BUSINESS CHALLENGES
Initially, two offices out of 20 in total were chosen for the trial one was the organizations headquarters in Manchester and one a separate site in the Midlands. Murray Metals also linked a group of senior employees who were embarking on a Management Development program into the trial, allowing them to access core learning management material that would help with the program on which group members were working. Currently Murray Metals has a range of knowledge documents on the LMS to assist with day-to-day office activities. These include courses run using materials developed with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint in addition to quizzes and other knowledgebased documents specifically related to health and safety issues. Looking to the future, Murray Metals is planning to use Learning Management to deliver instructive manuals as well as other knowledge-based documents to staff to accompany the planned launch of a new computer system across the organization. The idea is that relevant staff can access this material, as and when required, for training purposes, but also to promote consistent learning experiences by using the materials to help induct new staff. Ultimately, the company expects to use the system during the annual appraisal period to support relevant training course bookings. During the intervening time, Murray Metals will seek to bed this approach in with the appropriate control group.

in ensuring the majority of our employees begin to use the site regularly and proactively, continued Wardale. The companys health and safety department have already become intensive users. The team loves the opportunity it gives them to streamline their approach and consolidate key information for staff. In the past, training requirements have typically been carried out on a one-toone basis with individual employees and have needed to be fitted in around tight timescales. Using Learning Management allows the department to manage its own operational and training activities more efficiently around their own personal deadlines and calendar commitments. Murray Metals also believes that the system will support its likely future growth. It is envisaged that future Management Development programs, like those already running, will utilize Learning Management in a greater capacity. Learning Management has the potential to support the provision of this capability and in doing so, to help tomorrows managers to achieve their goals.
