Short answer questions - one question from each module. All questions are compulsory. 5 x 3 = 15 marks 1. Correlate the strength of an element with atomic number 2. Explain with sketch the effect of alloying elements on the formation and stability of carbides 5. Explain with sketch the effects of stress concentration on fatigue.

PART B
Analytical / problem solving questions 5 x 5 = 25 marks One question from each module - All questions are compulsory. 6. What are the attributes of deep and shallow well bonding in thermal expansion, melting point, and elastic modulus on metal cutting process? Explain with neat sketches. 7. Calculate the number of atoms per unit cell of the metal having a lattice parameter of 2.88 A0 and a density of 7.87 gm/cm3. Atomic weight A = 55.85 g/mol. 8. Postulate with neat sketches, why 100 % pure metals are weaker? What are the primary functions of alloying? Explain the fundamental rules governing the alloying with neat sketches and how is it accomplished in substitution and interstitial solid solutions? 9. Explain how the properties of steel depend upon its alloying elements with neat sketches. 10. With a neat sketch, explain the effect of impact loading on ductile materials.

PART C
Two questions from each module - one question is choice. 5 x 12 marks = 60 marks 11. Explain with neat sketches, why covalent bonded materials are less dense than metallic and ionic bonded material? Why ionic and covalent bonded material exhibit bad conductors of heat and electricity? OR 12. Draw (110) and (111) planes and [110] and [111] directions in simple cubic crystal. Explain the fundamental involved in the X ray diffraction method. 13. What is Hall - Petch relation? Explain the effect of grain size and significance of grain boundaries, grain size distribution, grain shapes and orientation used in the application of mechanical strength and high temperature / creep applications OR 14. Explain with neat sketches the basic mechanism involved in the deformation of engineering materials? 15. Explain in detail the Iron Carbon equilibrium diagram with neat microstructure. Distinguish between the properties of pearlite, ferrite, bainite, spherodite, martensite, temperd martensite, with neat microstructure. OR 16. Why tempering follows hardening? Explain with neat sketches the austempering, martempering and ausforming and distinguish between them. 17. Explain the fundamental effects of alloying elements on polymorphic transformation temperatures, grain growth, eutectoid point, retardation of the transformation rates, formation and stability of carbides. OR 18. Give the composition, microstructure, properties and application of (i) Grey cast iron (ii) Malleable cast iron (iii) Spheroidal cast iron. 19. A small hole is drilled through a steel plate ahead of a crack, whether it can stop the cracks progress until repairs can be made or not? Explain in detail and derive the equation. OR 20. What is the grain size preferred for creep applications? Explain with neat sketches.
