polynomials up to degree 3.

1. Important Identities
a 2 − b 2 = (a + b)(a − b)
(a + b) 2 = a 2 + 2ab + b 2
(a − b) 2 = a 2 − 2ab + b 2

a 3 + b 3 = (a + b)(a 2 − ab + b 2 )
a 3 − b 3 = (a − b)(a 2 + ab + b 2 )

2. Remainder Theorem
When a polynomial f (x) is divided by x − a , the remainder is equal to f (a) .

3. Factor Theorem
If f (x) is a polynomial and f (a ) = 0 , then x − a is a factor of f (x) .

4. Long Divisions
8x2 − 2x − 3
e.g. Divide 8x3 – 26x2 + 3x + 9 by x – 3 x − 3 8 x 3 − 26 x 2 + 3 x + 9
3 2
∴ 8x – 26x + 3x + 9
8 x 3 − 24 x 2
= ( x − 3)(8 x 2 − 2 x − 3) − 2 x 2 + 3x
= ( x − 3)(2 x + 1)(4 x − 3) − 2x2 + 6x
− 3x + 9
− 3x + 9
