Key results - 4000+ parents
Less than one in ten (8%) parents thinks their 10-13 year old knows the most about the
Internet in their households. American (78%) and German (77%) parents are most likely
to believe they are the most knowledgeable, compared to 17% of Australian parents who
credit their kids with knowing the most. Dads (87%) are significantly more likely to
consider themselves Internet experts than Moms / Mums (58%).
Half (50%) of parents in the English speaking countries and 44% of parents overall have
logged into their kids social media profile. In the US, 61% have done so, compared to
only 9% in Japan. Overall, mothers (49%) are more likely to go into their kids social
media profiles than Fathers (40%)
Six in ten parents have accessed their kids PCs to see what they are up to online. US
(72%) and Canadian (67%) parents are most likely to have done so
Two-thirds of parents know their kids passwords. In the US, that rises to 78%. Mothers
(69%) are more likely to know the password than Fathers (61%)
A majority of 10-13 year old kids in every country except New Zealand and (significantly)
Japan have their own PC.In the UK, most 10-13 year olds have the PC in the privacy of their
own bedroom. Australia is the one country where it is more likely to be in the living room
50% of 10-13 year olds in the English speaking countries and 44% of 10-13 year olds
overall now use social media on their mobile phones. This varies from 56% of American
kids to 14% of Japanese kids
58% of 10-13 year olds have accessed a mainstream social network. Italy (67%), Spain
(64%), Canada (64%), the UK (62%) and US (62%) all have significant numbers of 10-13
year olds on social sites such as Facebook and Twitter. By comparison, only 9% of
Japanese pre-teens and early teens can be found on these sites.
The age at which 50%+ of kids have graduated onto mainstream sites is 10 in Italy and
Spain, 11 in the US, UK, Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand, 12 in Germany.
