Drama Update!
So a lot of you dont exactly know whats happening with Drama. Being an insider in the Drama World, I think of myself as the perfect person on the Journalism staff to inform you of whats going on. Drama can be a great escape from all the troubles of every day life: spending time with your friends, letting loose in acting, or expressing yourself in song. But it also can be a lot of work. For those who participate in the spring musicals, the audition process is a bit longer. Because it is a smaller crowd and there are more main parts, the audition process usually takes about a week. After parts are received, the practices begin. The Drama Class had their OneAct Play competition last Tuesday, and it was definitely a lot of stress on the teacher, Mrs. Stembridge, as well as a lot of the actors, including myself. This year's One Act Play was a true team! Working together to pull out an amazing Superior rating from 2 of the judges receive and an Excellent rating from the third judge. The acting, costumes, and set were flawless during their performance. The entire cast was spectacular! I couldn't be more proud of them! The play, altogether, though marvelous as an ending product, was a grueling process. For the One- Act Play competition, there is a time limit of 55 minutes. The Wednesday before the competition we were 15 minutes over. You may see how that could be stressful. We ended up being a minute and a half over our allotted time, which the main judge said was the reason we did not win 1st prize. As you may have heard, our auditions for our spring musical Annie were last Saturday. Parts will be an-

nounced November 4th, and if you didnt try out, make sure to see it in spring! Drama is definitely a fun class if you like being loud and expressing yourself. I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves being outgoing.

Facebooks New Additions Remain
When Facebook launched a line of content onto its social networking site last month, there was a massive amount of negative response toward it. Users were upset about the changes, people could not figure out how to use certain things, and most people liked it better the way it was. A majority of Facebook users just want a user-friendly environment to interact with friends, but that was seriously disrupted by the technical advancements made to the site. Not all people dislike the new changes, but most people just dont understand how to use the new features or choose not to learn them. Facebook attracts many different types of people: elders, teens, adults, and the list goes on. For some of the not-so-young users, for instance actress Joy Behar, the new changes can be a hassle. Joy Behar disliked the new changes and said it took her hours to figure out where everything went on Facebook and it cut into her Solitaire time. Facebook has also improved its privacy settings as well. USA TODAY published a telephone survey of more than 2,000 adults. Only 26% of respondents who use Facebook daily said that they were very concerned about privacy, compared with 35% who use Facebook once a week, and 39% who use the site less often. Only 34% of the poll respondents who use Facebook were aware of the new changes. Not shockingly, 87% of respondents who use Facebook on a daily basis noticed the additions. Of Facebook users who have acknowledged the new features, 56% said they dislike them and 36% say they like them. Do people just not like change? The reality of it is when people get so immersed in and attached to an environment, they get used to it. Facebook has been practically unchanged for a good while, that is until last month. People feel animosity towards the social networking site for changing almost the whole experience. An array of good features is nice, but there is nothing like getting back to the basics. Here is what some of the students had to say when we asked them if they liked the new changes: Haley Steverson -The new one is

Josh Garland- No, it was perfectly fine the way it was.

Avery EdwardsNo, it is complicated.

Socks or No Socks?
In previous years, female students at SCPS have been allowed to wear tights or leggings with socks over them. However, a new rule has been put into place this year that bans girls from wearing socks over their tights. This new rule upsets the girls of Savannah Christian because the tights do not keep our legs as warm without the socks. Also, the reason behind the ban on the socks is invalid. They changed the rule because they felt the socks over the tights did not look good. The girls are not wearing the socks to make a fashion statement, but to keep their legs warm.

Samantha Simmons
Here are some of the students feelings on the no-socks-over-tights rule: Most girls dont care how it looks, we are just trying to keep our legs warm. Just tights is not as warm as with the socks. -Veronica Woodberry What is the purpose of taking away socks? Is there a valid reason behind it? -Jordan Smith :I think that with our Wallabees, the tights make us look like elves.

Heres Your Chance to be a H.E.R.O.
Georgia. Georgia is sixth in the nations ranking for children and teens cases of AIDS, and has the fifth highest number of adults with AIDS cases in the c o u n t r y . Children affected by the AIDS/HIV disease face many negative effects including depression, low self-esteem, anger issues, and lower academic standards. Many children affected are also discriminated against and are forced to watch loved ones die from the disease. In order to counteract these negative effects, H.E.R.O developed different programs to help these children improve the quality of their lives and feel better about themselves. Some of the programs include The Rising HERO Life Skills Program, which is dedicated to help develop the life skills necessary for the children to overcome these challenges;

H.E.R.O., an acronym for Hearts Reaching Out for Children, Inc., is an organization founded by Ryan Gembala and Garret Gravesen. According to their web page, H.E.R.O. for Children is a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Ryan and Garrett wanted to use their international experience working alongside of children with HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Brazil to form an organization similar children in their home state of

Camp High Five, allows children to engage in a wide range of recreational activities they may not otherwise be able to experience. Last but not least, Holiday of HEROes, where HERO joins with other AIDS organization to get the children on gift they need and one gift they want. Youre likely familiar with (RED) products, whose proceeds are directed to AIDS relief in Africa. Buying (RED) products is an easy way to help (RED) reach its goal of an AIDS-free generation in Africa beginning 2015. Lets think and act locally, too. Why not volunteer and help children affected by this disease right here in Georgia? A Christian college is much more intentional in integrating faith and learning in every aspect of the educational experience. -Chaston Hart is a freshman at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Thanks for visiting, Chaston! Chase Mouchet, pictured right, graduated from SCPS in 2005, and has returned to Savannah since graduating from The University of Georgia in 2009. Having been very active with HERO while in Athens, Mr. Mouchet has helped start the Savannah chapter of HERO. Recently, he contacted fellow Raider and Dawg Matt Parrish, who is our Director for Institutional Advancement. Mr. Mouchet has asked for SCPS students to consider volunteering for this worthwhile organization.

How Much of an Impact?
We elect student government representatives every year, but it seems like it has become a mindless annual task. Usually there is little to no opposition for the spots being filled, and every candidate should be trying to do more to better the school than merely pad their everexpanding college resumes. The elected officials may organize a fundraiser here or there, but honestly, as a regular student I do not see much of an impact. I think it is time for a change or maybe just a shakeup. This problem not only includes the students but also the administration, because in order for students to make a difference, we have to actually be allowed to set in place a democratic student government. So if we just elect people and nothing happens, thats not necessarily the students or the people holding the offices fault. First and foremost, the masses of the student body need to be inspired and motivated to vote, but to be com-

them and us is a mere title. Officials though are often helpless when it comes to actually getting something changed, but they should at least try. Maybe fight for a difference in our school; that is oddly enough what they were elected to do. Id like to see a difference this year but truly there wont be any change unless we the people set it in motion and voice our opinions. Im not saying we need to congregate and stage protests, but some of our administrators actually enjoy constructive criticism, so lets give some. We the students would like to know what we have the power to vote for and maybe effect the outcome of. Administrators, faculty, and elected officials, your opinion would be immensely helpful, and readers, your input on this topic would be much appreciated as well. If anyone cares to provide any feedback to The Red and White on this issue, email your comments to Mrs. Shepherd or any Journalism staff member, and we will respond to some of the comments in the next issue.

pletely blunt, nobody really cares. Candidates running for office should stand for something and show that they actually might make a difference in the day-to-day lives of students. Standing for something or working toward a change will engage the students interest and make them carefully consider their election options. If students had the power to have a say in, for example, dress code or meals at lunch they will want to get involved. At this point in the year, it seems that nothing has been or will be done this year besides the boring, fundraisers. Dont get me wrong -those are great and help people in need, but elected students shouldnt be satisfied with this since the only difference between

A Senior Sounds Off!

I have learned so much from being a student-athlete during my years at SCPS. The most important thing that comes to mind is trust. Throughout the four years I have learned to trust everyone that has been on the softball team. I not only trust teammates to complete their assignments on each play, but I also trust them off the field as well. When I am having a bad day I trust the girls to keep it to themselves. I trust the girls when they come and talk to me and say everything will be okay, you will get better, and its just not your day. I have trust in the girls that whatever happens on the field will stay on the field, and not go out to the whole school. I have learned from being a student athlete that time goes by fast, so be sure to enjoy it. Throughout my four years of playing softball, I was always ready for the busy schedule to be over with at the end of the season. It took up so much of my time that I lost time hanging out and studying. But the positive thing about being an athlete is that you have a set schedule each day that does not change. I wake up, go to school, go to softball, go home, do homework, and then go to bed. Each day follows the same pattern, and it has helped because now I know how much time to spend on each subject. Now that I go home right after school, plus being an early-out student, I realize how much I miss it all and it has only been a couple of weeks. I love the sport and I love the team that softball had this year, and the sad thing is, I am never going to play on the same team with the other thirteen girls. I have learned that hard work pays off in the end. When I was a freshman and I worked much harder than other players, I earned the right to play over upperclassmen. The coaches always said that they couldnt emphasize enough that you dont have to be a senior or a junior to be able to play. They told us that whoever is the best at the position and whoever gives it all they have will play. Because I have always loved the sport, I gave it all I had, and now as a senior I can proudly say that I played and lettered all four years. With the team that we have this year, it was difficult for the coaches to make up the roster because everyone

Veronica Woodberry
was so good at her position or anywhere she was put on the field. The infield cant do much with out the outfield because we back them up, and the outfield cant do much without the infield because they back us up when we are about to make a play in the infield. There are many colleges that know about the Savannah Christian Lady Raiders because the colleges want girls who are athletic and give it their best, and this team has it all. I could not be prouder to be a Lady Raider, and I wish the team the best of luck in the future.

Forty-seven percent of Americans couldn't name any candidate for the 2012 GOP nomination.

In a little over a year from now, Americans 18 and older will elect the president to serve our country for the next term. While no one currently is challenging Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, there are eight established contenders for the Republican nomination. As we get closer to November 2012, The Red and White will take a closer look at the nominees from the Republican and Democratic parties as well as independents and nominees from various third parties. Future Red and White surveys will ask students to match candidates with their platforms, so plan on paying attention to political news. Why bother vote if you dont know why youre voting for your chosen candidate? In a highly unscientific survey, about half of the senior class tried to match the faces of the candidates with their names. Less than ten percent of students surveyed were able to match all of the names and faces correctly. However, over seventy percent were able to correctly identify three of the most discussed potential nominees: Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, and Mitt Romney. According to a Pew Research Center poll taken from September 29th through October 2nd, forty-seven percent of Americans couldnt name any candidate for the 2012 GOP nomination. Some students in senior homerooms, Mr. Edenfields Current Issues class, and Mrs. Shepherds Advanced English 10 class took a few minutes to weigh in on these potential Republican nominees and the debates in general. Read on to see what these Raiders are thinking. Have you watched any of the debates? Why or why not? Students were split here 50/50. Students who had not watched any of the debates stated that they were not interested or did not have the time, especially due to balancing homework with other commitments. Of the students who had watched the debates, several watched because Coach Wood made [me] for AP Government or because It is important, and I want to make an educated decision when I vote. Do you have an opinion of any of these candidates that you would like to share with the readers of The Red and White? I believe Rick Perry is an unrealistic candidate running because he is so conservative that he wouldnt be a good nominee. I believe it will come down to Cain and Romney. Cains 9-9-9 plan is the big emphasis in his campaign, however, (continued on p. 7)

Potential Republican Nominees, continued

(continued from page 6) economists are having trouble piecing it together. Out of the two I believe Romney would be the best candidate to take out Obama. Guy Minick, senior Herman Cain is a businessman, and a very good one at that. In this economic climate, the last thing America needs is another Washington spinster dedicated to pleasing only their lobbyists and donors. America needs Cains fiscal policies to get the economy back on track. -Lee Howard, senior What is Mitt Romney doing playing dress-up as a Republican? Romney Care? Really? And youre still running as a Republican? At this point, why even bother running for the GOP?John Lane, sophomore Cain is an excellent candidate. He is deeply rooted in his beliefs and seems to be partial to the Christian standpoint. Perry is also a candidate of interest for Christian conservatives. He is a true conservative Republican. Both candidates are very conservative and have well structured plans to turn the economy around.Josiah Van Puffelen, sophomore I am conservative and will probably vote for Cain, but all of these candidates are boring. Also, Gingrich is always frowning.Matt Moore, senior
