The Radford University Field Hockey team had a busy weekend with road games at Appalachian State and the University of North Carolina. The Highlanders started off their busy schedule on Sept. 30 with a 3-2 win over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. The two teams were meeting for the second time in just seven days with the Mountaineers earning the 2-3 win in the rst match. Senior forward Melissa Register got RU started with a goal 17 seconds after the eighth minute and was assisted by senior forward Madonna Wadolowski. With the assist, Wadolowski marched into the record books. The 23rd assist broke the 25-year-old record previously held by Sue Neal (19831986). RU held the lead for 20 minutes before sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Encarnacion gave up a goal on a penalty stroke by App States Brooklyn Shearer. The score remained tied 1-1 as the teams headed into halftime. Register wasted no time in scoring her second goal of the night giving the Highs the lead that they would keep throughout the rest of the game. With the goal, Register is tied for the most goals on the team with ve and Wadolowski recorded another assist on the goal to give her 24 in her career. Just 12 shorts minute later, RU added a cushion to their lead that would prove to be useful later on in the match. Senior back Lynsey Daughtrey tallied this goal for the Highs off a rebound shot and was unassisted in the play. Both teams continued to play hard and Mountaineer Jessi Stuart tried to propel her team to a win with one last push when she connected for a goal in the 70th minute off of a penalty corner. But the goal proved to come too late and the Highs were able to hold on to get the win over their erce NorPac rival. Radford improved to 5-6 overall

Throwing a weight for distance is one of the many competitions the Highlander Games offered to spectators.

Local athletes and Radford students participate in an exhibition of traditional Scottish games

The Radford University campus was captivated by an explosion of Scottish heritage on Oct. 1 at the 16th annual Highlanders Festival. Aside from the music, food, and festivities, approximately 8,000 people endured the dreary weather to witness a unique event: the Raisback Memorial Scottish Games. The games are a series of six events in which 10 competitors tested their strength in traditional Scottish competitions. They took place in the middle of the whole festival on Moffett Lawn. The contestants of the games were made up of 10 men that were selected by event manager Don Bowman. Three of the competitors represented Radford. Two of the Radford representatives were seniors Curtis Hodge and Justin Smith. The six events that tested the athletes brute strength were the Scottish hammer, stone, caber, sheaf, weight for height, and weight for distance tosses. The Scottish hammer toss requires the thrower to heave a 22-pound hammer further than the other competitors. Before his toss, competitor Billy Schrader warned the crowd to be alert and let a few bystanders hold the hammer to see its weight. They were amazed, but Schrader proceeded to make the heavy object seem light as a feather by tossing it 51.8 feet. However, 63, 355-pound RU senior Justin Smith won the event with a toss of 78 feet. The stones toss is the Scottish version of shot put. The contestants must throw a 16-pound stone as far as they can from a box with a technique that resembles the shot put. The caber toss is known as the signature event for Scottish games.

Volleyball dominates early, falters later on

PETER MASON

Radford Volleyball dominated the Gardner-Webb University Runnin Bulldogs on Sept. 30 in three straight sets, then on Oct. 1, fell 3-1 to UNC Asheville. Gardner-Webb was never really able to keep up with the Highlanders, who outscored their opponent heavily (25-19, 25-16, 25-12). Sophomore outside hitter Emily Carlin led the team in kills with 11, Freshman outside hitter Rachel Wiechecki had seven, and freshman middle blocker Emma Deininger had six. In both games two and three against the Runnin Bulldogs, RU jumped out to commanding leads. Once falling into a 10-point deficit, Gardner-Webb was never fully able to recover and gave up the matches to fall 3-0. They currently hold a record of 4-13 (0-3). The Highs in game two jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the match, and in game three they managed to race ahead to a 9-2 advantage. Gardner-Webb, as a team, tallied a total of 22 kills for the team, and 25 errors. Sophomore middle blocker Tyler Cockrell led the Runnin Bulldogs in kills with seven. The victory for RU however was short lived, as they fell in a tough match against UNC Asheville the very next day by a score of 3-1 after they won the first game in a 26-24 nail biting set. The Highlanders, who currently hold a record of 6-10 (1-2), fell short to the Bulldogs after a hard fought first game (26-24, 16-25, 15-25, 18-25). Asheville started out in the first game with an 18-14 team before the Highlanders rallied to win it 26-24 to take a 1-0 lead in the series. In game four, RU fell again to a 7-2 deficit and Asheville was able to control the match to eventually take the series. The Highlanders were never quite able to find a way around the Bulldogs ability to control the ball. Their spike was a very effective weapon in their arsenal as well. Asheville however in the next two matches jumped out to lead by six points in the next two matches, and Radford wasnt able to keep up after that. Ashevilles sophomore
