drian Simone is a 19
year old lance corpo-
ral who joined the
Marines after graduating from
Montville Township High
School last year. In mid-July, his
unit, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines,
Bravo Company was deployed
to Afghanistan. One month in,
while on patrol, his unit walked
across an IED (improvised ex-
plosive device). Adrian took
the brunt end of the explosion
and both his legs were severely
damaged. One of his squad
mates violated protocol to stay
in position and minimize addi-
tional causalities and raced to
his side to stop the bleeding,
saving his life. He was taken to
two hospitals in Afghanistan
and a hospital in Germany,
where the doctors tried to save
one leg. The damage was too se-
vere and both legs had to be am-
putated at or above the knee.
He is now recuperating at a hos-
pital in Bethesda, Md. He suf-
fered other injuries, but none as
severe, and there is no evidence
of spinal cord injury.
Friends who have visited
Adrian in Bethesda confirm
that his lighthearted personality
and upbeat view of the world
have not changed.
In an effort to assist
Adrian and his family, a close
friend, Jim Scannella, is organiz-
ing a Montville-based fun-
draiser. He would like to invite
you to join in saying thank you
to Adrian for his service and
sacrifice.
If you would like to con-
tribute to the Adrian Simone
Fund, make a check payable to
Lance Corporal Adrian Simone
and mail to: John Becker, 4 Or-
chard Dr., Towaco, NJ 07082.
If you would like to show
your support by sending Adrian
a thank you note, get well card
or letter, his address is: Lance
Corporal Adrian Simone, War-
rior Transition Battalion, Box #
40093, 8901 Wisconsin Ave.,
Bethesda, MD 20889-5600.
Supporting a hero!
I
f you thought layaway
plans had gone the way of
eight-track players and
floppy disks, think again. The
deferred payment or in-
stallment plan, once
popular with budget-
conscious consumers
especially during the
holiday season is mak-
ing a big comeback.
For people who
are unfamiliar with the
concept or were born
after the 1980s (when
installment plans gave
way to credit card pur-
chases and other types of fi-
nancing), layaway is a simple
way to purchase merchandise,
interest-free, over time. Con-
sumers select the items they
want to buy from a retailer of-
fering the plan, make a de-
posit, which often includes a
modest service charge, and pay
for the merchandise over a
specified period. Once the
item has been paid in full, the
retailer releases the goods to
the consumer. The only poten-
tial glitch is if the consumer
fails to make payments in full
or on time. In that event, the
retailer has the option of re-
turning the customers pay-
ments (fewer service charges)
and reselling the items.
While theres no
doubt that todays shaky
economy has contributed
to the revival of layaway
plans, economists and
representatives of several
of the nations leading
retailers and layaway
providers. Sears, K-Mart,
Burlington Coat Factory,
Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Toys
R-Us, and Hallmark insist
that the recession is only part
of the story. For retailers, lay-
away plans open the doors to
millions of new customers who
would not be able to make pur-
Layaway plans make a comeback
Buying items on layaway gives shoppers the
ability to pay in installments without any
interest. The concept is once again
gaining popularity in many stores.

Columbus is sponsoring a bene-
fit performance of The Wedding
Singer on Friday, Nov. 18 at 8
PM at the Barn Theatre in
Montville. With a brand new
score that pays loving homage
to the pop songs of the 1980's,
The Wedding Singer takes us

just be the coolest guy in the
room. The performance will be
preceded by a social with re-
freshments, starting at 7:00 PM.
Desserts will be served during
intermission. The cost of $27
($20 for students) includes hors

Montville Reformed Church
Womens Guild is hosting a
Holiday Shopping Bazaar. This
one stop shopping event will be
chases without them. For con-
sumers, paying in installments
is increasingly viewed as a
sound financial tool for pur-
chasing necessities and man-
aging expenses, particularly
during the holiday season.
Overall, layaway plans are
heavy on benefits, including:
No fine print: For the most
part, retailers layaway plans
are straightforward and easy
to understand.
No credit checks: Credit
checks are not required to
enter into a layaway contract.
Layaway is a great option for
people who are trying to re-
build their credit, due to fore-
closure or past credit card
problems.
No need to leave home:
Some retailers have launched
e-layaway programs, making
it possible for consumers to
purchase online over time.
There are only a few draw-
backs to layaway plans, but
they are worth noting:
Missed payments: Making
payments and making them
on time is the key to a suc-
cessful layaway purchase. The
penalty for missing payments
is the cancellation of the lay-
away contract. However,
most plans offer a seven-day
grace period for missed pay-
ments. It is important to
know the details of each re-
tailers plan before signing a
contract.
Missed sale prices: For shop-
pers who count on cashing in
on Black Friday sales, layaway
might not be an option. Some
retailers dont offer Black Fri-
day prices to layaway cus-
tomers, so it pays to check
with the stores you plan to
patronize before the holiday
shopping season begins.

arkets heat-up,
blood pressure boils
and tempers flare,
but, your retirement income
must remain constant
through all market condi-
tions, corrections and crashes.
Your retirement portfolio is
not a disposable and discre-
tionary fund. When you stop
working, thats it, no more
paycheck! Outside of any pos-
sible inheritance there are no
other fall-back zones or de-
fenses. Your portfolio is your
only lifeline! Have you
thought about it that way?
Its true, although hard to ac-
cept. If your portfolio is com-
promised, there will be only
your parents if theyre alive
and your children to rely on
maybe. Are you satisfied or
confident with these alterna-
tives to a failed portfolio? I
ask you, what may cause your
portfolio to fail? Better stated,
how many reasons or situa-
tions will we face during our
retirement years that have
the possibility of totally com-
promising our retirement nest
egg? I can think of 5 Forces
of Portfolio Demise, can you
think of any others?
1.Stock and Bond Market
Losses
2. Cost of Health Care in-
cluding deductibles and co-
pays
3. Long-term care in a nurs-
ing home or custodial care at
your own home
4. Taxes at death Income or
Estate Tax at both the Federal
and State levels
5. Lawsuit Liability when
you have assets, you are an
automatic target
If you become compro-
mised, mentally or medically,
yet are covered financially,
you still need the legal docu-
ments to appoint the people
that you select to make the fi-
nancial and health related de-
cisions on your behalf. Have
you done this yet? This is in
addition to or in concert with
your appointment of execu-
tor(s) and trustee(s). Have
you set up your portfolio to be
self-completing in providing
income for your monthly
maintenance and or for your
spouses benefit, regardless of
your health and decision
making abilities? Do you have
a wealth magnification and
transfer program to bolster
your bequest, best benefiting
your spouse and kids when
you are gone? Have you en-
dowed your charitable giving
so your gifts will keep on giv-
ing in perpetuity? Have you
set-up a self-completing re-
tirement program for your
children and grandchildren,
if you have any? Have you
made your Christmas vaca-
tion plans yet?
If youve answered no to
any of these questions, your
retirement and estate plan
needs a check-up from the
neck-up! I cannot stress
enough the vital importance
of preparedness. Remember
the 7 Ps: Proper Prior Plan-
ning Prevents Poor Perform-
ance Period! When it
comes to your portfolio and
retirement, remember the
goal is to: Maximize your In-
come Today while Protecting
Preserving and Protecting
your Wealth for Tomorrow

R
onnie is in kinder-
garten. Ronnies mo-
ther describes him as a
difficult child. He only wants
to wear old t-shirts and jeans.
He argues with his mother each
time she cooks something new
for dinner and refuses to eat. He
throws tantrums at the mall.
Shopping for clothes is almost
impossible. When playing with
other children, Ronnie is
bossy. Ronnie is happiest
when he is following his rou-
tine. He dislikes surprises.
When his mother and father
hug him, he stiffens. He loves
his German shepherd and will
lie on the floor with her for
hours. Ronnies mother wonders
what she is doing wrong.
In school, Ronnie has
been sent to the principals of-
fice several times for hitting
other children. He sometimes
refuses to participate in group
activities. During arts and crafts,
Ronnie usually asks to go to the
bathroom.
During his six year old
checkup, Ronnies mother de-
scribed these observations to
her pediatrician who recom-
mended an occupational ther-
apy evaluation. The evaluation
revealed that Ronnie has a sen-
sory processing disorder, specifi-
cally, a sensory modulation
disorder (SMD). This means
that Ronnies nervous sys-
tem over responds to every-
day sensations.
A child with a modu-
lation disorder can appear to
have behavior problems.
Refusal to participate in ac-
tivities, rigid adherence to
routines and pushing others
away are actually strategies
used to avoid what the
childs nervous system regis-
ters as a threat. Picture your-
self in the kitchen at
midnight. The lights are
turned off and you think
everyone is asleep. Suddenly
someone taps your shoulder. In
this situation, your nervous sys-
tem reacts with a fight or
flight response. You jump, your
pulse races, you feel afraid. For a
child with SMD, the fight or
flight response is triggered by
everyday stimulation including
the feel of a new shirt or glue on
their hands. Being bumped by
another child in line may be in-
terpreted as being punched.
Over reaction to one event is
only the beginning of the prob-
lem for a child with SMD.
Often they are unable to calm
their nervous system and the
sensory events build up over the
course of the day. Even if a child
has strategies to calm them-
selves, these may not appear so-
cially acceptable or may
interfere with life skills, as when
Ronnie spends arts and crafts
time in the bathroom. So what
can be done?
A qualified occupational
therapist uses a detailed parent
and child interview as well as
standardized assessments to de-
termine the nature of a sen-
sory processing disorder.
There are several types of sen-
sory processing disorders and
they can vary in degree and
presentation. Once the spe-
cific nature of the disorder is
uncovered, the family needs
to understand what is going
on. In almost all cases, the
parent and child are relieved
to hear that there are reasons
behind the behaviors and that
help is readily available.
Therapy for SMD consists
of age appropriate, motivating
play oriented activities that
aim to regulate the childs nerv-
ous system. Various types of sen-
sory rich activities are used
including: movement, deep
pressure and resistance which
stimulate the sensory receptors
in the muscles and joints, tac-
tile, visual and auditory input.
Foods and scents can also be
used. As the child responds pos-
itively in therapy, a sensory diet
is developed for home and
school. This diet incorporates
activities and modifies chal-
lenges to enable the child to in-
crease their abilities to not only
tolerate, but to enjoy and learn
from sensations they previously
avoided. For Ronnie, the vac-
uum cleaner turned out to be
one of his favorite toys. The
vibration helps to regulate his
nervous system! His mother, un-
derstanding his challenges,
washes new clothes several
times before Ronnie wears them
so that they felt softer and smell
like his other clothes. She has
found that Ronnie prefers raw
carrots and string beans to the
cooked ones that she had been
trying to convince him to eat.
Most importantly, she learned
that Ronnie enjoys bear hugs as
long as she does not stroke his
hair. Ronnie and his teacher are
pleased that when he stands at
the end of the line to avoid
being bumped, he no longer
pushes or hits his peers. She
moved his desk so that he sits at
the end of the row. Ronnie is al-
lowed to use a special brush to
scrub his hands before and after
finger painting.
Working with his occupa-
tional therapist helped Ronnie
to learn what he needs to do to
feel just right. He can now use
his strategies before going to
birthday parties and play dates.
He is making friends and is a
happier child.

nosed with Sensory Modulation
Disorder or has been classified
as difficult and would like to

O
h, no ... not again!
Your child awakes
feverish and listless,
complaining of a hot, painful
ear. It is the fourth time this
year shes contracted an ear
infection and you are desper-
ate for answers. More antibi-
otics, tubes in the ears ... what
are the alternatives?
Middle ear infection, or
otitis media, affects two-
thirds of children by two years
of age, making it the most
common medical diagnosis in
children. Approximately a
third of all children will ex-
prience at least six episodes of
this disorder before entering
school. Some children have
up to twelve episodes in a sin-
gle year. Several bouts of re-
occurring infections can
result in permanent damage
to the inner ear.
Typical medical treat-
ment of otitis media involves
the prescription of oral an-
tibiotics, commonly amoxi-
cillin. However, research
published in the Journal of
the American Medical Asso-
ciation (Dec /91) reveals not
only is amoxicillin ineffective
for otitis media, it actually
worsens the condition. There
is also the problem of re-
peated use of antibiotics and
the evolution of superbugs,
those growing numbers of an-
tibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Eventually, despite fail-
ure of the antibiotics, the
bodys own immune system
takes care of the infection
and all is well. Or so it ap-
pears, until the next reoccur-
rance. After several episodes
of this, it is recommended
your child has tubes im-
planted in their ears, a proce-
dure called tympanostomy
tube surgery, the most com-
mon operation for children.
But wait, didnt you read
something about this ... yes,
the April 1994 Journal of the
American Medical Associa-
tion published research that
examined 6,429 cases of tym-

atthew graduated with honors from New York
University in 1997 and began a satisfying career in
orthopedics specializing in spine rehabilitation. Ever
keen to learn and do more for his patients Matthew began
studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic Manual
Therapy. This training exposed him to the concept of
Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referred
to as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placed
not on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-
a thought and decision making process, involving analytical
examination and assessment on which treatment decisions are
based.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-
renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, further
expanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and
nerve injury treatments. Not to be missed, Matthew also
trained in the McKenzie Diagnosis and treatment of the spine.
Matthew believes the combination of this training and
education in the Australian, New Zealand and American
treatment strategies have allowed him to provide broader
range of treatment options thereby helping more patients.
Matthew has been a Director of Physical Therapy for 8
years, helping develop spine and sports clinics into leaders in
their respective communities. He is excited and eager to bring

T
he term polydipsia
refers to excessive
thirst. We see this as
an increase in the amount of
water being drank, which in
turn usually leads to polyuria,
which means your cat is uri-
nating more often and a
larger volume.
These changes may be
very subtle and slowly pro-
gressive or quite obvious. You
may observe an increase in
the amount of wet litter in a
cats litter box or even acci-
dents outside the litter box.
Some cats may begin drinking
from a dripping faucet in the
sink or from an open toilet
bowl. However, if you want to
determine exactly how much
your cat is drinking, allow
him only one source of water
and subtract the amount left
in the bowl after 24 hours
from the amount you put in
originally. On average, cats
take in about 2 cups per
day for a 10 pound cat. This
includes any water that is
taken in from other sources,
such as, from canned food.
If you determine that
your pet is drinking exces-
sively or just think its more
than usual, make an appoint-
ment with your veterinarian
because polyuria and polydip-
sia (drinking and urinating
more) can be an early sign of
a serious disease. These can
include: kidney failure, dia-
betes mellitus, hyperthy-
roidism (overactive thyroid),
liver disease, electrolyte ab-
normalities, pyometra (uter-
ine infection), other less
common endocrine disorders
and diabetes insipidus.
Several diagnostic tests
may be needed to determine
the cause of your cats
polyuria and polydipsia be-
cause many different diseases
can cause these signs. Any
visit to your vet should begin
with a complete medical his-
tory and thorough physical
examination. Initial testing
may include: measurement of
water intake at home, com-
plete blood count (CBC),
blood chemistry tests (includ-
ing electrolytes), urinalysis,
urine culture and sensitivity,
thyroid hormone (T4) con-
centration and abdominal x-
rays or ultrasound.
In older cats, the three
most common disease condi-
tions seen in practice that
cause polyuria and polydipsia
are kidney failure, diabetes
mellitus and hyperthyroidism.
Diabetes mellitus diag-
nosis is based on high blood
glucose concentration and
the presence of glucose, and
often incompletely broken
down fat products called ke-
tones in the urine. This dis-
ease is very treatable long
term. Initial treatment de-
pends on the severity and
may include hospitalization
with intensive fluid and elec-
trolyte therapy in conjunc-
tion with administration of
short-acting insulin or outpa-
tient management with long-
acting insulin.
Kidney insufficiency or
failures diagnosis is based on
serum biochemistry tests and
urinalysis. Treatment is based
on rehydrating the cat, trying
to slow the progression of the
kidney disease by dietary
modification and treating
complications such as hyper-
tension, nausea
and urinary tract
infection.
Hy p e r t hy -
roidisms diagno-
sis is based on
measurement of
thyroid hormone
concentration via
bloodwork. Diffi-
cult cases may require special-
ized blood tests or imaging.
Treatment consists of drug
therapy or radiation or less
commonly surgery. This dis-
ease is also very treatable long
term. Treatment with ra-
dioactive iodine (I-131)
will require referral to a spe-
cialty clinic or teaching insti-
tution in your area.
Optimal treatment of
any persistent medical condi-
tion depends on establishing
the correct diagnosis. The
symptom group polyuria and
polydipsia has many different
potential causes, and it is im-
portant to identify the under-
lying cause before beginning
treatment. Please visit your
veterinarian as soon as you
notice any changes because
with an early diagnosis you
often get a better outcome.

effrey B. Wise, M.D.,
F.A.C.S., double board-cer-
tified Facial Plastic and Re-
constructive surgeon, is proud
to announce the Wise Signa-
ture Lift. The Wise Lift is a cul-
mination of Dr. Wises extensive
experience in facial rejuvena-
tion. Having performed over
3,500 facial rejuvenation and
eyelid procedures, he focuses ex-
clusively on plastic surgery of
the face.
Dr. Wise underwent his
training at some of our countrys
finest institutions, specifically
Yale, Cornell and the Univer-
sity of Pennsylvania. He shares
his expertise at the New York
University School of Medicine,
where he teaches Facial Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery.
His artistry, compassion, and ex-
ceptional skills led to his being
named one of Americas Top
Physicians by the Consumers
Research Council of America.
Based on Dr. Wises vast
knowledge and experience, the
Wise Signature Lift was devel-
oped to address facial rejuvena-
tion with a global approach.
The multiple rapid recovery
procedures work together to
give overall cosmetic improve-
ment. Dr. Wise leaves his pa-
tients looking natural, refreshed
and healthy, without the tell-
tale signs of surgery.
The Wise Lift is comprised
of multiple procedures includ-
ing face-lifting, fat transfer, frac-
tionated CO2 laser skin
resurfacing, and upper and
lower eyelid procedures (ble-
pharoplasty). When performed
concurrently, these procedures
target the primary symptoms of
an aging face: loose skin, fine
lines and wrinkles, brown spots,
fatty deposits and loose skin
around the eyes, and lost vol-
ume in the cheeks and folds.
Dr. Wises specialized
facelift technique tightens the
skin in the neck and lower face
by suspending the sagging mus-
cles and fascia to obtain a long
lasting correction. Incisions are
tiny with his cutting-edge pro-
cedure and strategically placed
in creases and folds. All of the
above promotes a natural,
youthful profile to the jaw line
and neck.
After tightening the loose
tissues in the jaw line, jowls, and
neck, the skin is rejuvenated
with Dr. Wises state of the art
fractionated CO2 laser. The
CO2 laser resurfaces the skins
fine lines and wrinkles and
brown spots, while allowing for
deeper skin penetration, less
pain and optimal results.
Facial plastic surgeons
have long recognized the impor-
tance of volume enhancement
to restore a rested and youthful
look. Dr. Wise finds fat to be
the ideal non-allergic soft tissue
filler, in comparison to conven-
tional dermal fillers. By replen-
ishing lost volume in the folds
and cheeks, the young architec-
ture of the face is rediscovered
with long-lasting, natural re-
sults.
Dr. Wises comprehensive
approach includes rejuvenation
of the eyes, where the signs of
the aging process begin. Dr.
Wises precise upper and lower
eyelid procedures eliminate
extra skin and correct puffy
bags. Most importantly, a natu-
ral look is achieved that does
not compromise the shape or
original beauty of the eye.
The ultimate in facial reju-
venation, the Wise Signature
Lift is a multi-faceted compre-
hensive technique developed
and performed exclusively for
the patients of Dr. Wise. He has

s one of the most com-
monly injured struc-
tures in the knee, the
meniscus is unique because of its
blood supply. For both the me-
dial and lateral menisci, the
blood supply is from the outside
in. The closer to the center of
the knee, the less of a blood sup-
ply there is to the meniscus.
From the treatment and healing
point of view, the blood supply
anatomy is critical. The outer
one third of the meniscus has a
good blood supply where heal-
ing can occur, while the inner
two thirds has a poor blood sup-
ply where healing almost never
occurs. In orthopedic surgery
textbooks, we call the outer
one-third the red zone, and the
inner two-thirds the white zone.

heal on their own, tears of the
meniscus in the inner two-
thirds have a very difficult time
healing back because of the
poor blood supply. Especially in
patients who have complex
tears, or tears that have multi-
ple little tears in the region, pa-
tients are often fighting a losing
battle as they wait for healing to
occur. Although we typically
try a course of physical therapy
in patients with meniscus tears
before considering surgery, we
always advise patients that they
may feel less pain but meniscus
tears often remain. Further-
more, these tears may get bigger
over time, and may cause adja-
cent cartilage damage with its
unstable or irregular torn sur-
face.
The surgical treatment of
meniscus tears is performed
arthroscopically, or with mini-
mally invasive technique. The
two most common procedures
are repair and partial resection.
Meniscus transplanta-
tions are performed in the
rare patients who meet
the strict criteria. Only
patients who have tears
in the outer one third of
the meniscus are candi-
dates for a meniscal re-
pair. In the nineties, the
orthopedic community
tried repairs in the inner
two thirds with low success
rates. The poor blood supply in
the inner two thirds meant that,
despite a strong repair construct,
the tear did not heal back. Sec-
ond operations were often
needed, and there were a lot of
grumpy patients.
There are different menis-
cal repair techniques out there,
but among the most common is
the suture technique. We
arthoscopically introduce a su-
ture with tiny plastic hooks on
their ends. The plastic hooks
capture the capsule tissue be-
hind the meniscus and the su-
ture is then tied down to repair
the tear. Especially for tears
that are 1 cm or less, the suture
repair technique has reliable

success rates. For larger tears,
such as bucket handle tears, the
success rates drop and we are
more hesitant to do a repair in
these patients.
More commonly, pa-
tients often have tears in the
inner two thirds of the menis-
cus, or the white zone. These
patients are treated with a
partial resection. Using a mo-
torized shaver, we resect out
the damaged meniscus tissue,
while leaving the healthy rim
component. Its a fine bal-
ancing act between trying to
preserve as much meniscus
tissue as possible while creat-
ing a smooth remaining sur-
face to prevent further menis-
cus tears.
After surgery, we mini-
mize the meniscus repair pa-
tients from zero to 90 degrees
of knee bending, 6 weeks after
surgery. For the meniscus
partial resection patients, we
dont have any strong restric-
tions after surgery except to
avoid going too wild. Some
of my West Milford patients
have gone back to their con-
struction jobs the day after or
gone motorcycling that week-
end. But the West Milford
patients are a hearty bunch
with excellent genetics.

ver time a pet that is
routinely using a
patch of grass as his
personal potty will damage
that stretch of lawn. The be-
havior of canines plus the
chemical components of the
urine contribute to the brown,
dead patches synonymous with
dog waste. But there are ways
to mitigate the problem.
Dog urine and feces can
often be a frustrating problem,
even to pet-lovers. The war be-
tween wanting a pristine lawn
and a healthy pet can drive pet
owners to investigate ways to
prevent or reduce marring of
the lawn. Do those urban leg-
ends like tomato juice or bak-
ing soda work? In most cases,
no, however, there are ways to
reduce the amount of lawn
damage with other methods.
Dog waste chemistry
Understanding why urine
and feces can affect your lawn
requires understanding the
makeup of these waste prod-
ucts. The fundamental prob-
lem involves the concentra-
tion of nitrogen in the solid
and liquid waste. Primarily in
dogs, the kidneys serve to re-
move excess nitrogen from the
dogs high-protein, meat-based
diet. In small concentrations,
nitrogen applied to a lawn can
actually serve as a fertilizer
helping the lawn to be green
and bright. But its the higher
concentrations that do the
most damage. These essen-
tially burn out the grass and
cause brown, bare patches that

Beautiful lawn vs. faithful pet;
Putting a stop to lawn care woes
Its possible to be a lawn-lover and a dog-lover

can be rather unsightly.
A few decades ago, Dr.
A.W. Allard, a Colorado vet-
erinarian, examined numerous
variations in dog urine and the
effects on several common
lawn grasses. He found fescue
to be the most nitrogen-resist-
ant. Yet, even that grass has its
saturation point and can
brown.
Who is the biggest offender?
Dog owners sometimes
think that female dogs have
different urine chemistry be-
cause they tend to do the most
damage to the lawn. The fact
is, both male and female dogs
can do damage, it just comes
down to the way urine is ap-
plied. Male dogs oftentimes
mark their territories or spray
a small amount of urine to dif-
ferent parts of the landscape.
These small concentrations
may not damage the lawn
much. However, a female dog
tends to squat and apply the
urine in one spot at a high
concentration. That liquid
seeps into the lawn and can do
damage. Male dogs that do not
lift their legs and prefer to
squat can do the same level of
damage as females.
Cats that use the out-
doors instead of a litter box
may also create brown spots,
particularly if they visit the
same spot over and over.
Fixing the problem
Apart from diluting the
urine, which can cause its own
issues, the best way to alleviate
brown spots is to walk the dog
around the neighborhood to
other appropriate spots. Other-
wise, a dog-only area can be set
up in the yard. Then pet own-
ers must train their dogs to use
that specific area. Laying down
pea gravel or mulch can be a
way to absorb the urine with-
out having it damage the lawn.
Camouflage, like bushes or a
fence, can set the dog area
apart from the rest of the back-
yard as well.
It can take up to two
weeks or more to train an older
dog to take to the new potty
area. Puppies may adapt a lit-
tle faster. Collecting urine and
feces and placing it in the dogs
area can help set up a scent
mark that may make it easier
for dogs to learn thats where
theyre supposed to go. For the
training period, pet owners
should accompany their dogs
to the new area on a leash; do
not leave the pet unattended
in the yard. He or she may re-
vert back to the normal spot
being used for relief.
With time and patience,
pet-lovers can cohabitate with
their pooches and still enjoy a
nice lawn. It just takes a little
creative thinking and training

Whether repairing a cab-

building or installing cabi-

room, DIYers will likely be
drilling, driving, cutting, and
possibly joining wood. A Fes-
tool CXS Lithium-Ion 10.8V
Cordless Drill Multi-Chuck
Set can handle all these
drilling and driving chal-
lenges, from maneuvering in
tight spaces to installing cab-
inets. A belt clip keeps the
lightweight (2 lb.) drill/driver
handy, and an ultra-bright
LED light illuminates dark
corners. The Rockwell
BladeRunner is a multipur-
pose, precision cutter that
uses any T-shank jigsaw blade
and can easily cut wood,
metal, ceramic tile, alu-

it attached to the wall or on a
bench top. Put wood together
effortlessly with the Kreg Jig

materials from 1/2 to 11/2
thick in 1/8 increments. The

ith so many people
looking for alterna-
tives to costly holi-
day fare, newspapers, magazines
and online cooking
sites are overflowing
with great ideas. But
the key to hosting a
successful seasonal
meal is not simply
finding interesting
recipes and purchasing
lower-cost foods, but
in creating and organ-
izing a menu that
works from start to finish. The
easiest way to do that, make a
plan and stick to it.
Share the cooking and the
cost. Rising food costs and
tighter budgets have prompted
many people to host potluck
holiday dinners. As the host,
you might prepare the main
dish and have your guests fill in
the rest of the menu. Either ask
participants to contribute their
signature salad, side dish or
dessert, or plan a meal along a
particular theme and give guests
choices from among a list of
menu items.
Simplify. There is no rule
stating that holiday dinners
have to be fancy, so dont be
afraid to plan a menu that has
fewer and less costly compo-
nents. For example, serve a
hearty and flavorful turkey stew
or soup in place of a more ex-
pensive roasted turkey. Pair it
with a simple salad and loaves
of crusty bread, and then finish
up with homemade apple cob-
bler. Your guests will leave
happy and well nourished, and
you will have served up a flavor-
ful and frugal holiday feast.
Cook and freeze. Another op-
tion is to build your menu
around a few dishes that can be
prepared ahead and frozen.
Cooking ahead saves money by
spreading out food ex-
penditures and avoiding
last-minute shopping,
which often leads to
spending more money.
Go meatless. Vege-
tarian dishes can be far
less expensive, espe-
cially when feeding a
crowd. Consider replac-
ing the turkey or roast
with a pasta or risotto dish,
roasted vegetable tart or veggie
lasagna. Great sources of vege-
tarian recipes include vegk-
itchen.com, epicurious.com,
vegetariantimes.com, and all-
recipes.com.
Go ethnic. While tradi-
tion tends to rule at Thanksgiv-
ing, Christmas and New Years
menus are wide open. How
about a Mexican fiesta or an
Italian feast? With a large pan of
enchiladas or a big bowl of
spaghetti and meatballs, its easy
to feed a crowd and stay on
budget.
Stick to homemade. As a
rule, anything you make at
home will cost less and likely
tastes better than prepared
foods from the grocery store or
a restaurant. If you stick with
simple recipes that dont require
an array of exotic ingredients,
your homemade holiday meal
will hit the spot and you wont
hit the ceiling when you add up
the food bill.

Ideas abound for budget-friendly holiday meals
Y
ou are probably won-
dering, how is it possi-
ble to determine my
cost before I know which
schools my student will apply
to or ultimately attend. For
the most part, it does not
matter which school. What
matters is what you will be
expected to pay in the form of
your Expected Family Contri-
bution (EFC) and the pro-
jected unmet need. Just as
important, you need to know
your familys ability to pay the
EFC, which will be the ab-
solute minimum out of pocket
regardless of which school
your student attends. Since
schools differ in the amount
of aid they can provide, your
cost will definitely be your
EFC; and in most cases, some
unmet need. How much
Need Based Aid you will be
eligible for is determined by
subtracting your EFC from
the Cost of Attendance at the
school. Remember, your EFC
remains constant. These ex-
amples will illustrate the
point.
School A: Cost of Atten-
dance $30,000 less EFC of
$30,000 equals $0 Need.
School B: Cost of Atten-
dance $40,000 less EFC of
$30,000 equals $10,000 Need.
Your need is what you are eli-
gible for, not necessarily what
you will receive.
Let me better explain.
In the college planning and
financial aid world, every
family will have an Expected
Family Contribution (EFC),
based on financial aid formu-
las. Be prepared, because this
number usually results in
shock or tears of disbelief
when families learn what
their EFC will be. It is not
worth arguing or debating

Determine your cost for college before looking at schools By Chuck Drawbaugh
continued on next page
whether the formulas are cor-
rect or fair. Parents often
laugh or panic when we tell
them their EFC and com-
monly say, How do they ex-
pect us to come up with that
kind of money?
The point is: you need
to know your EFC, and real-
ize it will be the same regard-
less of the school; so why wait
to find out and further delay
planning. The only way to
pay less than your EFC is if
your student goes to a school
that cost less than your EFC;
for example, a community
college. Once you determine
your EFC, it is time to deter-
mine how you will pay that
amount, regardless of the
school. Need based aid is
meant to help cover your fi-
nancial need, not your EFC.
Therefore, you will pay your
EFC from either, savings, in-
vestments, your income, or by
borrowing. Many families do
not have enough savings to
cover their EFC for the first
year, let alone four or more
years. Therefore, most fami-
lies will be borrowing to cover
a portion of their EFC.
Once you determine
how much you are expected
to pay (your EFC and unmet
need), it is important to de-
termine how much you can
pay, or more importantly how
much you should pay. It is
crucial to determine how
much you should pay early
on, because if you dont, you
could paint yourself into a
corner financially. You
should know how much you
may have to borrow and what
that means in monthly pay-
ments. If you have found it
difficult to set aside money
each month leading up to col-
lege, what will change to
make money available to
make the monthly payments
on college loans? It is very
important to know the an-
swer to this. If things are that

Determine your cost for college before looking at schools
continued from previous page
continued on page 24
tight, the answer should not
be deferring all payments on
all loans until after college is
completed. That just might
be a temporary deferment re-
sulting in a much bigger prob-
lem. By deferring, the
payments will be larger, so
you must be comfortable with
the students future career di-
rection and earning potential
to cover the larger payments.
Assessing the various loan op-
tions is a topic in itself.
Back to determining
how much you (specifically
the parents) should pay.
While it is a noble and pre-
ferred goal for most parents to
cover the majority of college
for their children, you must
determine in advance the im-
pact your college contribu-
tions will have on your own
retirement. The reality is
that most parents may have
fifteen to twenty years left of
high earnings potential, once
their children are out of col-
lege. If you continue to pay
off loans for college expenses
after your student has gradu-
ated, your time frame to bol-
ster your retirement becomes
even shorter. In addition,
should a parent get laid off or
is ever disabled for any period
of time, both college and re-
tirement may take a hit.
Before committing to a
contribution amount, parents
should do a detailed analysis
of what their retirement pic-
ture might look like, based on
their efforts to date and rea-
sonable projections into the
future. Many people fall prey
to seeing large dollar amounts
in their retirement plans and
thinking they will be fine
when their retirement day ar-
rives. Take the time to con-
firm what will probably be,
and dont rely on what you
think will be in retirement. If
you are not comfortable with
your retirement picture, you
may have to reduce your con-
tributions toward college.
The bottom line is that your
student will have their entire
working lifetime to address
loans, while you may have a
limited window to pay down
mortgages and bolster your re-
tirement before going on a
fixed income. Just remember,
at the time you might be run-
ning short of money in your
retirement, your children who
you have kindly helped
through college may be strug-
gling financially as they are
raising their own families.
Therefore, you cannot neces-
sarily count on them to pay
you back later in life.
In summary, families
need to determine their EFC
and their ability to pay as
early as possible. Determin-
ing this in an eleventh hour
reactionary mode typically
does not work out in anyones
favor. In essence, paying for
college may not be just a col-
lege problem; dont let it be-
come a retirement problem as
well.

panostomy tube surgery and
found less than half of these
surgeries were appropriate.
Clearly, chronic or re-
current otitis media is a seri-
ous health problem for which
traditional medicine has lim-
ited answers. Faced with this
realization, many parents seek
alternative methods of treat-
ment, including chiropractic.
Indeed, drugless, non-surgical
treatment has great appeal,
and a growing body of re-
search is showing chiropractic
care can play an important
role in helping children with
chronic otitis media.
For example, a recent
paper published in Chiroprac-
tic Pediatrics documents four
cases of chronic otitis media
treated with chiropractic
care. The four patients de-
scribed range from 14 months
to seven years of age. Each
had chronic or recurrent oti-
tis media (usually with sinus
infections) ranging from one
to seven years. One patient
had 60% hearing loss in one
ear, and surgery was advo-
cated by the pediatrician. All
four patients had undergone
multiple regimen of antibi-
otics. Chiropractic examina-
tion revealed postural
distortions and evidence of
abnormal spinal alignment
and movement (subluxa-
tion), primarily in the cervi-
cal region.
Treatment was adminis-
tered to correct the postural
faults and improve spinal
function in the areas of sub-
luxation. At the time of the
report, all four patients had
been free of otitis media for
periods ranging from five
months to four years without
antibiotics or surgery. These
outcomes were verified by
parental reports, medical ex-
aminations, school atten-
dance data and hearing tests.
How can chiropractic
help chronic ear infections?
Many cases of recurrent otitis
media are thought to be the
result of blockage or restric-
tion of the small lymphatic
chains that drain fluid from
the middle ear. This blockage
forces fluid to build up in the
middle ear, creating an invit-
ing environment for bacteria
and viruses. The restriction
in fluid drainage is caused by
increased tension in the mus-
cles overlying the already
small lymphatic drainage sys-
tem in children. Research
has demonstrated that spinal
joint function effects muscle
tone. Therefore, abnormal
movement of the joints in the
neck or incorrect spinal posi-
tion may be responsible for
tightening the neck muscles,
restricting lymphatic drain-
age.
The fundamental goal of
chiropractic care is to restore
and maintain optimum spinal
function, meaning correct
spinal position and joint
movement. When a chiro-
practor evaluates a child suf-
fering from chronic otitis
media or any other health
complaint, posture, spinal po-
sition and motion, and mus-
cle tone and function are
thoroughly assessed. If abnor-
malities are detected, the chi-
ropractor may use gentle
spinal adjustments and mus-
cle release techniques to help
restore normal spinal and
muscle function, enabling
proper lymphatic drainage to
resume. So when your child
suffers from recurring inner
ear infections that do not re-
spond satisfactorily to med-
ical care, think laterally!
Alternative approaches may
provide the solutions you are
looking for.

patient care and overall treat-
ment outcome. If you have

A
s a New York & New Jersey Double
Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, I
see people from all over the world who
desire a tighter neck and jaw line. A more sculpted
appearance to the neck and jaw line is a common
desire from both men and women from around the
globe and this is a trait that equates to beauty in
every culture.

The new K- Lift

procedure allows us to create

a very defined cervico-mental angle which is the
region where the neck meets the face. This line is
typically very well defined in
the most attractive people.
The necklift procedure
typically included liposuc-
tion to reduce the excess fat
in the neck and a platys-
maplasty which tightens the
loose muscles in the
neck. This combina-
tion of procedures
has been very suc-
cessful in the past.
We now have the
option to include
the placement
of specialized
sutures, which
allow us to
create far more
definition then
we have ever
been able to
in the past.
This proce-
dure takes
about 1 hour to perform and has a downtime of
about 7 days with minimal to no pain. This
procedure requires a very small imperceptible
incision under the chin and in the crease behind
each ear.
The K-Lift

is the ideal procedure for

someone who wishes to have more definition to
their neck and jaw line who does not have a lot
of excess skin. The presence of excess skin
usually requires some form of facelift procedure
to reduce the excess skin burden. Some people
lack neck definition based on extra fat alone and
these people can be corrected with lipo-suction.
Some people lack definition based on extra
skin and these people require removal of that
extra skin with some form of facelift procedure.
Some people lack definition of their neck based
on loose muscles in the neck and these people
require a platysmaplasty procedure. Most people
have a combination of these factors contributing
to their lack of neck definition and these people
require some if not all of the above mentioned
procedures for correction.
The sutures allow us to create good neck and
jaw line definition in people who have unfavor-
able anatomy, either from the structure of their
trachea (windpipe) pushing forward on the neck
or the muscles of the floor of mouth and tongue,
pushing down under the chin. Previously, people
with unfavorable anatomy were asked to expect
minimal improvement in their neck and jaw line
from the older surgical techniques, but as our
facelift and necklift procedures improve and
technology, such as the sutures, improves, these
same people can now expect very striking results
that were unachievable in the past.
