Cancer Classifications and Human-Health Effects for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Emphasized in the National Water-Quality Assessment

(NAWQA) Program Introduction This table provides cancer classifications and summarizes the most recent health effects information published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) for 42 of the 55 VOCs emphasized in the U.S. Geological Surveys Circular 1992 The Quality of Our Nations WatersVolatile Organic Compounds in the Nations Ground Water and Drinking-Water Supply Wells. A comprehensive list of all possible health effects associated with exposure with these VOCs is not provided in this table. Indeed, various sources may provide differing health-effects information for the same VOC. As a result of new research findings, the information provided in this table may change over time. Information Sources Health effect information is categorized by (1) cancer classifications and (2) target-organ and health-effects information. Cancer classifications for the table were based on information from three sources: (1) USEPA Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2005); (2) USEPA Office of Water (OW) (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2004a); and (3) USEPA Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2004b). Each source provides a date that a cancer classification was established for each VOC. Because these classifications may differ among the three sources, information from the most recently published cancer classification is listed in the table. For example, for bromomethane, the following cancer classification information was established by the sources at the specified dates: Group D, USEPA IRIS, March 1, 1989

Group D, USEPA OW, 1989 Not Likely, USEPA OPP, August 4, 1992

Because the cancer classification from the USEPA OPP provides the most recent information, not likely is the cancer classification listed in the table. Four sources of target-organ and health-effects information were used in this table, including: (1) ATSDR Toxicological Profiles (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2005); (2) USEPA IRIS database (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2005); (3) USEPA Office OPP (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2004b); and (4) USEPA OW (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2003). As previously noted for the cancer classifications, the most recent information provided among these sources is included in the table.

Additional Information on Health Effects Additional human-health effects information for NAWQAs 42 VOCs is provided from the previously listed sources.
