The Radford University campus was captivated by an explosion of Scottish heritage on Oct. 1 at the 16th annual Highlanders Festival. Aside from the music, food, and festivities, approximately 8,000 people endured the dreary weather to witness a unique event: the Raisback Memorial Scottish Games. The games are a series of six events in which 10 competitors tested their strength in traditional Scottish competitions. They took place in the middle of the whole festival on Moffett Lawn. The contestants of the games were made up of 10 men that were selected by event manager Don Bowman. Three of the competitors represented Radford. Two of the Radford representatives were seniors Curtis Hodge and Justin Smith. The six events that tested the athletes brute strength were the Scottish hammer, stone, caber, sheaf, weight for height, and weight for distance tosses. The Scottish hammer toss requires the thrower to heave a 22-pound hammer further than the other competitors. Before his toss, competitor Billy Schrader warned the crowd to be alert and let a few bystanders hold the hammer to see its weight. They were amazed, but Schrader proceeded to make the heavy object seem light as a feather by tossing it 51.8 feet. However, 63, 355-pound RU senior Justin Smith won the event with a toss of 78 feet. The stones toss is the Scottish version of shot put. The contestants must throw a 16-pound stone as far as they can from a box with a technique that resembles the shot put. The caber toss is known as the signature event for Scottish games.
