Dendrograms : Dendrograms
For drawing dendrogram (vector graphs). This module draws dendrogram that are graphical representation for classification (indexed hierarchy, distances among objects). This option uses only one dialogue window:

Enter the binary file that contains indexed hierarchy (Clusters : Compute hierarchy). Enter the file that identify the object to be clustered (use # for putting numbers). Option for drawing and horizontal or a vertical dendrogram. Use the Sarcelles example (Auda, Chessel & Tamisier, 1983). Run correspondence analysis of table Sar:

Compute the Chi2 distances among rows and among columns (Distances : Triplet To Distance Matrix):

Compute the hierarchies associated to the hierarchical ascendant classification and the average link (Clusters : Compute hierarchy):

Display dendrograms of rows (sites) and of columns (months):

Results are not very satisfying. To use a HAC based on the between-groups inertia less sensitive to chain effects (see Clusters), it is necessary to use the initial data table. Run the classification of rows:

Transpose the table to run the classification of columns:

Redo the dendrograms:

Dendrograms are useful for validating classification models. In the above example, migratory processes are continuous and a clustering approach is not well adapted. See some more favourable cases in Scatters. Dendrograms and indexed hierarchies are described in e.g., Lebart, Morineau & Piron (1995: p. 158 and following), Benzecri et al. (1973: p. 125 and following), Rouanet & Le Roux (1993: p. 121), Lerman (1981), Manly, B.F. (1994: p. 129 and following), and Cailliez & Pages (1976: p. 544 and following).
