I am trying to configure our DPM 2010 environment and have been having a few issues understanding the application. I am used to using Backup Exec which I am used to and understand quite well, but as a business we have changed to DPM 2010 which is a different kettle of fish altogether it seems. server, and an LTO5 TL2000 autoloader connected to the primary DPM server only via a 6Gb SAS card and cable. My plan is to have both servers running backups daily to their respective storage pools and then the primary DPM server to back up all protected servers on both to tape once a week for offsite storage. This is seeming problematic as I am unable to create a protection group with only long term storage. I was hoping to backup the protected servers on both DPM servers weekly to tape only in a seperate protection group as there is little point in copying it all from DPM server 2 over to the DPM 1 server's storage pool as well, but I do not seem to be able to do this as the creation of the protection group seems to be dependent on short term storage being selected as well. I am unable to share the tape drive between the 2 servers and budget limitations prevent me from getting a tape drive for each DPM server. Does anyone have any advice / best practice guidance they could share with me on how to do this as I am beginning to go around in circles and not getting very far! Thanks Chris

Hi,

If you make the DPM1 server a secondary DPM server to DPM2, then you need to add more disk to DPM1. Once secondary protection is enabled, you can backup the secondary protected data sources You cannot directly perform Disk to tape backup of secondarily protected data from DPM2 from DPM1, you need to do d2d2t. Hi,

Sign In to means the tape library must either be Fiber SAN or iSCSI attached so both servers can see it in device Vote

You cannot share a locally attached tape library between DPM servers. DPM tape library sharing feature requires that the tape library be accessible by all DPM servers that you want to share it with. This manager.

How to Setup Tape Library Sharing http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399106.aspx Without a 2nd tape library, or one that is fiber or network connected, the only other option you have is to make the DPM1 server a secondary DPM server to DPM2 server. Yes, this would require more storage on the DPM1, and depending on the total datasources being protected by both DPM servers, that may not be possible either. Regards, Mike J. Thanks Mike,

Sign In to secondary DPM server. I can see them there, but have been getting errors when trying to run a backup. Vote

If I can't share the tape drive, should I be able to back the protected servers on the secondary DPM server to the primary DPM servers tape drive if I select them from the Protected Servers node under the Also, would I be able to back client servers up directly to each DPM server (so in effect both are Primary servers), and also use the main DPM server which has a tape drive attached as a secondary to the other tapeless DPM server, thus being able to protect it's disk backups and write them to tape that way? Regards Chris

Thanks Mike,

Sign In to drive, but if this fails we will have to look into our other options. Vote

I will try this and change ratio of disk space allocated as storage pools on the MD3200 from 50:50 to 25:75 and see if this works. It will hopefully mean I don't need to buy more storage or another tape Thanks for your help, Chris
