ABOUT JITIHADA

ITIHADA Business Plan Competition is a national initiative of the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Competitiveness Project of the Ministry of Industrialization. The competition seeks to identify growth oriented and innovative business ideas that can be nurtured into viable and sustainable enterprises in order to create wealth for the businesses and increase employment opportunities for the people of Kenya.

JITIHADA I was successfully implemented in 2009 and this year the Kenya Institute of Management led Consortium will embark on tapping innovative business ideas from the manufacturing sector. JITHADA II, running for twelve months from June 2011 to July 2012, will focus on the value addition chain and place emphasis on entrepreneurs who take raw materials and turn them into a better, more customized products/services. For example, a confectioner will use flour and other food products to transform them into a cake, buns, etc. A fish farmer will harvest different types of fish to extract oil from them or skin to make thread. A carpenter on the other hand will transform timber into furniture products or a person who recycles metal waste and scrap or plastic waste and scrap to make iron sheets and kitchenware.

Implementing Partners JITIHADA II Business Plan competition is being implemented by a three-partner consortium consisting of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), TechoServe/ Kenya and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology/Institute for Human Resource Development (JKUAT/ IHRD). Time Frame The competition will run from June 2011June 2012 Stages of the competition JITIHADA II will be implemented within a period of 12 months and will comprise of; pre-competition stage, stage one, stage two, stage three and post competition stage. 1 Pre- competition stage The main activities include reviewing, screening and printing of training materials and the curriculum. Indentifying JITIHADA II board members, trainers, judges and Business Advisors. Approaching sponsors and setting up marketing and PR strategies and finally the official launching of JITIHADA II. 2 Stage one Up to 3000 participants apply by filling in and submitting an application form. After the applications have been received, initial screening and evaluation of the business ideas will be conducted by a panel of judges. The best 40 per cent entries proceed to the second stage of the competition. 3 Stage two Out of the eight provinces, 800 entrants are provided with a variety of business development services through seminars. They also receive individual mentoring to

help them strengthen their business plans in preparation for the competition at the county level. Judging at the county level are done by a panel from the private sector and written feedback on the business plans are provided to all the participating entrepreneurs. Judges pick the best entries in the eight counties at this stage. 4 Stage three The participants in the eight counties are further trained to develop their business plans for the national awards. The judges will choose the first prizewinner from among all these, who will get KShs 1,000,000 second prizewinner of Kshs 750,000 and third prizewinner of Kshs 500,000. Special Awards of Kshs. 250 000 each then go to the best Woman Entrepreneur and the Social Entrepreneur. The aftercare services commence at this point. 5 Post competition stage Feedback on the competition is gathered from stakeholders as aftercare services are implemented. The participants are assessed to determine the impact of the business plan competition in respect to their business growth. A JITIHADA II directory containing contacts of stakeholders is compiled. Program outreach The program will be implemented throughout the country in all the eight Counties. Target numbers About 800 Business Plan Competitors are expected to participate. This translates to at least 100 MSMES per province.

As such, the mission of JITIHADA II is to run and manage a Business Plan Competition (BPC) whose effort is to: Promote and support entrepreneurship in the manufacturing sector and the development and growth of sustainable and globally competitive MSMEs, thus creating wealth and increasing employment, incomes and economic opportunity for the people of Kenya. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME Increasing growth in the MSME sector through creating jobs and wealth by: Enhancing dramatically the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship particularly among the youth in Kenya. Providing targeted and relevant training and tools to new entrepreneurs and existing business Providing access to markets and market Information, capital, new technologies, space and equipment

Objectives of the national business plan competition The program has been designed to assist

Creating opportunities for microenterprises to transform into AMEs Providing Network and Linkage opportunities for existing MSMEs and emerging entrepreneurs between and among the established private sectors in Kenya Supporting this growth by developing a locally-owned and managed Business Plan Competition (BPC) program that will be self-sustaining through ongoing private sector support Providing information and recommendations to relevant government entities regarding key legal and regulatory constraints to launching and growing MSMEs.

AWARDS There will be only one level of awards. Five awards shall be presented at the National level. The value of the awards is KShs 2.7 5million, to be distributed as follows: overall winner KShs. 1 million, second first runner up KShs. 750,000.00, second runner up KShs. 500,000.00, best woman entrepreneur KShs. 250,00.00, best social entrepreneur KShs. 250,000.00. YOUR ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATION We would like to approach your organization to play a significant role in terms of supporting the project both during and after the competition. Your organization may participate by: Providing the networking opportunities for MSMEs Provide prize money for the top winners Provide training services for the MSMEs Mentor the selected winners to grow over time Provide aftercare services by being a member of the Technical Implementing Partners (TIP). SPONSORSHIP CATEGORIES We have structured the categories of sponsorships to four as follows: PLATINUM SPONSORSHIP- KSHS 2,000,000.00 (Two Million and above) The benefits will include: Participating in JITIHADA II National prize giving gala as a Platinum Sponsor,

giving a cash award and trophy branded with the companys name and logo. The gala night will attract 800 participants among other stakeholders. Premier listing on the JITIHADA II website, through a link to your website Recognition of your organization in all the JITIHADA II events Your company will be given 10 minutes to market your products to the entrepreneurs during their training in the eight counties (arrangements for company representatives to be covered by respective companies). This may be in form of talks or video or brochures, etc.
