IMPORTANT!!!

If you use a third-party firewall instead of Windows Firewall, you NEED to ADD to it an exception for TCP
port 80 (incoming direction). The same MUST BE done for Remote Desktop (TCP 3389). Also, sometimes
some antivirus programs need to be configured too. If you have doubts, contact me or make a search
with Google: “open ports firewall McAfee”, for example.
PLEASE, DON’T LET THIS STOP YOU...I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT. =)
Open ports in your ADSL

 Why?
 Right now, any computer INSIDE
your local network (home I’m at

network) can access “C600” Brazil

remotely. Excellent!
C600
I’m in
Japan M65

 But what about if is in

Japan (OUT of your home network
–Internet–) and needs to access
“C600” in Brazil?
Open ports in your ADSL
modem/router. I protect
your home
network.

 The answer is: you MUST

configure the firewall
embedded into your ADSL
modem/router to allow “M65”
to connect to and
(both hosted in “C600”).
Open ports in your ADSL
modem/router.
Mmm…Let me check my ports…

Oh yes! Ports TCP 80 and 3389 are

opened. Both are still “tied” to
“C600”.

I will take you with “C600”. May I come into your local
Welcome! network?

I need to talk with “IIS” and

“Remote Desktop”.

the best home
network firewall!!!

NOTE: Now, “C600” and “M65” are on DIFFERENT networks.

“Remote Desktop” uses “TCP 3389” door. (Oh, sorry! Port, I mean)
“IIS” uses famous “TCP 80” port.

IMPORTANT!!!

This configuration depends a lot on the brand of your ADSL modem/router

(Linksys, 2WIRE, Belkin, 3COM, etc.).

The main point is to “tie” “TCP 80” port (web server) and “TCP 3389”
(remote desktop) to your HOME PC. In other words: to OPEN those ports on
your FIREWALL and “tie” them to your HOME PC (“forward ports”).

If you get stucked, please contact me or use Google: “how-to forward ports
linksys”, for example.

PLEASE, DON’T LET THIS STOP YOU...I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT.

Remember names, not numbers!

 If you type this address in your HOME PC:

http://whatismyhost.com/, you will know your
Internet address or PUBLIC IP address
that your Internet Service Provider (“ISP”)
has assigned to your whole local network
(“LAN”). For example: “189.144.176.14”.
 That’s the way PCs around the world know
you exist. But what about humans? It’s hard
C600
to remember those numbers. Moreover,
your ISP changes your PUBLIC IP
address every week or so (it’s “dynamic”).
 We don’t want to check it every time it
changes in order to give it to our friends:
http://189.144.176.14/pictures
Remember names, not numbers!

 Humans WANT to use something like

“www.google.com” (DNS name), not “64.233.167.99”
(public IP address).
 Both of them take you to the same place:
Hey!, I’m Google! In fact, they are like synonyms!
just what
you are
looking
 So, we need 3 things:
for!!!  First, a DNS name: “yourname.servehttp.com”
 Somebody who remembers those synonyms (DNS
name and public IP address) and advises any PC I’ll send
it to my
which public IP address to use when somebody DNS
types your DNS name in a browser. Moreover, it server!

must be able to receive updates from your

HOME PC when your ISP changes your public IP
address. This is your NEW
public IP address
 Must be free! NO fees! for your LAN….. C600

PC for changes to take effect!

C600

IMPORTANT!!!
If you want to TEST your address http://yourname.servehttp.com/Funny (for example) in the web browser
of YOUR HOME PC BEFORE you give it to your friends, then YOU MUST accomplish this step.

If not, you will receive a “Unauthorized: Logon Failed” message from IIS no matter if you used correctly
your personal account OR “myFriends” account. I know this is silly because you’re testing FROM your
OWN HOME PC and it must work…but that´s a Microsoft security feature within Service Pack 2 (SP2).
