Civil Engineering: Structural Engineering MSc


Civil Engineering problems require the application of analytical, decision-making and critical thinking skills - this course will provide students with the technical knowledge needed to develop these skills. Structural engineers are required to design structures to be safe for their users and to successfully fulll the function for which they have been designed for.
This course allows for specialisation in the eld of structural engineering. An introduction into the broader civil engineering subjects will be accompanied by a choice of specialised optional modules on your chosen theme. The course will concentrate on the technical knowledge and skills that are most relevant to the eld of structural engineering for the award of MSc in Civil Engineering: Structural Engineering. Students will develop: the ability to communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and by means of presentations to groups the ability to exercise original thought the ability to plan and undertake an individual project interpersonal, communication and professional skills

Course structure
The course consists of 120 credits of core and optional taught modules along with a 60 credit major individual research-based project. Please be aware modules may be subject to change. This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate rst degree. Previous projects have included: wind tunnel testing for tall buildings base isolation for reducing ground-borne vibration the effect on ordinary and high strength concrete coloumns when introducing bar chip polypropylene bres moment continuity for pre-stressed concrete beams using short insitu diaphram joint behaviours of one-pass precast concrete tunnel segments

Entry requirements
Applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a closely related subject. Applicants need to have studied multiple courses in structures, geotechnics and uids. English language requirements:

IELTS score of at least 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0 in individual elements TOEFL (paper based) score of at least 550 with a minimum of 4.0 in the writing element TOEFL (IBT) 79 no less than 17 in any element
