Civic Welfare Training Service [MAPA-CWTS] MAPA-CWTS STUDENTS RELEVANT SOCIETAL CONCERN SUMMARY FORM [RSC] DATE: CWTS SECTION: CWTS SECTION: RELEVANT SOCIETAL CONCERN: CWTS03-A10 Energy, Environment and Climate Change Issues: Philippines SIGNIFICANT LEARNING The study by the Asian Regional Research Program in Energy, Environment and Climate (ARRPEEC) is the overview of the country on how its industries practice energy-efficiency and environmentally sound technologies. The first part of the study tackles major industries and their role in the environment. The industries that were chosen to be studied were the Iron and Steel Industry, Pulp and Paper Industry and the Cement Industry for the said industries large contribution to the overall burden of environmental pollution. The study showed that the said industries have a lot to be improved because of their inefficiency in energy use and the large amount of Green House Gasses and other pollutants the industries emit. The second part of the study is the use of biomass as an energy source, its efficiency and its contribution in the environmental sector. Biomass is majorly used by the rural areas of developing countries. Biomass has been said to be more efficient and a good source of additional energy and can potentially substitute fossil fuels to reduce GHG emissions. Although it contributes less GHG emission than fossil fuels, its pollution is still of large-scale and a burden to the environment. The large-scale of pollutants the biomass produce is said to be caused by inefficient use of residues and improper waste management. In conclusion, biomass is of huge role of total energy in the country and of efficiency than fossil fuels but has a lot more rooms for improvement. SYNTHESIS OF THE ACTIVITY Not only the Philippines, but the whole world suffers from dealing with Green House Gasses and other pollutant in the environment and of proper practice in energy-efficiency. Major industries were of huge factor in climate change but without them, no economic growth will be attained. No energy source produces no pollutants. Whatever energy source and how efficient it is, the user will still be dealing with a proper
