AS the nights draw in and the temperature seems to get cooler by the day I find myself veering towards the warming comfort of a glass of red wine. This evening will be my final wine tasting class with a group Ive been teaching for five weeks and I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect on which red wines over the space of those 5 weeks have been the most enjoyable. So this month Ill be recommending something from Argentina, Italy and Portugal, three of the countries that we focused on during our tasting sessions. Malbec is a grape variety that has become synonymous with Argentina, despite its French origins and its not difficult to see why it is described as being the black wine of Cahors, the region of France from where the grape originates. So dense is it in colour that whichever way you lean your glass, you can only see the dark inky hues of what is a full bodied, fruit packed red wine. The Malbec Nieto (8.25) is classic Malbec, deep in colour, bundles of blackcurrants and spice on the nose with a rich, full bodied palate that delivers all the flavour it promises on the nose. The Ciconia Tinto (7.25) is a red wine from the innovative wine region of Alentejo in southern Portugal, a region also famous for its cork trees. Named after the White Stalks that are said to live in this picturesque part of the country, the wine is a blend of local grape varieties Aragones and Touriga Nacional and some Syrah, the more widely known Shiraz. Spices and red berries on the nose with hints of smoke, this wine has lovely juicy fruit on the palate balanced with soft, chewy tannins and a complex, seductive finish. Finally the Nero dAvola, Cusumano (11.00) from Sicily was by far the hit of the Italian evening. Nero meaning black in Italian and Avola is the town in south eastern Sicily, from where the grape is named after. A luxuriously chunky red from this hot, Mediterranean island thatll give any new world blockbuster red a run for its money. Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:

Parking problems causing congestion outside Schools in the Overleigh and Westminister Park areas, normally as a consequence of school pick ups and drop offs. Plans to address the issue PCSO Pendrey and PCSO Fox will be working together distributing parking leaflets around the schools offering advice for parents on where and how to park safely. Local Priorities You said - The Meadows/The Groves - In previous years due to the warmer weather we have experienced issues with under age drinking and bbqs on the meadows in particular on weekday evenings and weekend days. High Visability footpatrol in the area, between the hours of 16.00pm and 21.00pm weekdays and 12.00pm 20.00pm on weekends. We did During August PCSO Pendrey along with the Community Safety Wardens have carried out high visibility patrols along the Meadows. Anyone found to be fishing here without a licence has been moved on from the area along with any persons found to be committing anti social behaviour. The next Community Action Meeting will take place on Thursday 3rd November @ 19:30 hours and will be held at St Marys Church Hall, Handbridge.

Polycystic ovaries syndrome affects 1 in 10 women and can show itself as early as puberty. Unfortunately the cause is unknown and there is at present no known cure, apart from radical surgery. The condition often presents itself with oily skin, acne, weight increase, particularly around the waist, excess hair growth to the face, neck, chest, stomach and back, but often thinning hair to the scalp, and irregular or no periods. Besides having small cysts containing fluid on their ovaries, women with Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome make more androgens (male hormones) in their ovaries. Researchers think that insulin may be linked to the increase of androgen production in the ovaries. Insulin is the hormone that controls the change of sugars, starches and other foods into energy. Many women with Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome have too much insulin and excessive insulin appears to increase the androgen production.

Delight as inspection team praise Catholic High School

THIS summer The Catholic High School, Chester celebrated its best ever GCSE examination results, and within days of the new school year starting found that the inspectors were due to call. OFSTED have just inspected The Catholic High School, Chester and confirmed, once again, that it is a good school with some outstanding features to its work. In her letter to the students at the school, lead inspector Joan Davis stated that we found that your school provides you with a good quality of education, and carried on to confirm that teaching is good. The school has worked effectively to improve the quality of teaching. Since the last inspection five years ago the standards expected have been going up consistently, and the headteacher John Murray, and chair of governors Peter Bulmer were both delighted to see that both the main school and the Sixth Form were rated as good by the inspection team. Outstanding celebrating our best ever results and results are very important I am equally pleased with the things the report has to say about the support our students get throughout the school, including at Sixth Form level. What the report has to say about the relationships between staff and students is wonderful. The school has been a specialist science college for eight years and the report confirms that the impact of the specialism on the school and the wider community has been extremely beneficial. Areas for improvement As always, the inspectors have left a number of areas for the school to improve. One of these is attendance, where the latest statistic of 92.7% is something the team felt the school could improve, despite all the efforts the school currently makes. Another area is lies in making sure that students understand their targets better and the teachers will be working on making sure that this happens. One area that the inspectors drew attention to was the support the school gets from parents. The number of questionnaires returned was exceptional despite the short notice, and the responses were very positive. Parents trust the school to keep their children safe and the inspectors gave the school an outstanding mark for the extent to which children feel safe. The school has been involved in the work of the anti-bullying alliance over the last five years and John Murray finished his comments by drawing attention to the section of the report

Nurserys museum boost

CHILDREN and parents at St Marys Community Nursery have done their bit to make visiting the Grosvenor Museum a fun experience for families. They have helped to design a free, fun, Explorer Pack aimed at the under fives. Cheshire West and Chester Councils Family Learning Service funded the project which brought together parents, carers and children from St Marys Community Nursery to work with the museum to develop the pack. It contains a range of fun activities, and an explorer hat and accessories, designed for the under fives, offering parents and carers a free activity which enables the whole family to explore the museum and enjoy learning together. The Explorer Pack available at the weekends and during school holidays focuses on three particular rooms which parents found most appealing for the under fives the Roman Galleries, the Period House and the Natural History Gallery. Chester Councillor Samantha Dixon said: I am sure parents and carers enjoyed helping to create this interactive pack and we must also thank the children from St Marys for providing the inspiration and helping to shape this initiative with some invaluable feedback.

NovembeR can be a damp and dreary month with frost killing off the last of the summer foliage and plants losing their leaves. Cherries, acers, amelanchier and oaks often have a last fling of red, orange and yellow leaves before they drop from the trees. Shrubs with berries will give a great display this year so look out for Cotoneasters which come in a wide range of different shrubs with red or yellow berries. Cotoneaster lacteus is a small tree with clusters of red berries and evergreen leaves. It is good as a hedge or left as a tree with arching branches. Cotoneaster horizontalis has herring bone shaped branches and looks great growing flat against a wall or gently arching over a fence with tiny white flowers in early spring and red berries in autumn. Cotoneaster x watereri John Waterer is a vigorous shrub with arching branches with clusters of red berries growing along the branch.

The crab apples have red or yellow fruit and if grown on a dwarfing rootstock will make a lovely small tree. Try Malus Gorgeous with red apples or Malus Golden Hornet with yellow apples and if you have the energy, you can make delicious crab apple jelly to go on your toast! Mountain ash or Sorbus trees are also hung with berries at this time of year. The birds will eat the red berries first, then the yellow and often not touch pink or white berries until mid winter. They are good trees for medium sized gardens with white flowers in spring then berries in autumn. Sorbus Pink Champagne has pink and cream berries, Sorbus Joseph Rock has yellow berries and Sorbus acuparia has red berries. Work to do this month can include cutting back tall roses and lavateras to prevent wind damage to the shrubs, cut off the larger leaves from hellebore plants so you can see the flowers easily and cut back dead foliage from perennials leaving enough to protect the plant over winter. Bare rooted trees, fruiting shrubs and roses start to be despatched in November so place your order now for those special plants. They will arrive by post and should be planted out into well prepared planting spots.

School celebrates centenary

Queens Park High School has been celebrating a centenary of educating children. The celebrations have included students both past and present collecting memorabilia for a special exhibition at the school. The exhibition spans the 100 years from 1911, when the Handbridge School opened as the City & County School to 2011, the 40th anniversary of the school becoming a comprehensive. The school has also held three well attended reunions for past students and a black tie Centenary Ball (organised by the Home School Association) which saw over 100 people attend. Catering for the ball was done by the company A Catered Affair which is owned by ex-student Sue Robinson (ne Finlay) with husband Mike. Current students joined in the celebrations this week with special assemblies and Year 10 catering students baking a special birthday cake and individual cakes for all students in the school.
