Sequence of Teaching/Learning Experiences Activating Prior Knowledge: Introduce the class to National Day against Bullying and Violence which is held on the 18th of March (this lesson should be held close to the date). Explain to the students that Friday 18 March 2011 is Australia's first annual community awareness campaign to address bullying. The event will be on the third Friday in March each year. 2011 National Day focus: bystander behaviour. Bullying is not just a personal predicament. All members of the school community have a part to play in ending bullying and ensuring safe school environments. Schools recognise that bystanders play a particularly important role. Therefore through emphasizing this, the students are given the idea that can actually make a difference! Brainstorm with the students, What is a bystander? Write down their ideas on the IWB around the question. Then compare their ideas with the resource: Childrens youth and womens health service. On the IWB, the website www.cyh.com will display: What is a bystander? A bystander is someone who happens to be there when something is happening. This topic is about being a bystander when someone is being bullied.

Body: Every day the news is full of stories about people being bullied by someone who is more powerful than they are.

Maybe the person being bullied looks different. 2

Maybe they have a different religion. Maybe they are trying to move to a safer place. Maybe they haven't got a job. Maybe they are trying to make a life for themselves and their families. Maybe they have a disability. Maybe some more powerful people are bullying them just because they can! Recently, there was a story in the news (most of you might know this story: if hands are in the air) about a boy named Casey. Casey had been bullied for years (starting in primary school and then continued on to high school). The news report about Casey will be displayed on the IWB. But firstly, why do we have to critically analyse media reports, Do we believe everything the media reports?, What is your point of view from this story? These are some of the questions you should be thinking about whilst your watching this news report. Play news report on IWB: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8226423/casey-thepunisher-tells-of-bullying. Conclusion/Discussion: After news report, have a discussion with the students about their point of view of the report. Make it clear to the students that violence is not what is being highlighted within this story, it is the fact that Casey stood up for himself. Ask the children if they can identify any bystanders within this report? Who were the students watching the incident happen? What could have they done to prevent this bullying from occurring? Brainstorm a list of strategies that could be used in the following situation. Write students answers to these questions on the IWB for reference to the next lesson. 10 mins
