INTERNATIONAL MASTER PROGRAM FOR PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL AREA AND WATERSHED GEOGRAPHY FACULTY, GADJAH MADA

UNIVERSITY YOGYAKARTA INDONESIA

I. BACKGROUND Coastal areas are highly dynamic system with very complex physical and non-physical processes. Since, the majority of the worlds populations live in coastal regions to take advantage of marine and coastal resources, the development of coastal areas for industrial, business, residential, agricultural and recreational uses are growing rapidly. These developments contribute to aesthetic problems of land use, reduced natural coastal habitat, problem of the environmental degradation and increasing groundwater withdrawal leading to potential flash points for resource conflict. Meanwhile, physical processes such as waves, tidal inundation, sea level rise, erosion, sedimentation, coastal disasters (tsunami, flooding, etc) and various weather phenomena also play an important role in the coastal resources management. To manage such coastal areas is a unique and complex challenge. Integrated coastal management seeks to rise to this challenge by coordinated planning and action involving local communities, local government, NGO, engineer, stakeholder groups and managers at local, regional and national level as well as both natural and social scientists. Meanwhile, watershed as a unity of land region bounded by complex topographical barrier, is functioned as rain water receiver, conduct the streams, and even arrange its hydrological system and its ecosystem (known as eco-hydrological system). Watershed is generally divided into three major parts; the middle, the upstream, and the downstream. The upstream generally stood as conservation area and middle part is a cultivation area. The downstream is a coastal area which directly facing the impact of activity conducted in upstream and downstream. Therefore, the management planning of watershed may not disregard as the coastal planning management. The scientific explanation of how to manage watershed area has shifting from the traditional approach, which only relied on the physical and mechanical engineering (mono-discipline) 1

into the more comprehensive, complex and integrated approach (multi-discipline), which requires the integration of the physical, economical and also social element. The degradation of resources in the coastal and also in the watershed areas are caused by the absence of integrated planning between coastal management and watershed management. Lacking knowledge in coastal and watershed management and planning could possible deplete the nature and derive it into worsened condition. Therefore, the studies and implementation of the coastal management and watershed management is an important issue to be discussed. In line with the background above, The Faculty of Geography, Gadjah Mada University established a master program, started from the year 2003/2004, which called Master Program for Planning and Management of Coastal Area and Watershed / Perencanaan Pengelolaan Pesisir dan Daerah Aliran Sungai (MPPDAS). This program is the first master Program for Planning and Management of Coastal Area and Watershed in Indonesia and even in SouthEast Asia. The program emphasizes in the development of professional ability in the coastal and watershed resources management within relatively short period of study. II. PURPOSE OF EDUCATION To prepare a Master in management planning of coastal and watershed majoring on environmental trouble-shooting effort through geographical-ecological approach, spatial approach, and regional complex approach using remote sensing and geographic information systems. III. CURRICULUM AND THE PERIOD OF STUDY The program is designed in a block system for 3 semesters (18 months) comprising 40 credits/system kredit semester (SKS). (1 SKS equivalent with 3 European Credits Transfer System/ECTS). First and second Semesters is a period of regular campus activity such as lectures, practical, field work, discussion, and test. Master thesis (18 credits) is offered in Semester III. Before doing so, each student should prepare a presentation on their research proposal to get suggestion and approval from their supervisors. The total credits to finish up the program within the duration of 18 months are 40 SKS (Credit Semester Unit), equivalent 2

with 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The program will conduct mostly in English. However, in special cases, Indonesian Language will also be used. The curriculum Program is arranged to provide student with basic knowledge of planning and management in costal and watershed management. The structure of courses in block system is shown in Figure 1.
