffixes can be classified into three categories:

1. Noun-forming Suffixes
-ment - ure -ship -dom
-ation -tion -ty, ity -ness
-ition -ant -ent -y, -ery
-ification -sion -ing -al
-hood -er, -or -an, -n -ess
-ese -ee, -e -ism, ist -ance, -ence
For example:
amuse + ment amusement
protect + tion protection
king + dom kingdom
office + ial official
assist + ance assistance

2. Verb-forming Suffixes
-ate -ize -en
-s, -es -ify -ed
For example:
motive + ate motivate
length + en lengthen
 class + ify classify
harmony + ize harmonize

3. Adjective-forming Suffixes
-able, ible -en, -n -less -al, -ial
-like -an, -n -ese -er, -r, -est, -st
-ly -ant, ent -fold -most
-ary, -ory -ful -y -ous
-ing -some -ative -ish
-word -ed -ive, -ative -ular
For example:
fashion + able fashionable
education + al educational
differ + ent different
advise + ory advisory
poison + ous poisonous
beauty + ful beautiful
