FO: 11 Ribbed Hat Plus the Pattern

Posted on August 31, 2006 by Liz

Pattern: My Own Yarn: Caron Simply Soft (100% Acrylic) Needles: US7 This was a pretty quick knit. I really want to call it the NJ Partial Continental Hat but, while its pretty descriptive, it seems a bit long. I started this while down in NJ with the plan to make it completely with the Continental (pick) Method. I got about 2 inches in and wanted to kill myself and that is bad. At that point I gave up and went to my favored English (throw) Method. Continental was just so annoying and awkward for me. Surprisingly I had a consistent gauge while on Continental, but it hurt my hand A LOT and I just really didnt like the motion. I will try it again, even if it kills me. Oh, and its my second hat for Made by Hand. And yes, you read the title. A pattern (ooohhh). And a free pattern at that (oooooooohhhhhh). Its nothing special and you can probably find 20 bazillion other hat patterns like it. I dont normally write up patterns because if I do something off the top of my head, I dont keep track of my process. Bad, I know, but true. However, this one I actually remembered to track. Sort of. I have not tested the written pattern but plan on doing so shortly. If you do end up using this, please comment or email (delirium[at]nycap.rr.com) and let me know if you had/have problems (with the pattern, Im not a doctor) or if it worked out well. I havent decided if I like making patterns or if I think Im a good enough knitter to do so, but I figured coming up with a free one as a test run, cant be a wholly bad thing. Well, it could, but its a learning experience and you cant learn if you dont try (or some other thoughtful saying). So without further ado, my first pattern is behind the cut. I used leftover yarn that I had and it didnt use a full skein. Im not exactly sure how much it does use nor am I sure how much was in the skein to begin with as I cannot find the yarn wrapper thing (technical term). If I ever figure it out, Ill post it here. This is the first pattern Ive ever made, so please bear with me. Edited to Add: This pattern comfortably fits a 21-22 head and it can get bigger. I havent tested it on a smaller head but with the stretch going for the 21-22 head, I imagine it will fit down to a 19 head without problem. But I will test it when I find a smaller head. 11 Ribbed Hat Pattern Materials: [MC] Caron Simply Soft Gray; 1 skein [CC] Caron Simply Soft Black; 1 skein 1 pair US 7 19 Circular Needles 1 set US 7 Double Point Needles Gauge: 20 st = 4 Pattern

[MC] CO 80 Stitches. Join making sure not to twist and place marker to designate the row.

[MC] [k1, p1] to end of row Continue in [k1,p1] until piece measures 3 inches If using contrast color for a stripe, join new color. [CC] [k1, p1] until stripe measures 1 inch. Switch back to [MC] and continue in pattern until full piece measures 6 inches. At beginning of row [k1, p1] 5 times. Place a stitch marker. Repeat 7 more times or until you reach the end of the row. For each section: [k1, p1] until last three stitches before the stitch marker. For the last three stitches [k2tog, p1]. Do this 8 times. (so what you are doing is [k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, k2tog, p1]) Repeat last step for each row. Working until the last three stitches before the marker, then [k2tog, p1] Continue until you have 8 stitches left. (Switch to the double pointed needles when you can no longer knit the hat on your circulars) K2tog through last row until you have 4 stitches. Finishing Cut yarn leaving a 6 tail. Thread yarn through a tapestry needle and pull yarn through last 4 stitches. Pull tight. Secure the yarn on the inside of the hat and weave in ends. 35 mm

Fresh from the Knitty rejection pile! (It's okay Knitty, I still love you. Let's hang out sometime?) 35mm Hat Growing up in Minnesota, I know the value of warm winter accessories. Unfortunately, I see so many people covering their heads with boring, machine-knit hats that I sometimes get the desire to make hats for people I hardly know. Since handing out new hats to my acquaintances might come across as strange, perhaps Ill settle on giving them to my friends and family. This hat was designed for my older brother, Colin. He has a strong interest in television and movies, so I thought a filmstrip image would suit his taste. Since the hat is double-knit, it not only provides two layers of warmth on cold, windy days, but it is reversible, too! SIZE to fit an average or large adult head

By knitting into the front and back of each stitch in the first knit row, the stitch count is doubled, which creates the inner layer of the hat. Both layers are knit simultaneously, with outer- and inner-layer stitches alternating around the needle. (Heres a wonderful video that explains double knitting (scroll down).) Then, for each decrease, four stitches must be regarranged so that two outer stitches are next to each other, followed by two inner stitches. Note: When double-knitting in stockinette stitch, you knit the outer-layer stitches and purl the inner layer stitches. However, both strands of yarn must travel together. That means, if youre knitting with the MC, the CC needs to be at the back of the work with the MC, even though youre not using the CC for that knit stitch. On the next stitch, when you purl with the CC, bring both strands to the front of the work, and purl with just the CC. (This is very important; it allows for the two layers to stay separate.) Methods: To create the filmstrip, you will use these four color sequences. Method 1 [solid MC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC) Method 2 [solid CC outer row]: (k1 CC, p1 MC) Method 3 [alternating MC/CC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC, k1 CC, p1 MC) Method 4 [6 sts MC/2 sts CC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC) 6x, (k1 CC, p1 MC) 2x

Dec 2 (decrease two): When rearranging stitches for decreases (which occur in pairs), it may be helpful to use a cable needle. Heres how you should work each dec 2: Sl 1 (MC) to right needle, sl 1 (CC) to cable needle, sl 1 st to right needle, return (CC) st on cable needle to left needle, return 2 (MC) sts on right needle to left needle. K2 tog MC, p2 tog CC. PATTERN Hat is worked from the bottom up. As you decrease for the crown, switch to dpns whenever you feel the circular needle becomes awkward to use. Using MC and circular needle, CO 88 sts. Place marker and attach CC. The rest of the pattern is worked in the round. Rnd 1: (K into front of st w/MC, k into back of st w/CC) around. 176 sts. Rnds 2-6: Rep Method 1 around. Rnd 7: Rep Method 2 around. Rnds 8-9: Rep Method 3 around. Rnd 10: Rep Method 2 around. Rnds 11-17: Rep Method 4 around. Rnd 18: Rep Method 2 around. Rnds 19-20: Rep Method 3 around. Rnd 21: Rep Method 1 around. Rnd 22: K1 CC, p1 MC, rep Method 1 around. Rnds 23-39: Rep Method 1 around. FINISHING Cut MC and CC, leaving 6 inch tails. Using a tapestry needle, thread CC through rem 4 CC sts, weave in end on inside layer of hat. Then, use tapestry needle to thread MC tail through rem 4 MC sts, weave in end on outside layer of hat. Weave in the ends at the cast-on edge and put it on your (or someone elses) head! Knit Adult Hat Pattern

--SIZE: 16" circumference at rest --YARN: [I used Paton's "Grace", 100% mercerized cotton, but any yarn which produces gauge would work] RED: about 130 yds sport-weight yarn which produces gauge BLACK: about 70 yds sport-weight yarn which produces gauge

--NEEDLES: Size 3 US double-point needles Size 3 US circular needle, 16" long (optional) Crochet hook or tapestry needle 10 stitch markers with 1 of a different color (or other obvious difference) --GAUGE: 7 sts x 9 1/2 rows per inch --DIRECTIONS: With Red, cast on 112 sts. Join in the round, and work 2 rows K1, P1 rib. Break Red. Attach Black, and continue rib for 46 more rows (5", for 3 1/2" fold-up). Cut Black. Attach Red, and knit every row (Stockinette Stitch in the round) for 44 rows. [10" total from cast-on] On next row, k2tog on sts 1-2 and sts 57-58. At the same time, place a marker after every 11 sts (counting the k2tog as 1 st). Maintain different color marker at beg of row. Work 1 row even. On next row, k2tog to left of each marker. Repeat every other row over total of 20 rows. Cut yarn, leaving an 8" tail. With crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull yarn through last 10 sts. Pull yarn end to inside of cap, and secure end. ---

APPLIQUE: This particular personalized applique is one which I created on fabric myself. Any purchased applique may be attached by sewing by hand or machine along the outside edges to the knit hat. I stretched the knit sts a bit as I sewed in order to prevent any binding up of the brim once it was put upon a head.

Alli-san Hat
I owe my friend Allison a favor for her doing the message at Worship Team instead of me. I was originally going to make her cookies, but I think knitting is much more fun. I did mess up on one row, but I was watching Black Butler! I think that's a good reason. Please tell me you didn't even notice it until I pointed it out and, in fact, it helped add visual interest to the hat. Anyway, this is what I came up with.

Anna of Green Cables

Get it? Anna of Green Cables? Anne of Green...okay, it's lame, I know. Because St. Patrick's Day is coming up and there's a green hat KALand all, a green cabled hat

made from one hank of Knitpicks Sierra. It fits my 23" head, but since it's cablicious it also fits Mary's head with the brim folded up and Anna, whose head is a bit larger than mine (She actually said it was snug, although I don't see her eyes popping out or anything. Instead, that same sort of amused expression she always gets in one of my hats...the look that says "Other moms go to work, or drive a soccer van, or drink a bottle of white wine in the afternoon....my mom has a knitting blog."). I was going to show you how well it fits me, but the day I took this picture I was wearing my Old Navy camo pants and a black hoodie, and when I put the hat on all that was missing was some ofthese.

You can add length to the hat easily by adding more ribbing at the bottom. I personally don't like anything folded up on my ears, hence all the beanie-style hats I like to make. Yarn: Knitpicks Sierra, 1 Hank. Needles: 1 16"circular & a set of dpns in size 7, or whatever size gives you gauge (I knit big, so knit a swatch! The needle size on the ballband said 9-11) Gauge: 3sts/inch in stockinette (To see this hat in a smaller size & gauge, check here.) Begin Please note: if you downloaded this pattern before 12/5/07, there was a missing purl stitch

after the p2tog in the 2nd round of the Third Cable. This has been fixed. CO 72 sts on the circular needle (switch to the dpns during the decreases) and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker to indicate beginning of round.
