The Brubaker Buzz

October 27, 2011 Impor Mrs. Brubakers 4th Grade Issue 10

Two Very Important Events! To celebrate the successes of Nixa Public Schools, the students at High Pointe have been invited to the Academic Pep Rally at Nixa Jr. High on November 7th. This is a great way to show everyone how great our schools are! Because of this event, we will be eating lunch at a later time and it will be a sack lunch. We have also been invited to watch the play, West Side Story, at the high school on November 16th. Please send back the yellow permission form and $2.00 with your child by November 11th.
Its been a great beginning to second quarter! Weve continued to be busy and Im seeing a great deal of growth from everyone. We will continue to stay focused on building on top of what we already know. As you can imagine, there will be a significant amount of new material covered during these next few months. Please encourage your child to always try hard and give 100% of their effort. Some material will be very difficult, while others will be easier to learn. If you, your child, and I all work together, I have no doubt that your child will be a highly successful 4th grade student. Its been a great pleasure working with all of you and your child! Lets continue to make this year amazing and watch your children grow to new heights!

A Look Back
Its hard to for me wrap my mind around the time that flies while were in class. This week seems like it was only one day long! The kids always comment on how quickly the day goes by and I wouldnt have it any other way. It would be terrible to be bored with education at such a young age. This week we focused a great deal on science and how to read non-fiction text for meaning. While reading a great deal, we did learn a bunch too! We also talked about graphs and how they would change and become more useful as we get older and into upper grades. We discussed where we have seen graphs in the real world and what they told us. Then we collected data and began making a graph of our own. While were doing this activity, the students will learn several new vocabulary words that are associated with graphing. This week, we learned what the range of data is and how to find it.

Notice the schedule change for next week! The students will continue graphing next week and learn more great terms that come with graphing. We will look at mean, median, and mode, as well as, spread, outliers, and concentration. This is a fun filled unit that teaches great graphing skills. Drop by the hallway to see your childs work. Dont forget to look at your childs math check up that comes home each week. We correct them before they come home, but you can help them review the material by asking them to explain how they got their new answer. The more they teach, the better they learn. Social Studies will take center stage again next week. We will begin our unit Building our Nation. While in this unit, the students will be reading several non-fiction and historical fiction books to learn about our Founding Fathers, The Declaration of Independence, and other important details from our nations beginning. This is, by far, my favorite unit to teach. Im sure that I say that a lot! I love history and all the great things that we can learn! I plan on doing some big projects during this time. I hope all of you can come in to see the neat material that your child is learning. Dont forget to study spelling words. The first 10 words are always in your childs brain book on Friday. The others will be from lessons throughout the week. They are also written in the brain book to help them study at home. S.M.I.L.E.
