National Observances
By: Fabian-Baber Communications, Inc. Grade: K-4 This is a video contains short segments on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Election Day and voting, and Independence Day. About 25 mins long. Suggestion: This video could be shown as a short introduction to the holidays before an activity or the way to students national patriotism.

Pink and Say


By: Patricia Polacco Call Number: E POL Grade: 4-UP This book is about two Union Soldiers both boys who are in Confederate territory. It describes their struggles and capture at Andersonville. Based on a true story. Suggestion: This is a longer book and mature topic. Pinks mother is killed and Pink is hanged but the story helps students to understand the hardships soldiers face and the friendships made. This would be good to tie in with Veterans Day or Civil War lessons. Recommended for whole group Suggestion: This is a really quick engaging book that could be used with any grade level. Each story is a denite genre and could be used to help teach students about genres. It could also be used as a writing prompt to make a class book. Each student having to connect their story to another students.

Activities to Send to Soldiers Say Thanks Postcards- This website allows you to choose a student designed postcard and message which they will send to a solider oversees. Wreaths Across America - Around Christmas, this organization places wreaths on veterans graves. In Daisy Dog coloring book there is a wreath you can have students color with words of encouragement and thanks.

It does miss some obvious ones for elementary which is why I recommend it for teachers. You can create a visual map of similar words and print it out to display in class. Features: - Choose your own words - Double click any word will expand the connections - Save image so it can be printed or embedded in website/blog. Could be used as a reminder for submitting an application. iDoneThis http://www.idonethis.com/ This website asks what you have completed everyday and keeps track of what you have done. This is something you can use to keep track of your professional accomplishments or with your class to show them all that they complete in a period of time. Daring Librarian: Melvil Dewey Raps http://www.thedaringlibrarian.com/ 2011/10/melvil-dewey-internationallibrary-hip.html This is a hilarious video with a man rapping about the Dewey Decimal System. Students would greatly enjoy watching this. Different way to approach teaching it.
