Types of Reactions

Cristina Alferez Jimenez Purpose:

To become more familiar with different types of reactions by conducting several reactions and observing the results.

Prelab:
1.Formation is when two elements react to make a compound. 2.Decomposition is when a compound separates into two element that it was once made of. 3.Single replacement is when an element plus a compound react tom make a new compound and an element. 4.Double replacement is when two compounds react to make two bran new compound. 5.combustion is when the burning of a substance produce water vapour and carbon dioxide

Materials:
150 ml beakers Tongs Medicine droppers test tubes Bunsen burners wash bottles hoffman apparatus scoopula metals-Al, Zn, Cu, Mg Various solutions

Procedure:
1.Create an observation table 2.Each station has a different reaction. Go to each one and fallow the procedure. 3.Record your results. 4.Clean up lab station before moving on to the next station. if there is waste container that the station, rinse the beaker with distilled water. Do not pour down the drain.

Observations:
Observations on a separate sheet.

Analysis:
1. The five pieces of evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred are bubbles, ouder change, energy change, state change, and colour change. 2. 1. Formation 2.Single replacement 3.Decomposition 4.Decomposition 5.Combustion reaction 6.Single replacement 7.Double replacement 8.Formation 9.Double replacement

10.Single replacement 11.Formation 12.Decomposition 3. 1.Co(NO3)2(aq) + NaOH(s)-> Co(OH)2(s) +2NaNO3(aq) 2.Zn(s)+ 2HClO3(aq)-> H2(g)+Zn(ClO3)2(aq) 3.H2O(l)+C12H22O11(s)-> 4.2H2O(l) -> 2H2(g)+O2(g) 5.C25H52(s)+36O2(g)->25CO2(g)+26H2O(l) 6.Cu(s)+2AgNO3(aq) ->Cu(NO3)2(aq)+2Ag(s) 7.CuSO4(aq)+2H2O(l)-> Cu(OH)2(s) +H2SO4(aq) 8.food colouring formula unknown 9.Pb(NO3)2(aq)+2KI(s)->PbI2(s)+2KNO3(aq) 10.2Al(s)+3CuCl2(s) ->3Cu(s)+2AlCl3(s) 11.Mg(s)+O2-> MgO2(s) 12.(NH4)2Cr2O7(aq)-> 2NH4(s)+Cr2O7(s) 4. they have to be balanced because the mass of the reactants are never lost or created therefore the products must equal the original mass. 5.#3 it just dissolved and didnt change the composition of the substances at all, and the other one would have been #8 the colour only changed not the chemical structure.

Evaluation:
In these experiments we were able to become more familiar with the 5 types of reactions shown above. The 5 reactions are formations, decompositions, single replacement, combustions, and a double replacement. I feel that nothing really went wrong but the things that could have gone wrong would include the error of measurements of the substances used, not being as accurate, or the faulty equipment, tampered or unclean equipment due to previous groups, switched substances and misbehaviour around the experiment station. I feel that the data collected was accurate and that the experiments were well executed by my partner and myself. Although i have never done any of these experiments before, the only thing that really surprised me was the formation of a precipitate. I was not at all expecting that to occur but it was very fascinating to see it happen first hand all from two liquids. Another thing that surprised me was the product of station 6, I was not expecting the greyish clumps to form on the piece of copper. It was a very interesting that such things could form like that. I have learned many things from these experiments and am quite happy that I was able to be included in it.
