SPECIFICATION-SECTION C BRICKWORK A Cement The cement shall be as previously described in Concrete Work.

B Sand

The sand for mortar shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 1200 and shall be clean, sharp, fresh water river sand, free from clay and other impurities and shall be washed and/or screened if required by the S.O. C Water

Water shall be as previously described in Concrete Work. D Plasticiser

The plasticiser for mortar shall be of an approved type and used strictly in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Plasticiser based on Vinsol Resins shall comply to B.S. 4887. E Mortar Cement mortar for all brickwork above ground shall be composed of one part of cement and six parts of sand mixed as described for concrete and with the addition of mortar plasticiser. Cement mortar for all brickwork below ground shall be composed of one part cement and three parts of sand mixed as described for concrete. Cement mortar shall be used within two hours of mixing after which the batch shall be rejected. No old mortar shall be mixed in with new mortar. F Bricks

Clay bricks shall be obtained from an approved kiln and shall be of standard size, hard, sound, well burnt and free from active lime. All bricks shall have a minimum crushing strength of 1,000 psi. No soft, broken, twisted or otherwise defective bricks shall be allowed to be used. No brick shall absorb more than 15% of its own weight when soaked in water for 24 hours. The dimensions and tolerances of all bricks shall comply with all respects to BS 3921:1974. Bricks shall be unloaded by hand and stacked on a clean hard surface. Bricks shall be obtained from an approved manufacturer strictly confirming to the B.S. standards in quality and dimensions. Bricks for general bricklaying shall be well-burnt clay ricks. Cement and sand bricks where specified for use must be obtained from an approved source and if cast must be as follows:

Size Bricks shall be of a standard size but the minimum acceptable size for the works shall be as given below:Length (mm) 216 mm (8 ) Width (mm) 102 mm (4) Depth (mm) 76 mm (3)

Materials a) b) Bricks shall consists of an intimate and uniform mixture of sand and cement. The sand and cement shall be mixed in the ratio of 6 sand by volume to 1 cement by weight in a mechanical mixer capable of taking one bag of cement (50kg of cement shall be taken as 0.0283 m3). The sand shall be clean, hard, sharp river or mining sand, free from all deleterious matter and shall pass through a 6mm mesh B.S. sieve. The sand shall be washed or screened as directed by the S.O. The cement used in the manufacture of bricks shall comply in all respects with B.S. 12 for Portland Cement.

Manufacturer Bricks shall be made from a machine of approved type operated either electrically or by a petrol motor. It shall have a mixer incorporated with the pressing machine.

Curing After removal from the machine the surface of the bricks shall be scratched and they shall be matured on the pallets under shade in separate rows on brick high with a space between each brick. For the first 24 hours after removal from the machine the bricks shall be kept wet by watering through a fine spray. Two days after removal from the machine the bricks shall be removed from the pallets and shall be matured under roof cover for an air space between the bricks for a period of 26 days. They must be raised from the ground. Each batch of bricks shall be carefully dated. Bricks removed from the manufacturing yard after maturing to the working site shall be protected from rain and damp by the use of portable covers right up to the time they are laid in the walls.

Compressive Strength The minimum compressive strength at 24 days shall be 450kg.per 25mm2 of 16 metric tons per brick. After 24 days, samples will be taken at random from the Contractors stock pile by the S.O. for test. All manufactured bricks or condemned bricks shall be removed from the site at the Contractor' expense.

Samples of all bricks are to be submitted to the S.O. for approval before being used or before placing bulk order. All subsequent deliveries shall be up to the standard approved. B Brickwork

All bricks shall be soaked in water for a least half an hour immediately before being laid. All work must be protected form the suns rays during the day on which it is laid and also during the following day. The Contractor must provide sufficient number of gunny bags and/or kajangs to ensure that the works are protected well. Top of wall where work has stopped shall be thoroughly wetted before any further walling is commenced upon them. All brickwork except half brick walls, shall be in English Bond. Half brickwalls shall be in Stretcher Bond. All shall be built in level courses, no four courses to rise more than 0.30m in addition to height of the bricks laid dry. The perpendiculars, quoins and all angles shall be worked perfectly true and upright. Bats are to be used only where required for bonds. No portion to exceed 1.00 m above adjoining parts whilst being built and all working junctions to be racked back and not toothed up. C Faced Work

All facing bricks and fair-faced brickwork shall be constructed with a uniform face internally or externally as shown in the drawings, carefully set in cement mortar raked out joint and pointed with a neat weathered joint as work proceeds. Coloured cement jointing will be used if so specified. All areas of fair faced brickwork or facing brick shall be protected by gunny sacking, kajangs or other suitable material from mortar droppings, rubbing, staining or other surface adhesions until such time as work is handed over as complete. No rubbing down of brickwork shall be permitted. No faced work shall be painted or shall given any form of surface treatment without the approval of the S.O. D Fire Brickwork. Fireclay Bricks are to be Fireclay Bricks SK 36 obtainable from South East Asia Industries Sdn. Bhd. Or other equivalent and approved types all to be laid as instructed by the S.O. and in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation. E Concrete Grille Blocks

Concrete grille blocks shall comply to B.S. 2028:1953 and shall be of the pattern and sizes shown on the drawing. The grille blocks shall be manufactured from ordinary Portland Cement, dry mixed in the ratio of 1 part cement to 3 parts of sand and pressure pressed in metal moulds. All blocks shall then be cured for at least two weeks and shall not be used until at least two months from date of manufacture has lapsed. All defective, chipped or under strength blocks shall not be used and shall be removed from site immediately. All blocks shall be finished smooth, ready to be painted. Built concrete grille block walls at locations indicated, bedded and pointed in cement and sand mortar (1:3).

BRICKWORK (Contd) A Bonding Ties

Provide bonding ties consisting of 6 mm diameter mild steel rods 360mm long, hooked both ends, one cast into concrete columns and the other built into brickwork. Tie 450 mm x 50mm strips of Exmet to top of bars to form adequate brickwork bond. B Damp-proof Course

The damp-proof shall be bitumen damp-proof course with hessian base and shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 743 ref: A. the strips are to laid according to the manufacturers instructions in the whole thickness of the brickwork 150mm above concrete ground slab or beam, or as shown on the drawings. C Damp Proof Membrane

Damp proof membrane shall be the heavy grade polythene sheet laid neatly on hardcore/sand bed with all joints twice 50mm folded and stapled together. Precautions must be taken to ensure the sheets are not torn or punctured particularly during construction stage.
