By the end of this session the students should be able to:

Plan a presentation Plan and organize are the first things you must do before giving a presentation. Careful planning makes for interesting effective presentations that are easy to deliver. You can add group learning activities such as case studies or role plays, and the like.

-:Process of planning for the presentation includes


1. The learning objective(s) (i.e., what students should know and be able to do after the presentation)

An outline of key points written on paper or put on transparencies or flipchart pages, or projected using a computer. 3. Questions to involve the students. 4. Reminders of any planned activities during the presentation, use of visual aids, group learning activities such as case studies or role plays, and the like. 5. Summary questions, comments, or activities.

Introduce a presentation - The first few minutes of your presentation are critical in stimulating student's interests and providing clear information about presentation. Purpose of Introduction:Capture the interest of the entire group and prepare students for the information to follow. 2. Make students aware of the objectives and expectations. 3. Help to create a positive learning climate. N.B. A good introduction is critical to the success of a presentation.

Tips for Creating an Effective Introduction

Review the objectives: is a precise and measurable statement

describing what the student will learn by attending the presentation.

2. Relate the topic to previously covered content 3. Share a personal experience. That is relevant to the topic. 4. Relate the topic to the students experiences. Many topics can be related to situation. 5. Use a case study or problem-solving activity. That focuses attention on specific situation related to teaching topic. 6. Give a classroom demonstration. Most clinical courses involve equipment, instruments and skills that need to be demonstrated increase student interest. 7. Use a game, role play or simulation can increase student interest through student involvement.

8. Relate the topic to future work experiences 9. Relate the topic to a real-life experience. 10. Use an imaginative transparency or slide 11. Use a videotape or other media 12. Show an appropriate cartoon with the overhead or slide projector. . 13. Make a provocative statement to encourage discussion. 14. Ask a series of questions related to the presentation topic. Effective presentation skills The skilled lecturer uses a variety of approaches to involve students, maintain interest such as Questioning techniques and visual aids.

Follow a plan use the lecture notes prepared during the planning stage. The notes include reminders and key points in the lecture introduction, body and summary. Open the lecture with a good introduction designed to capture the interest and attention of the students. Communicate in a way that is easy to understand Interact with students by Maintain eye contact with the students. Eye contact gives the educator feedback on how well students understand the content Exhibit enthusiasm about the topic. Smiling, moving around the room and gesturing with hands and arms project a feeling of energy and excitement. Use appropriate visual aids that help you to explain complex topic. Ask a number of questions and encourage students to ask questions. Provide positive feedback when students ask questions, answer questions or make comments. Use students names as often as possible. One of the most effective techniques an educator can use during a presentation to help ensure interaction is to ask and encourage questions.

Questions can be used to introduce lectures, and to keep students interested in the session.

Involving students through questioning helps to develop problem solving skills.

Suggestions for using questions include:


1. Ask a question of the entire group 2. State the question, pause, and then direct the question to a specific student 3. Target the question to one student by using that persons name before asking the question 4. Repeat students questions and correct answers to ensure that all students hear the discussion. 5. Provide positive reinforcement when students respond. This praise will help to create a very positive climate. 6. Respond to partially correct answers (compliment for student answer and then correct or inaccurate parts) 7. Restate the question when the answer is incorrect (noncritical response)

8. Redirect the question to another student when a student does not respond (after restating the question)
9. When students ask you questions, respond in one of the following ways:

Answer the question Respond with another question Refer to a later section in course which the question will be answered. Two final questioning cautions: When you are unable to answer a question, admit this and then find the answer before the next session.

Avoid letting student questions get you out of the

topic.

N.B. Use question during presentations, clinical demonstration,


small group discussions and in any other situations to maintain students interest and check their understanding.

Summarize a presentation The purpose of the presentation summary is to draw together the critical information presented and ensure that students leave the presentation with a clear under-standing of this information. The summary should be brief and address only main points.

There are several techniques which can be used to summarize a presentation: Ask the students for questions. This gives students an opportunity to clarify their understanding of the content.

Ask questions of the students. Several questions which focus on the main points of the content may be used to summarize the content of the lecture. Use a transparency, slide or flipchart to review the summary points.

Administer a practice exercise or test Use a game to review main points

Summary
With planning and effective presentation techniques, the presentation can be a highly effective and interactive method for transferring knowledge to students. If the presentation is carefully planned, the educator will have a clear purpose of the presentation. Planning will also help ensure that the educator uses a variety of approaches to introduce, deliver and summarize the presentation.

Other key points to remember in preparing and delivering a presentation:

The first few minutes of a presentation are important. Plan them

well! Verbal communication skills are critical. These include appropriate voice projection, using students names, making smooth transitions, using examples and providing praise. Nonverbal communication skills also are very important. These include eye contact, positive facial expressions, gestures and movement. Effective questioning and interaction are critical to the success of the presentation. Questioning skills include planning questions in advance, asking a variety of questions, using students names and providing positive feedback. The presentation should be summarized by asking for questions, asking questions and using media to review main points.
