PAST TENSE

Types:
• PAST SIMPLE TENSE
• PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
• PAST PERFECT TENSE
• PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

SIMPLE PAST TENSE:


The Past Simple tense, also called the Simple Past, is
used for past actions that happened at a specific time in the past.

FORMULA:
2nd Form of Verb + Did + was, were

Example:-

1. Simple:

She liked it.

2. Negative:

She didn't like it.

3. Interrogative:

Did she like it?

Paragraph:

I got up early in the morning. I went for a morning walk. I came back and
started getting ready for my college. I ate my break fast. I went to college. When I
came back, my mother started preparing lunch. After eating my lunch I slept for a
couple of hour. I woke up when my friends came over. Then we played cricket for
an hour. I went home and started studying. I completed my home work and
watched television for an hour. Then I ate my dinner with my family. After dinner I
went for a walk with my father. I bade goodnight to my family. And my next day
started with the same routine.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE:
The past continuous is used to express something
that is happening at a precise moment in the past.

FORMULA:
2nd Form of Verb + was, were + ing

Example:-

1. Simple:

Ahmed was working on the report last night.

2. Negative:

Ahmed was not working on the report last night.

3. Interrogative:

Was Ahmed working on the report last night?

Paragraph:

I got up early in the morning. I was going for a morning walk. I was coming
back and started getting ready for my college. I ate my break fast. I went to
college. When I came back, my mother started preparing lunch. After eating my
lunch I slept for a couple of hours. I woke up when my friends came over. Then
we played cricket for an hour. I went home and started studying. I completed my
home work and watched television for an hour. Then I ate my dinner with my
family. After dinner I went for a walk with my father. I bade goodnight to my family.
And my next day started with the same routine.

PAST PERFECT TENSE:
The past perfect is used to talk about an action that
is finished before another action in the past.

FORMULA:
3rd Form of Verb + had

Example:-

Simple:

Ahmed had worked on the report last night.

Negative:

Ahmed had not worked on the report last night.

Interrogative:

Had Ahmed worked on the report last night?

Paragraph:

I had gotten up early in the morning. I had gone for a morning walk. I had
come back and started getting ready for my college. I had my break fast. I had
gone to college. When I came back, my mother had started preparing lunch. After
having my lunch I had slept for a couple of hours. I had wakened up when my
friends came over. Then we had played cricket for an hour. I had gone home and
started studying. I had completed my homework and watched television for an
hour. Then I had eaten my dinner with my family. After dinner I had gone for a

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE:
The past perfect is used to talk about an action that is finished
before another action in the past.

FORMULA:
3rd Form of Verb + had been + ing + since, for

Example:-

Simple:

Ahmed had been working on the report since last night.

Negative:

Ahmed had not been working on the report since last night.

Interrogative:

Had Ahmed been working on the report since last night?

Paragraph:

I had been getting first position since first grade. I had been going for a
morning walk for last three years. When I came back, my mother had started
preparing lunch. After having my lunch I had slept for a couple of hours. I had
wakened up when my friends came over. Then we had played cricket for an hour.
I had gone home and started studying. I had completed my homework and
watched television for an hour. Then I had eaten my dinner with my family. After
dinner I had gone for a walk with my father. I had bid goodnight to my family. And
my next day started with the same routine.
