The Hawkeyes added to a 12-10 halftime lead with 10 second-half points and weathered a late Boilermaker rally that saw the game end with Purdue threatening at the Iowa 27 yard-line when the clock expired. SHORT, GASTON BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Kawann Short and Bruce Gaston were recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their eorts in the Boilermakers 26-23 overtime victory over Ohio State. Short was named as the Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Gaston the Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for Nov. 14. It was the second POW honor of the season (Oct. 15) and the third of his career for Short and the rst ever for Gaston. Short, who was also named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week, helped a Purdue defense hold back the Buckeyes in the overtime victory. Short nished the game with a career-high three sacks for nine yards lost and six total stops on the day, including four solo tackles. Shorts eort led the way for a Boilermaker defense that posted season highs in both sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (10.0). Gaston came up with a blocked PAT to keep the 20-20 game tied and pave the way for the Boilermakers to defeat Ohio State in overtime. After the Buckeyes rallied to tie the game with 55 seconds left, Gaston penetrated through the Ohio State line and stued Drew Basils would-be go-ahead extra point to keep the game at a stalemate. Defensively, Gaston nished the game with a sack for a loss of ve yards and the blocked PAT. for both total kicko return yardage and average yardage per kicko return. The New Smyrna Beach, Fla., native ripped o 206 yards on ve returns to eclipse the previous 42-year old record of 184 yards on six returns by Stan Brown set at Ohio State on Nov. 15, 1969. His 41.2 return average also bettered Browns top Purdue mark of 39.5 set on four returns for 158 yards against Iowa on Oct. 18, 1969. He broke Browns total return yardage mark despite one less return and had a higher average than Browns previous mark despite one more return. The true freshman nished with returns of 74, 49, 40, 22 and 21 yards against the Badgers. Kicko Return Yards 1. Raheem Mostert at Wisconsin, 11/5/2011 206 2. Stan Brown at Ohio State, 11/15/1969 30.7 (6-184) NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE On Oct. 26, linebacker Joe Holland became just the third player in Purdue history to be awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the National Football Foundation (also Drew Bress in 2000 and Ken Loushin in 1979). Holland was named one of 16 players nationally as a NFF Scholar-Athlete. The Indianapolis native will be presented with an $18,000 scholarship at a national banquet in New York in early December. Holland has posted a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average at Purdue, was a second-team Academic All-American in 2010 and is a three-time Academic All-District V and Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He plans on going to dental school upon the completion of his football playing days. HANGING ONTO THE BALL The Ball Is The Program is a slogan that the Boilermakers have taken to heart. Through the rst 10 games of the season, Purdue has lost merely three fumbles (of which only two have been on oense). Perhaps the most impressive part of the ball protection is that Purdue has seen 17 dierent players rush with the ball this season and not a single runner has lost a fumble on 388 carries. Two of the three giveaways have come after receptions and the other on a punt return. MOVING ON UP Linebacker Joe Holland nished with seven tackles against Ohio State on Nov. 12 to push his career mark to 304 and into 18th all-time in Purdue history. Holland enters the Iowa game seven tackles away from Mark Brown for 17th (311) ... Kicker Carson Wiggs has also moved up the career charts at Purdue. The senior has amassed 262 total points in his career tying him six better than Mike Alstott s for fourth-place total of 256. Hell most likely nish third all-time, but we certainly like Purdues chances in the nal two games of the regular season if he approaches Kory Sheets No. 2 spot with 324 points. Wiggs 49 eld goals are second all-time to Travis Dorschs 68 and his 72.1 percent success rate is the top mark for any Purdue kicker ... Defensive tackle Kawann Short has also busted his way onto the all-time lists at Purdue. With 12.5 sacks, the East Chicago, Ind., native is tied with Jerrol Williams for 15th at Purdue and his 32.0 tackles for loss are also 15th for the Boilermakers. STREAKING Including ve catches for 47 yards last weekend against Ohio State, junior wide receiver Antavian Edison has a team-high 18-game reception streak dating back to the Oct. 9 Northwestern game last season. During the streak, Edison has caught 59 passes for 715 yards and six touchdowns. He is averaging 12.1 yards per catch during the streak.

The Ray Guy Award nominee has booted 12 of his 40 punts over 50 yards, including a season-long 66-yarder against Minnesota on Oct. 8 ... Teaming up with Carson Wiggs, Webster and Purdues punting unit ranks 20th nationally and is second in the Big Ten in net punting (38.9) ... 24 of Purdues 57 total punts of the season have been ended up inside the oppositions 20-yard line (to be more exact at the 1-, 1-, 5-, 7-, 8-, 8-, 8-, 8-, 10-, 11-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 13-, 13-, 13-, 13-, 14-, 15-, 16-, 18-, 19- and 19-yard lines) and the Boiler punters have had only one touchback all year. TWO BILLS Including Purdues 217 yards on the ground against Minnesota on Oct. 8, the Boilermakers are 9-1 during head coach Danny Hopes tenure in which they rush for 200 or more yards. 200-Yard Rushing Games Under Danny Hope Sept. 5, 2009, vs. Toledo, W 52-31 39-315, 4 TDs Oct. 24, 2009, vs. Illinois, W 24-14 39-220, 3 TDs Sept. 11, 2010, vs. Western Illinois, W 31-21 35-227, 3 TDs Sept. 18, 2010, vs. Ball State, W 24-13 46-203 Sept. 25, 2010, vs. Toledo, L 31-20 43-220, 1 TD Oct. 9, 2010, at Northwestern, W 20-17 42-232, 2 TDs Oct. 16, 2010, vs. Minnesota, W 28-17 46-230, 3 TDs Sept. 3, 2011, vs. Middle Tennessee, W 27-24 46-200, 1 TD Sept. 17, 2011, vs. Southeast Missouri, W 59-0 53-393, 7 TDs Oct. 8, 2011, vs. Minnesota, W 45-17 47-217, 3 TDs IRON MEN Linebacker Joe Holland, defensive end Gerald Gooden, defensive tackle Kawann Short and oensive tackle Dennis Kelly have all started 33 or more games during their Purdue careers. Holland leads the way, having started 45 of a possible 46 career games. Gooden (35) has more starts than either Short or Kelly (34), but the tackles on both side of the ball have strung them together consecutively. ODDS AND ENDS Purdues kicko return unit enters the Iowa game ranked second nationally and rst in the Big Ten with a 27.4 return average ... Raheem Mostert is a huge part of the previous note as he is currently fourth nationally and rst in the Big Ten with a 31.2 KOR average ... Caleb TerBushs consecutive starts to open the 2011 season marks the rst time since Joey Elliott started all 12 games in 2009 that a Boilermaker signal caller has been under center for 10 straight starts ... The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) became an ocial member of the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2011, increasing the Big Tens membership to 12 institutions for the rst time in conference history. The addition of Nebraska marked the Big Tens rst expansion since Penn State University joined the conference in June of 1990. On June 11, 2010, the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors announced unanimous approval of the University of Nebraskas application to join the conference, with competition to begin in all sports for the 2011-12 academic year. UNL has already been granted admission into the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago. The addition of the Cornhuskers allowed the conference to split football into two divisions, known as the Legends and Leaders, and hold a league championship game for the rst time ever. As a member of the Leaders Division, the Boilermakers will face the other ve division teams, crossover rival Iowa and Legends Division foes Michigan and Minnesota in 2011. The inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Dec. 3, and that facility will also host the title game in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
