INTRODUCTION:
The launch of 108 Services in Gujarat on 29th August 2007 has heralded a new era of emergency medical care in the state. The service has revolutionized the response to the people in distress and ensured access and affordability for the benefit of people of Gujarat. GVK EMRI operates 108 services in 11 states including Gujarat. With ongoing addition of ambulances, there would shortly be 506 ambulances under 108 services in Gujarat to provide Emergency Response to the entire population of 6.05 crores, covering all the districts. Since launch 108 has attended more than 22 lakhs emergencies and saved more than 1 lakh lives in life threatening situation. 20,265 deliveries have been assisted by EMTs of 108 ambulances or at Scene. It currently responds to between 2000-2200 emergencies on daily basis.

GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute) is a pioneer in Emergency Management Services in India. As a not - for - profit professional organization operating in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, GVK EMRI is the only professional Emergency Service Provider in India today.

This is a free service delivered through state- of -art emergency call response centres and has over 2858 ambulances across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. With the expansion of fleet and services set to spread across more states, GVK EMRI will have more than 10000 ambulances covering over a billion populations by 2011.

LITERATURE REVIEW:
GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute) is the only professional Emergency Service Provider in India. GVK EMRI is a non-profit company and handles the medical, police and fire emergencies through the " 1-0-8 Emergency service" The free service is implemented through state- of -art emergency call response centers and has over 2600 ambulances across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, Chennai, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Assam Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh. In this context, the Gujarat government had allotted GVK a plot near Kathawada, Ahmadabad to establish a high-tech emergency and research management centre. This centre has become functional from July 1, 2010.

Please note that Indias first ambulance service had started in Andhra Pradesh and this was a joint venture of State Government of Andhra Pradesh and the EMRI.

108: SOME INTERESTING FACTS:

108 is a sacred number not only in Hinduism, but also in Jainism and Buddhism. Hindu deities have 108 names. The Mala which is used for repetition of a mantra contains 108 beads, this is called Namjapa. These are normally made up Tulsi wood (Ocimum tenuiflorum) or Rudraksh. In Buddhism, juzu are the rings with 108 beads and they are known as "Buddhist rosary". The Buddhist Rosaries are tools of meditation in Buddhism. The Tibetan Buddhism counts that there are 108 sins. The Japanese new year, which used be celebrated with the Chinese New year before 1873, is now celebrated in January 1, coinciding with the Gregorian New year Calendar.
