The Alcatel 1664 SM Synchronous Add-Drop Multiplexer, is part of Alcatel's family of products that comply with the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) defined in the relevant ITU-T Recommendations. The 1664 SM is an STM-16 system for transmission and add/drop of STM-1 and STM-4 signals. The tributaries can be 140/155 Mbit/s electrical, optical STM-1 and optical STM-4. Up to 8+1 (spare) 140 Mbit/s or STM-1 tributary units or up to 4 STM-4 tributary can be housed in the 1664 SM. Any mix of the above tributary units is

possible in the same shelf. The system can be configured as Line Terminal Equipment, or as Add-Drop Multiplexer in both protected and unprotected configurations for transmission on standard and dispersion shifted fibers. The tributary subsystem can provide 1+1, or 1+N (N=max 8 Cards) HW protection facilities for electrical tributary. The STM-1 and STM-4 tributaries can be MS protected in 1:1 or 1+1 configuration. A VC4 cross connect matrix allows the possibility to change the inframe allocation of the tributary signals in the STM-16 stream.

Up to 4 Aggregate units can be fitted in the shelf when the line interfaces are 1+1 (or 1:1) protected in AddDrop configuration. Two of the four Aggregate cards can be replaced with two Integrated Optical Fiber Amplifier units (OFA) for application on ultra long distance link. An extensive auxiliary capacity, in accordance with SDH standards, is available for embedded services and user accessible interfaces. The system is fully managed locally by a standard PC connected via the Craft Terminal 'F' interface which uses standard MS-DOS/Window based SW being able to make equipment

configuration Performance Monitoring and Alarm Status enquiries. Through the QB3 interface connection to TNM systems, at the EML and NML layers, is possible as part of the Telecommunications Network Management. The following main applications for the 1664 SM have been identified in the telecommunication network: metropolitan rings, regional and national backbones, linear links, international gateways and long span links. The product is suitable for applications in both linear and ring network typologies.

As far as the ring solutions are concerned, it is possible to implement SNCP and MS-SPRING protection mechanisms. Optical length spans up to about 160 Km can be covered. The 1664 SM can perform the following functions: 1+0 & 1+1 Terminal multiplexer Add/Drop multiplexer Hub The above functions can be provided with Integrated Optical Amplifier. A VC4 cross-connect matrix allows the use of the 1664 SM as a small crossconnect node with a maximum capacity of the 16 STM-1 equivalent ports.

For long-haul an STM-16 regenerator according to ITU-T G958 is also available. The regenerator is a through-timing network element manageable remotely from the 1664 SM terminals or ADM's, and locally through an Equipment Craft Terminal (ECT). It can also be equipped with Integrated Optical Amplifiers. This equipment adopts the most advanced technologies suitable to optimize dimensions, power consumption and reliability, such as: VLSI HCMOS and ECL Asics Electro-Optic hybrid circuits Surface mounting

The lower part of the shelf contains slots for the following units: 4 slots for aggregate units (2 slots can also be devoted to integrated OFA's) 1 slot for equipment controller 3 slots for power units The middle section of the shelf contains slots for the following units: 9 slots for tributaries 2 slots for clock reference units 1 slot for aux unit 2 slots for switch units

management. One of the three power supplies is in hot stand-by. Figure 2 shows an example of 1664 SM Block Diagram. All units except the power supplies have an on-board microprocessor which is slave to the Equipment Controller. Remote inventory is also implemented. The equipment controller interfaces are: F interface to the local Craft Terminal QB3 interface to the TMN The SDH standard offers a large capacity of overhead channels. The 1664 SM offers access to several of those channels through 64 kbit/s and 2 Mbit/s interfaces. Direct access by microtelephone to an on-board Engineering Order Wire with DTMF signalling is possible.

The 1664 SM can be equipped with up to four STM-16 aggregates. The STM-16 aggregate is a bidirectional interface, one STM-16 optical transmitter and one STM-16 optical receiver are mounted on each aggregate unit (transceiver). Up to two STM-16 aggregates can be replaced with two OFA Units. The 1664 SM can be equipped with up to eight plus one 140/155 Mbit:s or STM-1 bitributary units or up to four STM-4 tributary units. Both bitributary and tributary cards provide bidirectional interface. The traffic modularity is equivalent to two STM-1 channels for bitributary units and four STM-1 channels for STM-4 tributary units. The tributaries can be of the following types: 140/155 Mbit:s electrical according to G703 The choice between 140 or 155 Mbit/s is set via SW from both ECT or OS: STM-1 Optical according to G957 STM-4 Optical according to G957 Every mix of tributaries is possible. Two redundant Clock Reference units are devoted to the generation and distribution of the clock necessary to synchronize the system. A very powerful control system guarantees complete alarm, diagnostic, configuration provisioning and performance monitoring

With reference to ITU-T recommendation G.957, the STM-16 optical interfaces are short and long haul types working at 1300 and 1550 nm wavelengths: S-16.1; L-16.1; L-16.2. Two types of L-16.2 J.E. optical interfaces are also available depending of the total dispersion required. LASERS are DFB and the detectors are in GaAs APDs and PINs. The STM-1 tributary optical interfaces are S-1.1, L-1.1, L-1.2 types. The STM-4 tributary optical interfaces are S-4.1 and L-4.2 types. The Optical source are InGaAsP Laser diodes Fabry-Perot type for 1300nm; DFB type for 1550 nm. The optical receivers are Germanium or InGaAs APD. Standard connectors are FC-PC or SC-PC type. Automatic laser shutdown facility is implemented, according to CCITT Rec. G.958.

Equipment structure

The mechanical desing of the 1664 SM is compact and modular. The equipment can be mounted in the Alcatel S9 rack, which complies with ETS300119. The S9 equipment rack can house up to two 1664 SM shelves. The printed board dimensions for all units are Double Eurocards (233 mm high x 220 mm deep). Figure 1 shows an example layout of the 1664 SM shelf. The upper part is devoted to the front interconnection panel which houses the access and protection switch modules.
