Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS)

A single system that unifies
Compute: Industry standard x86 Network: Unified fabric Virtualization: Control, scale, performance Storage Access: Wire once for SAN, NAS, iSCSI

Embedded management
Increase scalability without added complexity Dynamic resource provisioning Ability to integrate with broad partner ecosystem

Energy efficient
Fewer servers, switches, adapters, cables Lower power and cooling requirements Increase compute efficiency by removing I/O and memory bottlenecks

VMware Hypervisor Products

VMware Server
A program that gets installed on an OS such as Windows or Linux

VMware Player
Same as Server, but only runs vms cant create them

VMware Workstation
Similar to Server, but adds features like snapshots

VMware Fusion
Similar to Server but runs on MAC OS X

VMware ESX
Bare-metal hypervisor in a linux-like operating system

VMware ESXi
Bare-metal thin hypervisor. Designed for datacenter use

UC on VMware ESXi 4.0

In 8.0, only support for UC on VMware ESXi 4.0
Other VMware platforms will not be supported for production use ESXi can be used in stand-alone or managed in a vSphere environment

ESXi is available free for stand-alone use ESXi is more secure and is better for running real-time applications ESXi is future direction for VMwares enterprise data center hypervisor model VMWare must claim compatability

History of VMware Support for CUCM

Not supported in CUCM 4 7
May have worked Some with limited licenses or warnings

Supported in CUCM 8.0

Limited scope with initial release Customers must already have VMware infrastructure Customers must already have virtual infrastructure and SAN expertise

Hardware Description
UCS B-series half-width blades
2.53GHz Xeon E5540 Processor (Nehalem) 1066MHz RAM Menlo adapter card

SAN storage FC only, no support for NAS or ISCSI SAN must be on VMwares hardware compatibility list. Fiber Channel Drives, 10k or 15k rpm tier 1 storage
Cisco Confidential 2009 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. 16

Configuration Description
Some or all Cisco UC applications will require use of VMware Reservation capability to assign both processor cores and memory to Virtual Machines Mix of Cisco UC applications on blade is OK no other vms on the blade. Test and Support only Specific VM Configurations per Application (cores, memory and disk) Configuration of the virtual machine is not enforced in software only through documentation. No oversubscription of RAM or CPU! Underlying hardware is invisible to the virtual machine, is not managed by the virtual machine.

NIC Teaming
NIC Teaming is not supported in the vm, therefore it is not supported in our application. NIC Teaming is not necessary in the vm, redundancy is provided at the hardware layer (host).

Migration from Physical to VM

To migrate an existing server to a VM you upgrade your server to 8.0, then take a DRF backup. You then install 8.0 in a VM and do a DRF restore. Same process as migrating from one physical server to another physical server. CUCM cluster migration
Clusters where some of the servers are physical and some are virtual is supported Most customers expected to move into a virtualized cluster this way For example, start by migrating 1 SUB to a VM, validate performance and stability
