Nortel UMTS Radio Network Controller (RNC)

Offering wireless operators a feature-rich RNC with industry-leading dependability, performance, and carrier-grade capabilities The overview
Based on Nortel Networks industryleading Passport multiservice switch platform, the RNC offers high availability and performance while delivering investment protection by using the Passport 15000, which is widely deployed across wireless and wireline high-speed packet networks around the world. In addition to leveraging the ATM and IP features already available on the Passport platform, the RNC includes new interfaces such as Channelized STM1, Packet over SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, OC-12/ STM-4, and leading-edge processor modules to deliver high-speed, high-touch bearer services.

Carrier-grade reliability
The RNC offers industry-leading, carrier-grade reliability, including: Availability target beyond RQMS recommendation (99.999 percent) Automated, hot insert, load balancing of modular components for smooth and low cost capacity growth 1+1 or N+P sparing or load sharing of all elementsno single point of failure Minimal engineering time for capacity extensions In-service software upgradesno service interruption or downtime

3G mobility, 3G-2G and 2G-3G mobility Security Infrastructure-sharing capabilities Large variety of radio bearers Sophisticated ATM features Location services In addition, the RNC has been designed to support, with a software upgrade, features that will enable operators to drive future growth, expansion, and evolution such as HSDPA, MBMS, Iu-Flex, and unied RRM as well as continued commitment to ongoing enhancements on current functionality.

Enhanced Radio Resource Management

The RNC is powered with enhanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) algorithms, which are based on Nortel Networks extensive CDMA and data network experience. Nortel Networks enhanced RRM solution allows wireless operators to maximize the number of subscribers with an efcient usage of the scarce spectrum resource, increasing revenues without any additional investment. The RRM solution is a key aspect of Nortel Networks end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) solution, which provides consistent mechanisms across access, core, transport, and application servers to the operator, and ensures Quality of Experience (QoE) for the end user.

High capacity
The RNC supports industry-leading capacity per liter solution with 300 Mbps switching capacity over the Iu interface at commercial launch. On the current Passport platform, RNC capacity can be doubled using simple card upgrades and it also provides a plug-and-play capability to allow hot module insertion and extraction when upgrading or changing cards. The RNC has been designed to evolve to even higher capacity congurations to support higher data speeds, providing investment protection while enabling cost-effective network evolution for the wireless operator.

Common platformreducing cost of ownership

In addition to the RNC, a number of key components in the core wireless network are based on the eld-proven Passport platform, including the SGSN, Media Server, and PSTN Gateway. As well, the Passport is a key node in the ATM and IP transport network. Leveraging the Passport platform enables wireless operators maximum re-use of their infrastructure, which results in a reduction in operational costs.

Feature-rich product
The RNC supports all the software features required by an operator to be successful in UMTS, including:

Clear path for seamless evolution to next-generation wireless data networks

The RNC is IP ready today. The migration to an all IP UTRAN can be achieved through a simple software upgrade, with no forklift required, ensuring investment protection for wireless operators. Leveraging the multiservice capabilities of the Passport platform, ATM and IP are supported simultaneously on the RNC, which is key to enable smooth migration to nextgeneration wireless data networks. The RNC offers cost-efcient, exible capacity upgrades. When the trafc increases, the RNC capacity can be upgraded by simply adding new generation cards. This signicantly reduces OPEX related to network re-engineering required in case a second RNC needs to be added. The RNC is interface rich. As a result of the extensive number and type of interfaces already available on the Passport platform, the RNC offers many diverse physical interfaces including E1, E3, clear channel OC3/STM1, channelized STM1, Gigabit Ethernet, and OC-12/STM-4.
