SF6 Insulated Ring Main Unit

Reliable Operation | | Totally Enclosed | | Maintenance Free | | Customised Solutions | SF6

Introduction

Manufacturing Characteristics

The Ring Main Unit (RMU) has been designed for rated voltages of up to 24kV and rated currents up to 630A. It is fully insulated in SF6 gas that is used as insulating and switching medium.

The gas insulated units are insensitive to environmental influences, e.g : to humidity, dirt, dust etc. It has a compact self-supporting metal-clad structure and it is maintenance free.

Key Features

• Safe for user due to multiple interlocking system.

• Simple operation with clear operation guidance.

• Maintenance free

• Stable in any climatic condition (-25 to 40 ºC)

• Easy / convenient cable installation

• Easy fuse replacement

Advantages of Our SF6 Insulated Ring Main Units

• Minimizes land area requirement for sub stations.

• The compact size enables the distribution substations to be located near to the load centers.

• Metal enclosure and gas protects the switchgear interior components against environmental degradation

• Can break small magnetizing currents without building up system over voltages.

• Extended service life for RMU.

• All components conducting medium voltage are insensitive to :

Telecontrol Features

- air humidity

- aggressive atmosphere

- dirt

- dust

SF6 properties:

The RMU is designed to adapt for telecontrol

system and can be equipped with:

• Motorized switching control

• Switch condition indication & fault indication

• Emergency tripping for transformer feeder.

- Extremely high insulating capacity

- An inert, non-combustible media with high dielectric property.

- No contact oxidation

• Maximum operating safety due to :

- Low gas pressurization

- Excellent gas-proofing

- High inductive breaking capacity

The above featured will help to:

• Improve the service quality by reducing the

outage time

• Reduce the operating cost by allowing faster

network reconfiguration after fault event.

• Allows greater safety and comfort to personnel

using network operation to monitor and

control.

General Description

Mechanical Design

A standard 3 function RMU (2L + 1T) comprises two “incoming line” and one “transformer outlet”. Other

configuration of RMU from one function up to 4 functions can be supplied in accordance to customer’s

requirement. The operating mechanism is simple and reliable with guarantee of more than 5000 cycles C-O-

E and complete with essential interlocks for preventing faulty operation; hence providing extreme safety and

reliability. The fuse grounding, up and down stream, is obtained by means of an additional moving contact

at the switch-disconnector.

Built-in Features

1. Switching Device

The main components in the patented SF6 breaking chamber is the 3 position switch-disconnector (close- open-earth) operated by a control operating mechanism fitted on the front panel of RMU. The moving contact position of the switch-disconnector can be seen clearly and visually through the transparent windows

(one for each path) located on the front side of RMU (optional feature).

2. Safety Interlocks

Our RMU is provided with the necessary and reliable safety Interlocks.

• Accessibility to fuse compartment only when earth switch is “ON”.

• The earth switch can turn “OFF” and switch disconnector can turn “ON” only when the fuse compartment cover is “CLOSED”.

• The switch disconnector can be turned “ON” only after the replacement of faulty fuse in the event of a fault.

• The switch disconnector can only be turned “ON” when earth switch is “OFF”.

• The earth switch can only be turned “ON” when switch disconnector is “OFF”.

3. Pressure Release Disc

The pressure device which are metallically separated from the cable connection act as rupture joint for the case of internal excess pressure of the gas-filled compartment. It is located at the rear side of the tank to ensure the safety of the operating personnel by guiding the arc release.

4. Pressure Gauge

Monitoring device used to indicate the pressure inside SF6 cubicle.

5. Voltage Indicator & Live Phasing

Indication device to check the present of voltage in phase. Voltage indicator incorporated with 3 hubs for live phasing test.

6. Mimic Diagram

Optional features

1. Transparent Visualization window

Visible physical separation of switch disconnector inside the apparatus

2. Motorized Switching Control

The switching operating mechanism includes a space that is reserved for motorized control. Installation flexibility:

• Factory pre-installed

• On site installation without de-energizing the RMU

3. Switch Condition Indication

The switch operating mechanism includes a space that is reserved for auxiliary switch. The switch condition can be detected through the auxiliary contacts for remote monitoring purposes.

4. Fault Indication

The RMU reserves space for mounting various type of CT & Fault Indicator. Both the earth fault & phase to phase fault can be detected depending on type of the CT and Fault Indicator being is used. In the event of fault, the signal is sent to Master Station through Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for rapid network configuration.

5. Emergency Tripping for Transformer Feeder

The RMU is provided for shunt trip opening release which can operate from remote. All modern transformers are provided with sensing devices to forecast probable disaster. In the event of any abnormality sensed by these special devices, the emergency tripping can then come into operation to prevent major disasters.

6. Zero Voltage Detection

An indicator showing the system malfunction through lightning flash symbols.

7. Short Circuit Indicator

Three indicator with symbol L1, L2, L3 are displayed separately and can be equipped with:

• Manual reset

• Earth fault indicator

Arc resistant protection cover which protects cable connections.

1) The fuse selection table is just for quick reference only when the HV fuse details & LV fuse details are
unavailable.
2) The more accurate fuse selection method should refer to IEC 62271-105 (Clause 8 & Annex A) & IEC
