ABSTRACTION

This paper is written based on the observation how to apply lesson study in SMP N 1 Kretek Bantul D.I Yogyakarta. This training hold on 1 and 2 of June 2009 . It aims to prepare facilitators in order to have some skills dealing with the implementation of lesson study in classroom activities. Mr Yoshitaka Tanaka, team leader from Senior Analyst Education Development dari International Development Center of Japan (IDCJ), also came to that activities. Some lecturers and widyaiswara was invited in this training as well. Lesson study is a new kind of practical approach in order to improve the quality teaching and learning. In lesson study, teacher teach in her/his class and some observer come to her/his class in order to look for and write some obstacles happen. Lesson study is a new approach that has 3 phases. Phase one is plan, before doing teaching and learning teacher should prepare teaching and learning materials such as lesson plan and student worksheets. Phase two is do, after preparing all teaching and learning materials, one of teachers is chosen being model teacher. Model teacher wild hold teaching and learning in classroom activities whereas others teachers being observers who observe and find out some mistakes, obstacles and problems during classrom activities. Phase three is see, in this phase observers (including lecturers, widyaiswara, team leader) try to discuss some problems, obstacles and mistakes happened. It also called reflective phase cause some people try to reflect the problem happen in the classrom activities. In phase three they attempt to find out alternative solution to solve that problem. Hope, the next teaching learning activities will be better and more fruitful. In doing lesson study at that time, Ibu Sutaryati, maths teacher in SMP N 1 Kretek, had been chosen as model teacher. After she did phase plan and do in lesson study cyclus 1. They all came together in a certain room and discussed what problem happen and how to overcome it. Some obstacles appeared such as unrelated apperception with content, never give students doing exploration and experiment in maths, teacher never gave rewards to her/his students, there are students who turned teacher, same gender sit closely, appear some irrasional numbers in students calculation that make it difficult to find out ratio, and in evaluation sheet we still find our unapproprite problem. Some suggestions come up from phase three reflective section, such please use the small picture as reducing from the big one in order to teach the two congruent triangles. Also, give chache for student doing maths experiment by using some plastic strawes to bulid some congruent triangles. It will be more make sense. Another suggestion is please give rewards to your students after doing presentation. Please same sex seat separated. Avoid calculations that produce irrational numbers. Change the way students not to sit back while the teacher gives an explanation. The last is make the problem more realistic. After doing reflective in cyclus 1 then Ibu Sutaryati teach same topic in another class. Now, she looked more confidence. Teaching and learning run more smoothly. Class looks more alive and many students can grasp the concept better. Although there are problems such as students who do not always focus on his/her learning. I think that by doing lesson study, the process of teaching and learning will be better and students better understand subject matter. Also, by implementing lesson study will be able to improve teacher profesioalism. I recommend that the lecturers, widyaiswara, the teachers constantly promoting the lesson study at various schools.
