This strange story is about a man without country who trapped by his lack of papers in Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris in 1988. His name is Mehran Karimi Nasseri. This Iranian man was lost in a bureaucratic nightmare when he found himself at the airport in Paris and realised that he had no permission to leave it because of problems with his documents. Actually we have different view points on the reasons of such a difficult situation. One of them is political disturbances in his fatherland. The second one is that the Belgium government denied granting him refugee status any more. Actually it doesnt play a great difference. The fact is to be the fact. Mehran couldnt but stay in Terminal One of the Charles de Gaulle airport. Some sources inform that he spend 11 years living there while others say that the spell is much longer, to be exact 16 years. I cant help thinking what he could be busy with for such a long period of time without family, friends or at least without leading a normal civilized life. What mode of life did he have to keep to? This question also has different answers. If we turn to the article on this theme, a following picture will come to our mind. First of all Mehran Karimi has a nickname Alfred. The reason of having decided to take another name is actually obscure. It is said that Alfred lives in the basement shopping mall of Terminal One. He has to sleep on a red bench, which is the only anchor in his life. Alfreds sleeping place is surrounded by a large number of different boxes, suitcases and plastic bags. Alfred has a diary which he recods in extraordinary detail every day of his strange existence in the airport. Despite of the fact that he doesnt have any facilities he manages to keep himself meticulously clean and groomed. Another source, which is a documentary film by Alexis Kouros, tells us that Mechran Nasseri is a real a victim of bureaucratic bungling and a string of bad luck. Important information which is omitted in the article but takes place in the film is Mehrams mental state. He has great problems with the health because of staying in the airport without leaving it for a long time. Speaking about his diary, it is important to mention that not all the records are logical and make sense. Moreover he looks rather bad because he eats only junk food and doesnt give up smoking a pipe. It is necessary I should point out such a thing that Mehran has become rather famous due to his story among mass media. A lot of representatives of different newspapers and magazines dont lose their chance to write an incredible story about this man. But the truth is that Mehran wishes he didnt feel as if he were an animal in the cage. The most significant event is that Steven Spielberg shot the film which is based on Mehrans story. Unfortunately the film is far away from the truth. Mehrans didnt arrive at New York because he wanted to get an autograph from a saxopohist. He didnt fell in love with a stewardess. And he didnt make friends. So there is no place for love and friendship in reality as it is showed in the film. Speaking about my attitude toward Mehrans story, Id like to say that I feel sorry for him because I hold the opinion that nobody deserves to be caught in such a nightmare. I which he had managed to get free earlier and hadnt lost so many years in vain. Unfortunately, there was no way out or just his desire to escape wasnt too strong. I think that it is unreasonably to blame anybody, who benefit from Mehram, for apathy toward his lot because everything depends on us in this world. He should be only thankful for all the support.
