Abstract General Packet Radio Service is a packet switched technology, based on GSM.

GPRS services reflects the GSM services with an exception that the GPRS will have a tremendous transmission rate which has made a good impact in most of the existing services and has allowed the possibility of introduction of new services as operators and users (business/private) appreciate the newly introduced technology. In this report we have explained GPRS system in order to improve understanding of a commonly used software protocol. We have first shown the architecture and then shown the actual functioning of GPRS. Intro 1 background The fast development of wireless technology and the increase of demand for private usage and in business for a high data rate make of this technology one of the most important fields of research in this decade. Furthermore the emergence of multimedia applications such as television or internet on mobile stations requires a high data rate. In the second generation of mobile phone, the GSM brought optimal improvement for the voice services. The circuit-switched interference on the GSM services was useful for voice call traffic but inefficient for data. GPRS/EDGE services, which are packet switched services, are an evolution of the GSM which allow wireless data services with rates up to 473 kbps. Because of those high rates, multimedia application can also be run on the mobile devices trough Internet. 2 description General Packet Radio Service or GPRS is a GSM based packet switched technology. It enables connections based on Internet Protocols which support wide range of enterprise and commercial applications. The radio and network resources accessed ondemand basis, when data actually needs to be transmitted between the mobile user and the network. The data is divided into packets and is then transferred via the radio and core network. GPRS facilitates instant connections whereby information can be sent or received immediately as the need arises, subject to radio coverage, in the way that the GPRS users are always connected (always on). GPRS enables several new applications. GPRS will enable Internet applications, from web browsing to chat, location based applications, e-commerce etc over the mobile network. Other new applications for GPRS, include file transfer and the ability to remotely access and control/monitor house appliances and machines. 3 usability

The increased functionality of GPRS will decrease the incremental cost to provide data services, an occurrence that will, in turn, increase the penetration of data services among consumer and business users. In addition, GPRS will allow improved quality of data services as measured in terms of reliability, response time, and features supported. GPRS offers up to ~171.2 Kbps, depending on the network availability, channel coding scheme and terminal capability. This increase in speed with respect to GSM is achieved by using more than one timeslot of the TDMA frame. Due to the packet switched characteristics the allocation of the available timeslots may vary from one instant to the next (e.g. it may have 8 timeslots at one time and 4 later on). To use GPRS, users specifically need a mobile phone or terminal that supports GPRS, a subscription to a mobile telephone network that supports GPRS and the use of GPRS must be enabled for that user. GPRS is important as a migration step toward thirdgeneration (3G) networks. GPRS will allow network operators to implement an IP-based core architecture for data applications, which will continue to be used and expanded upon for 3G services for integrated voice and data applications. In addition, GPRS will prove a testing and development area for new services and applications, which will also be used in the development of 3G services. It is possible that some mobile Network operators provide Automatic access to the GPRS, others will require a specific knowledge of how to use their specific model of mobile phone to send or receive information through GPRS. Objective This report is designed to give a basic understanding of GPRS to the reader. GPRS is quickly becoming one of the most commonly used mobile data service despite being rendered technologically obsolete by 4G and 5G systems. It is a very useful service and is very popular in India. To help readers understand GPRS system which they use almost everyday, is the objective of this report. Layout As you end up doing it. Mostly just mention which chapter does what in one line End Intro Conclusion 1 summary Based on the initial purpose of this project, we can say that the demand of high data rate is not a big problem for the GPRS connection. As said in the beginning of the Report, the coming out of multimedia applications such as television or Internet on mobile stations, requires an optimization of the

connection. Now we know that this could be reached by usage of GPRS data service. GPRS is an efficient and functional system of data transmission and has been found to be highly suitable for internet services in mobile devices. This Report gives the reader an understanding of the basic structure and working of GPRS system and also explains its utility as a mobile data service. 2 future scope http://www.mobilein.com/GPRS.pdf just the future scope n 1st para of conclusion from this link
