What is Staff Self- Service?

Employee Self Service (ESS) is a mixture of technology and organizational change that helps users to act together directly with their human resource data to make investigations, evaluate and act upon transactions in the workplace. This human resource technology is known as employee self-service, staff self -service, manager self-service, or employee direct-access systems. ESS guarantees a "paperless" office, efficient business processes, and the elimination of "administrative processes" for human resource staff because employees and managers conduct simple transactions via computers that were formerly completed on paper forms and then handled by HR staff. There are several types of self-service applications which include Interactive Voice Response, Internet and intranet. I will be focusing on web-based self-service via a company intranet or the Internet. ESS creates a single, secure source for confidential HR information and processes. It provides an easy-to-navigate environment for all employees in the workforce regardless of where they are located 24 hours a day and 7 days a week which allows those who are based at the top of the organisational structure to keep an eye on employees. Access rights for each employee are established by HR and are typically determined by the employee's position in the company organizational hierarchy, department, and key job functions.

Advantages
1) Lowers cost of operations as marginal-cost of a self-check out is lower (and therefore increases profitability). This means you dont have to pay workers and therefore result in a higher net profit as labour costs will be reduced from the expenses figure. 2) Increases personnel reliability (no worrying about staffing schedules) therefore less stress upon the managers of the business. Also the time that the managers use in creating these staffing schedules can be used elsewhere benefiting the business. 3) Using computer based methods has many advantages such as being quick and efficient unlike labour where many problems may arise such as human error. Another point to add may include absenteeism which is based on how many people appear to work taking into consideration sick pay and maternity leave.

Disadvantages

1) Computers need maintenance and therefore the computers depreciate over

time due to wear and tear and obsolescence. Depreciation basically means that the monetary value of the fixed asset goes down over time.

2) A computer unlike humans cannot keep an eye on theft therefore there may
be an increase of stolen goods resulting in cash flow problems as more money may be going out then in.

3) Technology like computers are expensive to purchase and also expensive to

maintain. Many problems can also arise as computers can get virus clearing out vital information stored.

This shows that the management is giving the employees the respect they deserve. As the staff find it appealing to donate money under the name of their family members, it makes the children very happy and proud, if they are the listed donors and get a certificate at the end. The event register contains employees from all of their five sites and the building which they are located in, the list shows which staff members are participating in which event, therefore working in groups rather than individuals, which stimulates team sprit resulting in a more motivated workforce. Cutting down on internal costs, such as not providing mail delivery to each individual as it would not be very cost effective and the money can be used elsewhere. The Forms have a clear and simple layout , therefore it is quick to fill in and only includes the necessary information that they require , as it is constructed in a simple layout the forms are easy to organize , benefiting the business in the long term, as time wont be spent looking for the necessary information.
