Hearing Aids: Why Are You Waiting?

Many people with hearing loss think that hearing aids will make them look older or a ect others perception of them. They put o getting hearing aids because they think that they can get by just ne; however, getting by is stressful and hard work. It often leads to isolation and social withdrawal. Be honest with yourself. Wearing hearing aids is much less noticeable than constantly asking people to repeat themselves or responding to a question with an unrelated answer. The truth is that a well- tted hearing aid can greatly enhance your ability to interact with others. Hearing aids can minimize many problems that go along with hearing loss, such as di culty understanding conversations, hearing environmental noise as well as location and direction of sound. And they can help ght feelings of social isolation. If your hearing loss a ects your ability to communicate with others or makes you feel self-conscious, it may be time to consider hearing aids. Though it may be awkward at rst, over time you'll adjust to the device and enjoy your enhanced ability to hear and communicate in a variety of situations. By wearing your hearing aids regularly, you will begin to notice signi cant improvements in your quality of life. Hearing Loss is much more noticeable than Hearing Aids. The rst step is to have your hearing tested. Call for your appointment today with our Clinical Audiologist.

I remember now why I hate shopping it makes my head hurt like the dickens!! The missus has been kind enough to give me the go ahead to shop for a back-up tractor for all my essential toys errr tractor implements. I started out thinking that an older tractor with 60 horsepower would be best as that is the recommended maximum horsepower for my wood chipper!! Along with a loader with a float position and the remote hydraulics needed for my backhoe attachment this unit would be perfect. Checking out the full specifications, however, I find that these tractors are weighing in at a very burly 6,000 plus pounds. This is one ton more than my current tractor, which already gives me the willies going across my bridge. Should I risk an additional 2,000 pounds on my bridge ... I dont think so. Okay, lets re-think and explore other options. How about newer and smaller??? Might work out great!! Check out hydraulic flow, PTO horsepower, loader lift capacity, three point hitch lift capacity, check on-line for product reviews and problems, check my sanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More importantly, when looking at lighter and less expensive tractors I have tried to evaluate the Mikie factor!! If I run this tractor into a big tree or over a big stump, how many pieces of tractor will I have to pick up afterwards. Okay, Mikie calm down and give your head a shake!!! Oooohh the rattling sound is very annoying. Right now I wouldnt want a tractor if you paid me to take it away!! On second thought, please make all cheques payable to Mikie. In the mean time I just may need the winter to recover from my shopping experience. It is a certainty that I wont be recovered in time for Christmas. Sorry dear!! A mere 20 years ago, most tractor buyers would go to one or two nearby dealers who they felt were trusted and make a decision from the relatively small number of available units. Today, with the internet, I can access tractors for sale almost any where in the world. In one browser tab I can locate a tractor, then open a second tab to check out the complete specs for that model and then in a third tab check tractor forums for peoples experience with that tractor good or bad and then there is a fair chance that if I go to YouTube, I can probably find a video of the darn thing working in the backyard or out in the woods. By the time I have researched all options I should be one foot in the grave. While it is great to access information, what you really get is a headache and information overload. For now, I think I will just hibernate for a couple of months and maybe there will be a brand new to me tractor under the Christmas tree!!! 800

Picking up fallen branches has a double blessing of tidying the property and provides the basis for a grand bonfire and may be a hot dog or marshmallow toasting. It is still not too late to plant spring bulbs and a little effort now will reap rewards, not only in the spring but also through the chilly days of winter. William Wordsworth was right on the mark with his poem Daffodils and I feel its worth quoting here: I wanderd lonely as a cloud that floats on high oer vale and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretchd in never ending line along the margin of the bay; Ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they out did the sparkling waves with glee: A poet could not but be glad in such a jocund company: I gazed and gazed but little thought what wealth to me the show had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie in vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils. As we bank up our roses and add a little wind protection for the rhododendrons or cut back the perennials removing the spent leaves that are desirable winter homes for the many pests that abound, we would do well to remember the beauty of the blossoms that we have so enjoyed through the growing season. These memories, stored in our minds and hearts will sustain us with happy thoughts as we thumb through the garden books and catalogues in our cozy homes, dreaming of next years bounty, snugly wrapped under winters protective blanket. Have a great winter... enjoy life! 805

Are you a nature lover? Do you enjoy being outdoors and learning more about the natural world? Why not consider joining in on one or more of the Saint John Naturalists Club presentations or field trips? No experience necessary and all events are open to one-and-all, SJNC members or not! Early November means great seabird viewing from the ferry and shore as well as a good representation of our over-wintering birds. It is also the time for rarities to appear in the province. Ticks and Lyme disease continue to generate considerable media interest and public concern, especially for those who love the outdoors; on Monday, November 14th (7:30pm at the NB Museum, Market Square) join the Naturalists Club for Tick Talk. Veterinary pathologist and naturalist, Jim Goltz, will share information about what species occur in New Brunswick, when and where they occur, what threats they pose to human and animal health, how to identify them, what new information has been learned from tick research in the province and how climate change is likely to affect tick populations and increase health risks. The SJNCs regular monthly meeting is held at the NB Museum at Market Square on the second Monday of the month beginning at 7:30pm. For more information, contact Hank Scarth at 6477511 or at hhs@rogers.com; or, visit saintjohnnaturalistsclub. org. 620

Dayspring Ministries Inc. sends out a big ank You to the Greater Saint John Community Foundation for their nancial help with our International Community Garden in Rothesay. Despite a cool and wet beginning, the garden produced an abundance of crops for the newcomers who were looking for land to grow their own vegetables. We are so thankful for this opportunity to assist about 27 families, representing over 100 people working together and building a sense of community among some of our international newcomers. Gardeners are still enjoying the fruit of their harvests! ere is a long list of families and organizations that contributed nancial gi s, gas cards for transportation, manure/ compost, trucking, seeds, tools, etc. It was very exciting to see our community come alongside to help make this endeavor successful. Part of the money went into building a high deer fence which protected everyones investment. Nobody lost any produce to those hungry nibblers! anks as well to CBCs Information Morning and CTV for their coverage that helped bring the community together during this project. We are sad the season is over, but are already preparing and looking forward to next spring and summer. 630

MAKEOVER
ese past few months saw us undertake a makeover of our logo and look that we introduced in the magazines last month. We have had lots of discussion on colours and fonts and styles, but underneath Ossekeag Publishing has not changed. We put on a new pair of jeans and got an updated haircut, and we had fun in the process, and now we would love to have your comments and opinions as we continue to tweak the look. Fun as that may be, our primary focus is not on the appearance but the substance. One of the things I love about this business is the many community minded people it brings me in contact with. is week I had a visit from a woman who works at Hampton High School who is on a mission. Actually she is on several missions for her kids at the high school, but the speci c initiative she was in to see me about was Adopt A Grad. Anyone who has had a child or grandchild graduate in recent years will understand the cost involved, with grad fees, grad photos, yearbook, prom. Not every family is in a position to fund all of this for their graduating student; in some cases they struggle just to send their kids to school with a lunch every day. In the big scheme of things, having grad photos and a yearbook and attending prom cannot trump buying groceries for the family. Still every young person should have the opportunity to have the photos and the yearbook and to attend the prom, to celebrate with their school friends as they make that big step from childhood to the adult world. With that as their goal a small group at Hampton High have identi ed the students most in need of a little support and are working to ensure that they too will someday be able to haul out that old yearbook and show their kids that yes indeed their father really was the original hipster or their mother was captain of the debate team. ey can drag that old prom dress out of the back of the closet for their daughter to try on and can remember with fondness the end of their high school years. If you want to be part of this great idea I can put you in touch with the organizers. If you want to do the same in your school, I will be happy to promote it for you. Our little makeover has been fun. Playing a small part to help out a graduating student is a joy. A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives roses. ~ Chinese Proverb. 801
