Geography: Kentucky Data Collected: 10/28/2011 - 11/01/2011 Release Date: 11/02/2011 Sponsor: The Courier-Journal Bluegrass / WHAS-TV Poll, (Louisville, KY)

Republican Williams in KY Governor Race Never Gets Traction, Ends Where he Started, Far Back of Democrat Beshear: Hours before votes are counted in the election for Governor of Kentucky, incumbent Democrat Steve Beshear remains where he has been all Summer and Fall, in command, and poised for comfortable re-election, according to a SurveyUSA pre-election poll conducted for the Courier-Journal newspaper and WHAS-TV in Louisville. In 3 SurveyUSA tracking polls over 90 days, Republican David Williams never polled above 29%, and Beshear never polled below 52%. Independent Gatewood Galbraith ends where he started, at 9%. SurveyUSA's interactive tracking graphs show the lack of movement in the race. Williams has majority support among Republicans and among Tea Party members, but that's it. He trails by 13 among men, by 23 among whites and by 35 among women. Beshear leads by 17 points in North Central KY, by 18 points in Western KY, 31 points in Eastern KY and by 36 points in Greater Louisville. Beshear gets 56% of lower-income votes, 54% of middle-income votes and 53% of upper-income votes. Williams has never led among pro-life voters, never led among gun owners, never led among those who go to church regularly, all groups typically friendly to a Republican candidate. 28% of Republicans cross-over to vote for the Democrat. By contrast, just 12% of Democrats cross-over to vote for the Republican. Williams ends with a Minus 17 Favorability rating. Beshear ends with a Plus 18 Favorability rating. This survey includes cell phone respondents and landline respondents. SurveyUSA interviewed 900 Kentucky adults 10/28/11 through 11/01/11. Of the adults, 785 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 576 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 11/08/11 Gubernatorial election. This survey was conducted multimode. Landline respondents (who are 75% of adults, 79% of likely voters), were interviewed in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Cell phone respondents (who are 25% of adults, 21% of likely voters), were interviewed by call center employees, who hand-dialed the phone numbers, asked the questions, and who remained on the line until the interview was completed. In this data set, cell-phone respondents and landline respondents vote similarly.

** Too few respondents of this type were interviewed for this data to be meaningful. Statement of Methodology: About the Poll: This poll was conducted by telephone in the voice of a professional announcer. Respondent households were selected at random, using Random Digit Dialed (RDD) sample provided by Survey Sampling, of Fairfield CT. All respondents heard the questions asked identically. The pollster's report includes the geography that was surveyed; the date(s) interviews were conducted, the number of respondents who answered each question and the theoretical margin of sampling error for each question. Where necessary, respondents were weighted using the most recent US Census estimates for age, gender, ethnic origin and region, to align the sample to the population. In theory, one can say with 95% certainty that the results would not vary by more than the stated margin of sampling error, in one direction or the other, had the entire universe of respondents with home telephones been interviewed with complete accuracy. There are other possible sources of error in all surveys that may be more serious than sampling error. These include: the difficulty of interviewing respondents who do not have a home telephone; the refusal by some with home telephones to be interviewed; the order in which questions are asked; the wording of questions; the way and extent to which data are weighted; and the manner in which specialized populations, such as likely voters, are determined. It is difficult to quantify the errors that may result from these and other factors. Research methodology, questionnaire design and fieldwork for this survey were completed by SurveyUSA of Clifton, NJ. This statement conforms to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.
