Zintel Group

accelerates the delivery of proactive call reporting using SQL-RD from ChristianSteven Software

When Zintel, a leading provider of communications technology solutions to businesses across New Zealand and Australia, needed an automated, flexible and proactive way of delivering reports to over 4,000 customers, it chose SQL-RD business automation and report scheduling from ChristianSteven Software. The resulting solution saved Zintel over $100,000 versus developing the application from the ground up and allowed it to accelerate the delivery of a proactive call reporting service which has further enhanced its reputation as a leading communications technology supplier.

Background and Challenge

With its head office in Auckland, Zintel Group employs around 250 staff across 4 divisions:

Zintel Communications offer telecommunications services, specialising in toll-free services; Zintel Enterprise and Cogent Zintel provide and support integrated communications, including telephony and maintenance for SME, large government and corporate customers; and Zintel Payments provides payment and billing technology and services.

Scott Lord, IS Manager at Zintel explains, “We pride ourselves on being champions of business.

Our customers have an expert and experienced account manager who works with them to understand their business, continually looking for innovative ways to add value to their business, which differentiates the service we provide.”

Scott saw the opportunity to improve the way that calling information was supplied to Zintel’s customers. This vital information enables customers to refine their call handling by providing critical call statistics, such as missed calls, overflow volumes, spikes and dips in activity, busy calls and failed connections.

Scott continues “Most other suppliers simply provide a web portal to their customers but we wanted to provide a more proactive and flexible service that would directly deliver

selected reports to our customers by email on

a

daily, weekly, monthly or even custom basis

their preferred format, from PDFs through to

.csv files.”

Zintel built a data warehouse using Microsoft SQL Server that allowed them to consolidate and mine the extensive and detailed calling information provided to them every day by telecommunications suppliers. This data is refined into ten or so key reports using Zintel’s unique billing and reporting system.

Scott adds, “Since what we were looking to achieve would mean producing upwards of 50,000 reports a month, we realised we also needed an automated way of scheduling and distributing the information.”

Scott’s team drew up a specification for the automated report delivery functionality needed to augment their existing billing and reporting system. Scott explains further, “We explored

the cost of having a third party build the extra functionality and it was upwards of $140,000.

It also meant delaying the new reporting service

until it was built, and, as with all software projects, there was no guarantee it would work first time.”

It was time to change tack and, believing that somebody somewhere must have already written an automated report delivery engine, Scott started searching online. He came across ChristianSteven Software SQL-RD and was impressed. “It would do 99% of what we were trying to achieve plus a whole lot more and it was already in use in thousands of major organisations around the globe. We estimated we could purchase and integrate the software for less than a quarter of the price of having it built, but, crucially, it would allow us to confidently accelerate our plans knowing it was already a proven solution.”

Solution and Benefits

After downloading the trial version of SQL-RD and running a short pilot, the team were ready to integrate and start building the report delivery schedules. Scott states, “SQL-RD is very intuitive and easy to use, and, because it was written specifically for a Microsoft SQL Server environment, it was also simple to integrate.”

SQL-RD is now a core part of Zintel’s operational systems, running full-time on a Microsoft server. Phase one, delivering reports to over 2,000 Australian customers, has been a great success, with phase two focusing on the New Zealand customer base. Every month SQL-RD is reliably delivering over 50,000 reports at the frequency or specific date/time specified by the customer and in their chosen format.

Scott continues, “Customer feedback has been very positive. Proactively providing detailed call information has enabled our customers, in conjunction with their account manager, to make better decisions about the best way to enhance and improve their call handling. In addition, having a flexible customer-driven approach to call reporting further underscores our commitment to being champions of business, and will ultimately help us to acquire and retain more customers.”

The Future

Overall, Scott is delighted with how the project has gone, “SQL-RD has enabled us to deliver real value to the business in a very short space of time and at a fraction of the cost of developing a system from the ground up. The other great thing is that we are only just scratching the surface of what SQL-RD can do. We are excited about the possibility of improving and differentiating our call reporting service even more by offering customers the flexibility of near real-time reports, data-driven alerts and on-demand reporting. We will also be able to increase our return on investment in SQL-RD still further by automating processes in other parts of the business as well as our own internal business reporting.”
