For the post of Security Assistant Gr. II, the candidates must conform to the following minimum physical standards. Male: Height: 167.5 cms. There will be no negative marking in the preliminary examination. Soap Making Process


Soap making consists of the art of chemically combining the oils with the caustic alkalies. There is a definite relation between the two. The chemical change that takes place may be described in the equation forms : Oil=fatty ac id+glycerine Oil+caustic soda=sodium salt of the fatty acid (soap)+glycerine. The glycerine liberated by the oils is approximately 9 to 10 per cent. Pretreatment of Oils: Fats and oils in their crude conditions vary in their qualities, such as appearance, smell, colour, presence of impurities, etc. They therefore, need some treatment before saponification so that soaps of good, uniform quality are obtained. Kind of pretreatment and its extent depend upon the quality of the available raw oil and desired quality of the end products as also the economic of the treatment. These are matters of judgement on the part of the soap maker. Dcgumming. Suspended and colloidal impurities are normally removed by a hot brine or steam treatment. The gums may float on the top or may precipitate. Their separation is facilitated by use of a centrifuge. Alkali Treatment. Oils which contain excess of free fatty acids are given alkali treatment. Aqueous sodium hydroxide, equivalent to the free fatty acid content of the oil is added with slow stirring to the hot oil. Crude soap is precipitated and it absorbs some of the unwanted colour bodies. It is allowed to settle for sometimes after which the neutral oil is filtered off. Bleaching: This treatment is given to decolourize the oils. Materials like activated Fuller's earth or activated carbon have the property of removing colour from liquids by absorption. A measured quantity of the earth or the carbon or both is mixed with the oil, agitated for sometime and the mixture is filtered when a pale oil is obtained. The quantities of the absorbent (0.5-0.2%), temperature of bleaching (60-90C), time of contact (20-40 min.), type of agitation, etc., have to be fixed by trials. Bleaching is more effective under vacuum. Hydrogenation: Some highly unsaturated oils like fish oil and linseed oil are hydrogenated to a semihard or hard condition and used as a hard stock. In many cases, partial hydrogenation improves the stability, colour and odour of the oil. There are four popular processes of making soaps but for cottage scale soap manufacture, cold process is most generally adopted. In this process the oils or fats are directly mixed with the required quantity ot caustic soda "lye" (i.e., caustic soda dissolved in water) at ordinary temperature. No heat except for melting solid oils or fats is required to bring about the combination of the fatty stock i.e., oils with the caustic lye. As a matter of fact advantage is taken of the natural heat generated during the combination of the oil and the lye. The fatty stock or oils as well as the caustic soda are required to be of the greatest purity for getting a homogenous and uniform product ; moreover the oils should not be abnormally rancid or contain too much fatty acids and should be free from adulteration of any kind. Since different oils require different percentages of caustic soda, and in the cold process soaps calculated amounts of oils and lye are mixed together. It will vitiate the results if the oils are adulterated. The process is so simple that no elaborate plant is required. All that is wanted is a small tank for dissolving the caustic soda, a pan for mixing the oils and caustic soda solution and a frame or box for cooling the soap. A cutting machine may also prove advantageous for cutting soap cakes in uniform sizes.

incorporated into the soap, rosin is crushed into coarse powder. Pour part of the oil into the pan and heat. Mix the rosin into it little by little and heat till all the rosin is dissolved in the oil. Then pour the rest of the weighed oils into the pan. Mix thoroughly. Soap stone (talc) is now stirred into the oil. When the temperature of oil comes to about 80 90F., the correctly weighed quantity of soda caustic lye (having the same temperature as that of oil) is added in a thin stream, the whole mass being continuously stirred by a wooden stirrer or crutcher. The stirring is continued till all the lye is in and until the mixture thickens to such a degree that the stirrer leaves a mark in the mixture. It will take quarter to half an hour depending upon the fatty material used and the temperature. When the mixture of oil and caustic solution thickens, it should be ladled out into the frames where saponification proceed vigorously, the temperature of the mixture rising to about 1 SQF. The frame must be covered with blanket or gunny bags in order to encourage saponification. Saponification should be complete within 25 hours and in some cases in less than six hours. When the soap completely solidifies, it is removed from the frame in the form of a solid block and examined. If due care is taken, a firm and fairly good soap will be produced. If soap turns out streaky or uneven, it means it is not thoroughly mixed. If it gives sharp biting to the tongue, much soda has been used ; if soft, mild and greasy, too little soda was used (or presumably mixture separated during saponification due to oils being rancid or impure). In either case it must be cut into small pieces and thrown into a pan and brought to a boil with a little more water, and stirring with a crutcher. In case of the first defect (streaky or unevenness) boiling is all that is necessary ; in other two defects little more oil or a little more soda must be added. *When the soap is finished it is to be ladled into frames to set.

Mahua oil 15 Groundnut oil 20 Rice bran oil 10 Rosin 5 Caustic soda lye 38 Be' 25 The above formulas will give genuine soap of highest quality. For somewhat cheaper quality fillcl soaps the followiag formula may be used : Kgs Cotton seed oil 10 Groundnut oil 25 Mahua oil 10 Rosin 5 Caustic soda lye 38 Be' 25 Soap stone powder 2 to 5 Procedure: Before starting to make a batch of soap, caustic solution (lye) of required strength should be made and kept ready. Generally 1/2 kg. of caustic soda lye of 38-40 Be' are required for saponifying 1 kg. of fat or oil. A lye of 38- 40 Be' strength is obtained by dissolving 1 kg. of caustic soda (solid) in 3 kg. of water. Accurate weighing of fat and lye is a requisite for the success of the soap; if not enough lye is added the soap becomes soft and spongy, and if too much, hard and brittle, and even separates paste or lye. To make caustic lye, the required quantity of soda caustic is transferred to a small iron tank and necessary quantity of water is added. After a few minutes the solution becomes so-hot that the tank cannot be touched. It will be observed that some big lumps are sticking in the bottom of the tank which will take quite a long time to dissolve if the solution is not stirred frequently. . When the solution becomes cool, only then its strength should be tested by a hydrometer. Strength may be brought to required degree by addition of water or soda caustic, as the case may be. The decision of the Secretariat shall be final in deciding the eligibility of the candidate. (ii) After passing the final M.B.B.S. Examination, where M.B.B.S. course is of 41/2 years duration, a candidate must have successfully completed Housemanship for atleast one year. But if a candidate has passed the final M.B.B.S. Examination of five years course, where there is no obligatory rotating Housemanship prior to award of the M.B.B.S. degree, he/she must have completed successfully Housemanship for atleast six months on or before the last date prescribed for receipt of application for the above post. (iii) In case he/she has acquired M.B.B.S. degree from a foreign University, he/she is required to have passed the screening test conducted by the National Board of Examination as prescribed by the Medical Council of India vide Notification No.MCI- 203(9) Regn.2001, dated 13.02.2002.
