Spring 2011 marks The Experiments sixth frontlist since our first in fall 2009. It is also our first season being distributed by Workman Publishing Company*, and were excited to begin working with Workman and their affiliates around the world. Were called The Experiment because every book is a test of new ideas and because were motivated by the curiosity and wonder that drive every scientific experiment. Our scale is intimate, our books far-reaching. Our booksall nonfiction, much of it practicalfocus on food (how to grow, cook, and enjoy it), fitness and health, psychology and personal development, parenting, relationships, sexuality, personal finance, popular science, and nature. By the end of 2010, we will have 25 books in print, with six more coming out in winter 2011, followed by the spring 2011 titles that open this catalog. About our newest titles: Nourishing vegetarian entres, delicious glutenfree cupcakes, and high protein/low GI fare are the stars of our three new cookbooks. And for readers looking for nourishment of a different kind: Here are a timely guide to parenting on message, a humorous handbook for young adults facing awkward situations, and a madcap account of the beekeeping life. I cant say enough good things about the authors of these and all of our books. They are the source of and the unflagging advocates behind the new ideas that propel our experiment. We hope that you will want to read, sell, buy, review, feature, blog about, cook from, license, translate, give as gifts, or otherwise enjoy their books! MATTHEW LORE President & Publisher *Our new Spring 2011 titles (on pages 16 of this catalog) are now being sold by Workman Publishing Company. Effective February 1, 2011, all of our titles will be distributed by Workman. For more detailed information, please see page 24 and the inside back cover.

A madcap and instructive account of the beekeeping life Appealing illustrations reveal the inner workings of beehives Beekeeping is on the rise everywhereand newly legalized in New York Citys five boroughs and other municipalities around the U.S. The ongoing risk of mass bee die-offs and the importance of pollinators are hot topics
The hilarious, sometimes disastrous, and always engrossing story of BBC journalist Bill Turnbulls accidental love affair with beeswhich doubles as a guide for new beekeepers
Bill Turnbull had no intention of becoming a beekeeper. But when an advertisement for beekeeping classes appeared in the family vets office shortly after a swarm of bees landed in Bills suburban backyard, it seemed to be a sign. Beekeeping turned out to be an even stickier operation than Bill expected, and he quickly learned that being enthusiastic about something doesnt necessarily make you a virtuoso. Full of laugh-out-loud antics, lessons learned the hard way, and a passion for the beauty and importance of the infuriating, fascinatingand increasingly threatenedhoneybee, Confessions of a Bad Beekeeper is both an introduction to the world of backyard beekeeping and a story about the transformative power of doing what you loveeven if youre a bit bad at it. What a fabulous, truthful book from a man who I am sure is a much better beekeeper than he claims to be. Smallholder (UK)

Award-winning physicist Gillian Turner does for Earths magnetic field what Dava Sobel did for longitude Over 55 black-and-white drawings and photos throughout The poles potential to flip is a favorite topic of popular science media (and doomsday theorists)
North Pole, South Pole traces an enduring question through its rich history of great thinkers, superstition, and controversy right up to todays startling conclusions
Why do compass needles point northbut not quite north? What guides the migration of birds, whales, and fish across the worlds oceans? How is Earth able to sustain life under an onslaught of solar wind and cosmic radiation? For centuries, the worlds great scientific minds have grappled with these questions, all rooted in the same phenomenonEarths magnetism. Over 2,000 years after the invention of the compass, Einstein called the source of Earths magnetic field one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of physics. Here, for the first time, is the complete story of the quest to understand Earths magnetismfrom the ancient Greeks fascination with lodestone, to the discovery that the North Pole has not always been in the Northand to the astonishing modern conclusions that finally revealed the true source. Richly illustrated and skillfully told, North Pole, South Pole unfolds the human story behind the science: that of the inquisitive, persevering, and often dissenting thinkers who unlocked the secrets at our planets core. Fold up your map, and look up from your GPS . . . Youll never need to ask Which way am I heading? again!
Before satellite navigation, before the compass, and even before cartography, humans were navigating. The stars, the depth of a puddle, or a trill of birdsong could point the way homeand, for the alert traveler, they still can. Adventurer and navigation expert Tristan Gooley brings the art of natural navigation into the 21st century with this compelling guide to finding your way, day or night, on land or sea, in the city or the countryusing only the clues in your surroundings. Whether you go exploring in the mountains or on a lunch break, The Natural Navigator will keep you on course and show you the small wonders of the natural world: the celestial phenomena, weather patterns, and changing shadows that have served to guide both human and animal migrations for centuries. Enriched by helpful illustrations, and filled with navigational anecdotes collected across centuries, continents, and cultures, The Natural Navigator proves that anyone with a curious mind can still find north by looking at the starsand find adventure in their own backyard. The perfect book for getting you started on your own adventure. Sir Ranulph Fiennes, adventurer and author of Race to the Pole

An essential guide for the growing number of parents and clinicians raising and treating children who present as gender non-conformingwho dont identify with their biological gender

Drawing on numerous case histories, Dr. Diane Ehrensaft offers concrete strategies for understanding and supporting children who experience confusion about their gender identities. She also discusses the latest therapeutic advancements available to gendervariant children, offering a necessary alternative to cures that pressure children to conform to typical gender behavior. Ehrensaft uses her unique perspective as both a clinician and a parent of a gender-variant child to advocate a new approach, encouraging caregivers to support children as they explore their identities. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all cure for gender variance, Gender Born, Gender Made helps parents and their children understand and communicate about gender identity in creative and supportive ways.

Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett

This easy and enjoyable approach enables your baby to: Participate in family meals right from the start Develop hand-eye coordination and chewing skills Learn to love a variety of foods and to enjoy mealtimes.

How to Be a Sister
A LOVE STORY WITH A TWIST OF AUTISM
Eileen Garvin
Growing up with her sister Margaret, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3, was the defining influence of Eileen Garvins childhood. Margarets erratic behavior could be hilarious, stressful, and heart-breaking all at once. A quiet Sunday church service, for example, might provoke a wild outburst of laughter, swearing, or dancing. In this deeply felt, impeccably written memoir, Garvin brings a new voice to literature on autismthat of an adult sibling trying to reconnect with her older sisterand finds humor, wisdom, and love in the most unexpected of ways.
A marvelous, harrowing, life-affirming book. In looking to forge a meaningful relationship with her severely autistic sister, Eileen Garvin finds a simpler way of being in, and extending, every moment. Isnt that what were all after? I loved this book. And boy, can she write! Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life: A Memoir Garvins storytelling abilities are strong, and her fierce, protective love for Margaret, whom she brings to stinging life on the page, gives this book real power.
