TCA Android Programming

As our subject course requirement, we have to attend seminars. So our instructor organized a seminar in our school Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA) held at Continuing Education Center on 4th of July, 2011. The program started 9am with our institute dean Prof. Guillermo Rillons opening speech. Our instructor Prof. Geraldin dela Cruz went up front to give a little speech and to introduce the lecturer Prof. Rogel Quilala. Sir Quilala began with introducing the programming language Android. He told us how and when it originated. The syntaxes and properties and a lot more trivia were included. Since it was just us, BSIT 4th year students, most were active to ask. Though I admit, Im one of those photographers, who took pictures of everything and everyone. Half day of trivial pointers and it was interactive. Even our instructor were there, I dont know if their visiting us or theyre also listening. We had an hour for the lunch break after that. The afternoon lecture was more on programming demos. He taught us how to make a basic program which can have an input. Its nice that he even gave us emulator copy. At first I thought Android is simple but actually seeing how he had to do and install a lot of things, Id say its complicated. The program ended at 4pm. And actually, I think its my first seminar experience. Everyone took pictures with each other even Sir Quilala and Sir Geri took pictures with us. It was a great experience. And Id say I learned a lot. Lets eat, sleep, Android!

SM Baliwag Student Assembly on Information Technology Education

Held on August 25, 2011, our next seminar was located at SM Baliwag. We had packed up early because we have to travel 2 hours to get there. At SM, we had to wait for almost an hour standing outside the hall because attendees must register first before going in and theres a lot of people attending. When we finally got inside, it was almost 9:30 in the morning. Thank God the program started immediately. The opening remarks speaker was Ms. Erlinda S. CaselaAbaritos, who is the president of PSITE Region 3. A lot of speech was taken before snack time. But the main lectures were after the snack. They started with Cloud Computing, telling us that it is what web use most of the time. Google as an example has Google Docs, PDF reader, Presentation and Excel, etc From what I understand, its like using virtual software to view and make something and accessible anywhere. Next was Business and IT, which was I think about pricing the products and services produced by an IT in short, Cost and a lot more. After that was Quiz Bee, I took a break because I was feeling sleepy. I went to National Bookstore for maybe 30 minutes and came back. Quiz Bee actually hyped me and my classmates because we really think other answers were wrong, especially because they didnt gave some explanation or details. We didnt dare ask though because we didnt have participant. By the third topic, a lot of attendees didnt come back after the lunch break. Those who were inside, only few were listening then. I admit, even I didnt listen much; I took a lot of photos. Cybercrime which literally means hacking was the last topic. The lecturer presented a video then explained what happened in it. He asked some attendees and then gave some freebees.

The Search for Mr. SSITE was the most interesting part though. The passersby outside were curious because the people inside the hall was yelling and screaming loudly. Lot of screaming happened while other contests were held. We decided to leave before the closing because we didnt have much time left. We were only allowed to round the mall until 8pm.

UST Software Freedom Day

We arrived at the venue which is University of Santo Tomas (UST) around 7am in the morning on September 17, 2011. We were a little early then so we had time to wash up our face and pee. At 8am we started lining up for registration. We sat up at the left-front side of the stage. The program started around 9am and there was some opening speech with a video presentation saying Happy Software Freedom Day! Lectures about FOSS were spoken by the presenter. What it is, who and when was it discovered, whythey explained them all. I thought its kind of boring then. They also told us how theyre not expecting much attendee because last year has lesser. The next topic was Ubuntu Desktop Tour. The speaker showed how Ubuntu can be installed through flash drive. He showed how the user can also choose the Try Live to have an instant OS within the usb He introduced the desktop interface of UBUNTU Desktop but for us TCA students, we already have enough knowledge. When the topic was DSource Inc, I was actually hungry. The friends I asked to eat with me agreed so we went outside. We barely catch up the next topic which is Trends in FOSS. I didnt really understand much then. Mozilla and Open Source speaker was creative with his lecture because he attracted listeners with his Mozilla Firefox lace prices when hes asking questions. I didnt get any though. He discussed all about Mozilla and how he got his job at Mozilla. He jokingly said if anyone wants to apply there, just tell the interviewer his name and the applicant can maybe get the job. Ruby was introduced on the next topic. Ruby was introduced to us as another OOP like Java. Though seeing the codes, its a lot complicated than Java. And the speaker doesnt know how to talk clear. I didnt understand most of those he said.

On DriveByte, I think I went to the restroom then. It was something about food designed like sceneries. When I got back, there were asking the participants some questions. It was Contests time. Foss Legislation by Rep. Teddy Casio was a very interesting lecture. He had done the talking impressively. He talked about lot of things and everyone seems to be listening to him. He mentioned Dont be afraid of change. Though that statement would most likely imply for older generations, he said. He showed how many years did television and radio took before getting billions of users while Facebook and AngryBirds only took months. He also said that there will be a time teachers are no longer needed because most people would be likely to choose technology over the traditional method. He said he doesnt like that to happen, I even, dont like that to happen either but everything is definitely changing. I think when he finished talking, everybody felt theyre hungry. So when the Chair of Commission on ICT took over the stage, most attendees werent listening then fairly because its already 12pm. Even the Question and Answer portion didnt have much interaction then. The MCs instructed us to where the breakout sessions will be held. I didnt packed a lunch so I went to KFC (inside the campus) to buy food. My friends and I decided to just eat lunch at the bus. After that, we walked and took pictures all over UST. We didnt tracked the time, so when we decided where session to go, it was already before 2pm. We chose FOSS for Arts held at Beato Hall. When we were at the entrance, we heard everybodys laughing from the inside. Speakers are students or graduated students from UST. One introduced Blender; he also explained how to use it and the user must compute/calculate a lot of things to make the picture move. He showed at least two demos and I admired how he done them easily. He also did them fast. The other subjects were Google Maps and other 3D generators for FOSS. I didnt stayed longer then because there werent enough seats. My feet were cramping due to walking.

After that, we went back to the bus. As soon as we got there, it started raining so we didnt get to go to other sessions. When the rain stopped, they said the certificates were available then. So we went to the hall and bought the certificates. I didnt get why we have to buy our certificate when it was seminar about free. Then we spend almost 4 hours on Mall of Asia after the seminar.

TUP Career Planning Seminar Exploring Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Information and Communications Technology

The seminar was held at Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Manila last September 24, 2011. The program started exactly at 9am with Ms. Caroline Lozanos lecture about Using SWOT Analysis as a Career-Planning Tool. The topic was interactive for TCA students because of our basic knowledge in SWOT. She explained how and why SWOT is used for analyzing and improving ones self for assessing their career planning. We had 10 minute break after the lecture when it started raining. We were trapped outside due to rainfall so we were a little late for the next lecture. The next topic by Prof. Julius Sareno was Career Opportunities in ICT Industry was about careers/jobs which IT students can apply after graduation. I didnt understand much of it though because of my late-coming. There was also a 30 minute presentation about VMobile Technologies before lunch break. An Overview of FOSS or Free Open Source Software was Sir Jeffrey Yasays lecture. He asked us, attendees, to dance before presenting. They say TCA students were praised because of knowledge of FOSS. He introduced Tux (the penguin) and he explained why FOSS is more powerful than proprietary software. Prof. Randall Lozanos topic, Social Media Opportunities attracted my attention since I really like the idea of using social media as a source of income/money. I didnt know there were that much interesting websites to use. Last topic was Technopreneurship or Entrepreneurship using Technology by Prof. Aileen De Leon where we were asked to respond ang galling-galing and grabe every time the words were spoken. E-commerce sites, shop-sites and many others were included in the topic.

Closing came and all were asked to dance with coordinators and lecturers. Id say the seminar was awesome because we get to go and take pictures on the stage with the lecturers and coordinators who gave us additional knowledge.
