3.

RAW MATERIAL
All starting materials are fully annealed sheets, plates and coils in austenitic stainless
steels, in accordance with specification ASTM A/SA 240-480. Pipe of austenitic
grades in accordance with ASTM A/SA 312 and A778. Angle bar in accordance
with ASTM A/SA-276. Special Alloys according to their respective specifications.

4.

RECEIVING CONTROL AND INDENTIFICATION

Raw material and applicable documentation are checked before release to
production. Each component is hard stamped and coded for material grade and
production batch. These codes are recorded against heat number and material
certificate. Small fittings and fittings produced by machining are not die stamped but
are identified by marking of container with batch number.

5.

MANUFACTURE
Raw material is cold formed by either pressing, stamping, rolling, bending or
machining to final shape. Welding is performed to ASME IX requirements. All
ASTM A 403/SA403 products are supplied in the heat treated condition.
Pickling and passivation are carried out after manufacture and immediately prior to
final inspection.

6.

RADIOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION (X-RAY)

Unless provided by the specification, radiographic control is not included in the
Outokumpu standard program, but can be performed at an extra cost.

7.

END PREPARATION
ABeveled ends are supplied to ASTM - A/SA403 products or upon customer
request.

8.

WORKMANSHIP
Fittings shall have a quality finish and be free of injurious defects such as
contamination, cracks, porosities, cavities and oxides, that can be detected by visual
examination or equipment relating to the applicable specification.

9.

QUALITY
Outokumpu earns its reputation for quality by adhering to the stringent standards
as required by ISO 9002.
Quality checks are performed throughout the manufacturing process and at final
inspection.

10. MATERIAL TEST REPORTS

Material test reports are supplied upon customer request.

Three Good Reasons to Use

Elbows

OUTO

Side-Welded

OUTOKUMPU Side-welded elbows are stronger than

NOMINAL +10%

standard elbows
The weakest point on an elbow is the inside radius.
Outokumpu Side-welded elbows have been specially
designed to offer these advantages
Wall thickness 10% greater than nominal size on inside
radius
Welds located along the neutral line, away from the
inside radius.

OUTOKUMPU Side-welded elbows save you time and

money when doing field welds
Outokumpu Elbows are end calibrated to provide uniform
roundness for efficient pipe fit-up and weld cost savings.

OUTOKUMPU Side-welded elbows offer superior finish on

inside welds
Outokumpu elbows are automatically welded from the
inside. This provides superior weld smoothness on the
inside and easy root inspection from the outside.

OUTOKUMPU Side-welded elbows are available in I.D.

O.D. and I.P.S. sizes 3 to 8 and your choise of ASTM

Glossary of Terms
ANNEALING - The controlled process of heating and
cooling a metal to, among other ends, achieve a
reduction in hardness, remove stress, and to refine the
grain microstructure.
ANSI - American National Standards Institute.
ASME- American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
ASTM - American Society for Testing Materials.
AUSTENITIC - The family of chromium-nickel stainless
steels often referred to as the 300 series or 18-8
group. These steels can only be hardened by cold
working. In the annealed condition they are
nonmagnetic. In general, they have good corrosion
resistance, good formability, and are readily weldable.
BRIGHT ANNEALING - An annealing process that
employs a reducing gas atmosphere. Stainless steel
tubing annealed in this manner has a bright, clean
appearance and is free from any oxides or scale. The
process eliminates the need for acid bath pickling
operations.

elongation (ductility).
HYDROSTATIC TESTING - A nondestructive test
procedure that checks for holes, cracks or porosity.
Tubing is pressurized internally with water to a high
pressure, but does not exceed material yield strength.
NO. 1 FINISH - A rough, dull surface that results from
hot rolling to the specified thickness, followed by
annealing and descaling.
NO. 2D FINISH - A dull finish that results from cold
rolling, followed by annealing and descaling and may
perhaps get a final light roll pass through unpolished
rolls.
NO. 2B FINISH - A brighter, cold rolled finish resulting in
the same manner as No. 2D finish, except that the
annealed and descaled sheet receives a final light roll
pass through polished rolls.

OUTO

BURST PRESSURE - The internal pressure that will

cause a piece of tubing to fail by exceeding the elastic
limit and tensile strength of the material from which the
tube is fabricated.
CHAMFER - To cut at an angle or bevel.

OVALITY - A quantitative measurement of how round a

tube is by comparing width to height. Limits are specified
on the appropriate ASTM specification of a product.

PASSIVATION - A protective layer of oxides on the

surface of a metal that resists corrosion. This passive
oxide layer is the chief reason why stainless steels have
such good corrosion resistant properties. It is natural
phenomenon, but can be accelerated by special
passivating solutions that can be applied to tubular
products.

PROUD TO BE

DESTRUCTIVE TESTING - Any of the mechanical tests

performed on an expendable sample of tubing to check
physical properties. These tests include: tensile, yield,
elongation, hardness, flare, flattening, bend and burst.

PICKLE - Chemical or electrochemical removal of surface

oxides.

REGISTERED

DUCTILITY - The property that permits permanent

deformation before fracture by stress in tension.

POROSITY - Unsoundness caused in cast metal by the

presence of blowholes and shrinkage cavities.

ISO-9002
CAN3-Z299.3

ELONGATION - The amount of permanent extension in

the vicinity of the fracture in the tension test; usually
expressed as a percentage of the original gauge length,
as 25% in 2.

EDDY CURRENT TESTING - A nondestructive testing

procedure that is a continuous process performed on
the tubular products during fabrication and in final
inspection. It is by nature an electrical test that checks
tubing (against a calibrated standard) for possible
defects such as holes, cracks, gouges, etc. on both
inside and outside surfaces of the tube.
G A S T U N G S T E N ARC W E L D I N G ( G T A W ) - A n a r c
welding process that uses an arc between a tungsten
electrode (non-consumable) and the weld pool (base
metal of strip). A high quality full fusion weld is achieved
using no filler metal (i.e. the weld is the same metal as
the rest of the tube). The GTAW process is also
commonly referred to as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)
welding.

HARDNESS - Hardness of tubular products is measured

on samples of tubing using a standard Rockwell
Penetrator and direct result of annealing temperatures
and material properties. In general, as the hardness
number increases, both tensile and yield strengths
increase along with a corresponding decrease in

PSI - Common engineering abbreviation for pounds per

square inch. A measurement of stress in a material.

SENSITIZATION - Sensitization is caused in stainless

steels by chromium carbide precipitation at grain
boundaries in the heat affected zone when heated in the
800 to 1600 degree F temperature range. This
removes some chromium from solution in the grain
boundaries, thereby reducing the corrosion resistance of
these local areas. The problem can be remedied by using
low carbon base material and filler material to reduce
the amount of carbon available to combine with
chromium.
TENSILE STRENGTH - The maximum load per unit area
that a material is capable of withstanding before it fails
(pulls apart). Units are in pounds per square inch (PSI).

YIELD STRENGTH - The load per unit area that a

material can withstand before permanent deformation
(nonelastic) occurs. It is conventionally determined by a
0.2% offset from the modulus slope on a stress/strain
diagram. Units are in pounds per square inch (PSI) and
referenced to 0.2% offset in most literature.

ASTM A-774 AS-WELDED WROUGHT AUSTENITIC
STAINLESS STEEL FITTINGS

A S T M A - 4 0 3 W R O U G H T AUSTENITIC STAINLESS
STEEL PIPING FITTINGS

This specification covers five grades of as-welded

unannealed, wrought austenitic stainless steel
fittings for low-pressure piping and intended for low
and moderate temperatures and general corrosive
service. The term fittings applies to butt and
socket welding parts such as 45 and 90 elbows,
tees, reduces, wyes, laterals, crosses, and stub
ends.

This specification covers two general classes, WP

and CR, of wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings
of seamless and welded construction covered by the
latest version of B16.9, B16.11, B16.28, or MSS
SP-79 and MSS SP-43. All fittings must be furnished
in the heat treated condition. Class WP fittings are
subdivided into four sub-classes.

This specification covers as-welded fittings 3 through

48 inch outside diameter and nominal wall
thicknesses 0.062 through 0.500 inch.
The tolerances allowed under this specification can
be found in MSS SP-43.

required

for

this

1. The fittings shall be made from flat-rolled steel,

formed by a hot or cold process, and welded by a
shielded welding process with or without the
addition of filler material.

WP-WX

All welds, whether made by the

fitting manufacturer or the
starting material manufacturer,
radiographically examined.

WP-WU

All welds, whether made by the

fitting manufacturer or the
starting material manufacturer.
Ultrasonically examined.

2. Fittings shall be furnished clean and free of scale.

PROUD TO BE

3. The joints shall be full penetration double-welded

or single-welded butt joints employing a fusion
welding process with or without the addition of
filler metal.

Class CR fittings are those manufactured to the

requirements of MSS SP-43, and have pressure
ratings equal to that prescribed for the specified
matching pipe.

REGISTERED

4. Surface imperfections such as handling marks,

die marks, shallow pits, and scale patterns will
not be considered rejectable, provided the
imperfections are removable within 10% of the
nominal wall or 0.002 inch (0.05mm), whichever
is greater. Removal of surface imperfections is
not required unless special finishes are specified.

ISO-9002
CAN3-Z299.3

5. Each fitting shall be legibly marked with the

manufacturers name or brand, the schedule
number of pressure class or thickness, the
spe cified size, the specification number, the
grade of material, the heat number or
manufacturers heat identification.

ANSI B16.9 WROUGHT STEEL BUTTWELDING

FITTINGS
This specification governs the dimension and
tolerance of steel buttweld fittings. Only the
dimensional characteristics of B16.9 apply to
stainless steel fittings. The specification covers pipe
size fittings from 1/2 to 24. B16.9 requires
fittings to be manufactured to the pressure
temperature ratings for the matching pipe.

ASME SA-403 WROUGHT AUSTENITIC STAINLESS

STEEL PIPING FITTINGS

This specification, which is used by fabricators of

pressure vessels, is identical with ASTM
Specification A403/A 403 M-86 except for editorial
differences in Table 1.

MSS SP-43 WROUGHT STAINLESS STEEL BUTT

WELDING FITTINGS
This standard covers overall dimensions, tolerances,
and marking for wrought stainless steel buttwelding
fittings. In this standard wrought is used to denote
fittings made of pipe, tubing, plate, bar, sheet, strip
or forgings.
This standard covers only fittings made for use with
those in ANSI B16.9.
The tolerances referenced in this specification are
listed on page 31 of this catalog. MSS SP-43 is the
specification which is referenced in A774 as the
allowable tolerance for light wall stainless steel
fittings. Note that even though A774 was intended
to cover tube fittings as well as pipe fittings, MSS
SP-43 technically only covers fittings made for use
with Schedule 5s or 10s pipe.
